The original had a hilarious anti-piracy system. When we tried playing at a LAN party using the same license key it appeared to work but a few minutes into the game all of our units would die and our buildings would blow up. Good times.

Actually with the game rights to this game expired years and years ago and with it being a completely commercially free remaster, there's an excellent chance they won't get taken down. Because who exactly are they stealing from? EA lost the license eons ago.

I loved both BFMEs. They were so good. Honestly enjoyed them far more than Dawn of War. Units didn’t feel “bullet spongy”. And man, Lord of the Rings as an RTS is awesome. The War of the Ring campaign was sickkkk. Was like playing RISK. Frankly, I’d buy this game (official release, not necessarily ‘Reforged’) in a heartbeat. Tolkien Estate/EA/Amazon, whoever owns these rights…pls lol

while waiting for Reforged, I'd highly recommend either Edain or Age of the Ring for the second game (both mods). They overhaul the game in a very nice way and honestly Age of the Ring comes pretty close to this regarding graphics

man the best part of the game was the cavalry. just charge into hordes of orcs mowing them all down and so on. that was revolutionary at the time and i still think that rts games are sleeping on that feature because thats how cavalry was used in battle. charge in, charge out.

@@gorrarz5760 Yep, it felt much more responsive than any other Cavalry vs. Infantry situations in other RTSs I’ve played. Like the other commenter said, Total War has it, but it doesn’t feel as “natural”. If I recall correctly, in BFME, you didn’t even necessarily have to attack (right click) an enemy to be able to knock them down. You could click past them and run through, knocking down enemies on the way.

Really hope we get to play this, looks absolutely amazing. Big tip: The Age of the Ring mod for BFME2, already a great partial overhaul of the game. Really great additions are already in it, they did a great job on that.

You can still play BFME I and II using GameRanger (just check which patch of the game other players are using). Reforged development is focused mainly on multiplayer, only later will the game include the Rise of the Witch King expansion, skirmish, campaign mode, etc...

I think it was the first one that I bought because the box showed screenshots with the camera angle near the ground looking across a battlefield and up at a castle with the sky visible. It looked so epic. I was disappointed and felt scammed when the ingame camera was locked above.

Loved this game. Whoever owns the rights to it should just hire the people working on it and let them release it. They would make money from it, so bit of a no brainer. Would hate to see all their hard work go to waste if they instantly got shut down.

Actually, no one owns rights to it right now. It's considered Abandonware which is why fan projects like this can go on without real worry for legal issue (as long as they don't charge for it).

Lord of the rings and both games have always been my favorite games, sadly they discontinued the online multiplayer aspect so using the online platforms designed to make it work, me and my friends tried to play and the game was laggy through the platform so we were disappointed and just sadly sad, we want to be able to play this game again.

I played BFME I and II. I enjoyed I much much more than BFME II. Second game had more races yes, but I liked the building style in BFME I, because you had limited spots to place your buildings and that was kinda unique. But still my TOP 3 RTS games are Dawn of War Soulstorm, Age of Empires 2/3, Stronghold 2.

i did very much enjoy the build mechanic as well. I feel like it made certain spots on the map much more vital. Also a big Stronghold 2 fan, would also love a remastered edition of that.

@@JD96893 True, I agree with that one. Also I liked that in the first game we had Rohan and Gondor as 2 different playable races. Even if they were both "human" factions, the playstyle and units(most of them) were different. For example, I played almost all skirmishes for Gondor just because their infantry looks cool, but sometimes I picked Rohan to play with the big amount of heroes + my tactics in campaign was full Rohan cav rush. As for Stronghold 2. Well, I started from Stronghold Crusader and it was good, but then I got a CD disc of Stronghold 2 and the difference between these games was huge. Two main things were better graphics and a very big choice of buildings. I play Stronghold 2 nowadays just because I love building big medieval cities and armies. And when you have the big city done, you should take control of many things like criminals, rats and other things. Also I like that there's a good campaign. So in my opinion Stronghold 2 is one of the best games(if not the best) of Stronghold series.

@@JD96893 I tried Stronghold 3, all I remember the new thing with building houses - closer houses to lords castle give more pop and costs more wood. That's all, I played like 1 day. The same thing with Stronghold Warlords. All you see is the same Stronghold 3 but with Asian style + if I'm not wrong your army FINALLY won't move through each other unit (so that's more like AOE thing). I think it would be great, if Stronghold 2 gets a remaster or something + some new features (like diplomacy, where you can ask for help or attack an enemy, negotiate, trade. Some of these features were in AOE 2 and Stronghold Crusader).

The games are currently freeware/ abandonware. No one owns the rights to distribute them, which means you can download them for free, also, it is not considered pirating. They're available on forums with fixes to run them without a disc, just a quick Google search away.

Its an abondonaware, thing to consider while talking if it can be shut down or not. I think they are pretty safe considering EA dosn't have lotr license anymore + original copies of the game are not selled anymore. (still a very huge Online Community exists with new patches and mods)

What I didnt like much about BFME 2 & 1 was that melee infantry was absolete, and fighting with them was weird to say the least. You either went for mass archers who dominated the field, or cavalry for their insane trample. Other than that, the attack animations for the melee units were very few. One if recall corectly. It didnt look good seeing units repeating the same over the top attack animation again and again. Other than that the customizable hero was cool. The cavalry trample was a nice and well executed mechanic. Sound effects, awesome and overall setting based on Peter Jackson's verson of LOTR. I would definetally play a remaster. But I would much prefer to see a brand new rts game.

i played both of the battle for middle earth games as well as age of empires/mythology and civ 3 and many more. Most of my child hood games i can still get and play on steam or play with an emulator(all of the previously mentioned). I'm baffled as to why this game isn't on steam! I would insta buy. The only way to play this is to pirate it or find an original copy which is very difficult! I tried several times.

Amazon doesn't have the full rights to this IP. If anyone sends a C&D it'll likely be either the Tolkien Estate, which I doubt will take offense, or EA, which would only do so because they're mean, since they have no business reason to end it unless they rerelease the game, and they may not hold the rights to do so anymore.
