I take comfort from knowing that Haldir was not killed in the book. That was only for the movies. Haldir lived on in the books, probably took part in the battle(s) against the Orcs that took place at the same time as the Gondorians/Rohirrim were fighting in the south. Thranduil and his people, as well as the dwarves of Erebor were also fighting their own battles. (in case some people wonder why Elves and Dwarfs weren't helping the humans) Different fronts in the war.

Sometimes I pity the head elves’ assistants. Like poor Feren, stuck with dealing with Thranduil and Legolas’s moods. Lindir and Haldir got it lucky tho. At least Lindir has Elrond. But then he had, at some point, to take care of the demon twins and deal with any other races that come knocking on Imladris’ doors. And Haldir and Galadriel don’t have to deal with some of this things.
