I think theoden had one of the most complete story arks in the lotr, he completely changed processing the death of this son, dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts to then over coming fear of death for a greater cause. True OG

In the books, when the rohirim arrives at the pelennor fields upon the battle of Minas Tirith, it was said that when King Theoden saw the army of Mordor and its numbers, he looked like an old man again, about to flee back to the mountains and hide. Then the wind hits him and he proceeds to blow a horn so hard that it splits into two, before charging into battle and his death. Even though king Theoden is fictional, he is a man everyone should aspire to become one day.

Another excellent part there: when they charged into the battle (Then the Winged Hussars arrived!) (oh wait, wrong war), they weren't screaming "Death!" like they were in the movie. They were singing. "And so fair was their singing that it carried even into the City." But after Theoden died at the hands of the Witch-king, no more the Rohirrim sang, but cried out in one fell voice, "Death!"

I guess it connects to the movies somewhat, idk if the producers did this on purpose, but when he was about to flee, he was basically saying, "what can men do against such reckless hate?" but then when he charged he was basically doing what aragorn said, "ride out and meet them!"

@@stardestroyerism Personally i preffer the death speach because it perfectly underlines that this charge literally was a suicide charge for Rohan. The army was like 70% of Rohans male population. After this Rohan would never be the same. Theoden led his country into a suicide charge with close to zero odds of victory despite knowing full well his country will most likely not survive this and he will not fight for his own but for everybody else that would be spared. It was to be the last charge of Rohan. One glorious last time.

A big theme in LOTR is to meet challenges, and overcome them. Boromir, Theoden and Denethor all faced challenges, but only Theoden overcame his challenges - to go to war against Saruman, to aid Gondor and in the end to make the final charge. He was indeed worthy to meet his ancestors without shame. Frankly I think that Theoden in the movies are a bit to young and fresh. He was past his prime, and would in the best of times spend his final years teaching his son the art of kingship, make good marriages to Eomer and Eowyn (the children of his sister, and of royal rank) and in general prepare Rohan for the next king. Instead he has to bury his son and go to war - a war he knows can't be won (at least by conventional weapons - discounting some hobbits and a Ring). Respect!

Most kings did fight their own battles up until the 17th century (as in active battle role), sometimes a bit later, and even afterwards they retained a battlefield presence for command purposes (a dedicated, rear command had become a necessity due to the nature of war changing). Modern times have seen that more rarely indeed. Medieval times and a bit closer: Henri IV of France, Leon and Aragon | Sebastian I of Portugal | John of Bohemia | Edward the Third | Henry V (I mean, who doesn't know that one) | David II of Scotland | George II (around the 1700's, so a bit later) | Richard III | Albert I king of the Belgians (and not of Belgium, as per their constitution) in 1914 | Louis XIII of France | Napoleon (he had been an artillary commander rising trough the ranks, and as emperor still commanded from the rear). There are many more, but I selected a few from all over Europe that might ring a bell (mainly from England, because I'm more familiar with them, but I tried to include others). The thing to understand about kings fighting battles is this: If the king dies during battle, you most likely just lost the entire war, put your country in jeopardy on the political scale, and shortened the potential lifespan of your house if you lacked heirs. The reason why the more we go back, the more kings took risks, is because the more we go back, the more king meant "local warlord dude with 50 men that asserts power over three villages". As time went by, and territories grew, so did the nature of war and politics. They had to shake the habit of putting their leaders at risk, and change mentalities concerning noble character and war. It always was a balance between political caution and political fame/glory.

As amazing as the depiction of the Ride of the Rohirrim is in the movies, it's somehow even more epic in the book. Theoden isn't simply out in front of his men, he's charging headlong into the enemy at such great speed that the rest the army can't catch up no matter how hard they try. The battle-fury of his fathers burns like fire in his veins. Dawn breaks behind him, his golden shield shines like the sun and the grass flames into green beneath the feet of his steed- his appearance is so majestic and fierce that he looks like a god of old. The Riders of Rohan see him and they aren't simply encouraged or psyched-up, they go so completely berserk that they start SINGING even as they smash and hack through the armies of Mordor like a tidal wave hitting shore.

I disagree. Aomir is the most impressive pure human warrior in lotr. All that he did and yet he never lost hope or stopped fighting even when his country burned and friends and family betrayed him and chaos all around his nation he loved. His neighbors and allies ignore cries to aid. His king is bewitched and kicks him out as a traitor. Did he go rogue or hide or leave Rohan ? No Aomir kept fighting the good fight and led by example and mustered the rohimmir all over Rohan and ready when his king came to his senses and called for aid. He is the best. But theoden is close indeed along with fairamir whom I personally enjoy and relate to at times. But Aomir is the best lotr human warrior leader by far.

I like how Theoden & Denethor's stories kind of mirror each other's. Both are rulers who lost a child. However, while Theoden dealt with his grief in a relatively healthy way, didn't let it defeat him (in fact, you could argue it strengthened his resolve), and maintained his honor and dignity, Denethor was crippled by his grief, lost all of his honor and dignity, and became a mere shadow of his former self. Even their names are almost mirrors of each other. Just reverse the syllables: Theoden - Denothe Denethor - Thoreden

Denethor was also way more competent in the books than he was in the movies. In the movies he sent Faramir out to his death, whereas in the books what happened was Faramir had come back from Osgiliath before it had fallen, and Denethor sent him back out to continue defending it. In the movies, Denethor was a madman, in the books he was conducting a defence in depth strategy that was about the best he could do with the forces he had, and it was only after Faramir was apparently dead that Denethor really lost it.

I also find it interesting how Tolkien managed to link the despair the Third Age back to the First. In that final charge upon Pelennor, Theoden is compared to the Valar Orome in his fury and wrath, and the only other character I can think of to be compared to Orome was High King Fingolfin in the First Age who similarly rides out for one last charge after the breaking of the siege of Angband. Theoden, Denethor, and Fingolfin all came to point where they believed that there is no hope for their people, but both Theoden and Fingolfin decided that they would meet their foes upon the field rather than wait for their doom.

It was the moment of completion for his character arc whereby he had achieved a feat worthy of song like his forebears, he overcame the enemy cavalry and plunged his spear into the serpent kings chest and captured their banner, routing them from the field.

The thing about tlotr is that you get fully fleshed out characters within only 3 movies. Theoden only gets 2 movies to build up his character and even still you feel it all. You feel his growth, his sadness and anger. You see him get out of this shell of a man and become a great king. It all ends with him staring down evil and giving his life for the greater good of his people. Truly an amazing character, my favorite one from the series.

Theoden blamed himself for his son’s death and he never forgave himself for it. From “The young perish and the old linger” to “I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed.”, Theoden was in some ways, the most heroic character of the movies. He was the most human, that’s for sure.

In Theoden's mind, he strongly believed that the race of man was doomed, that they would fail. When he arrives at Minas Tirith you can see despair cross his face momentarily when he sees wave upon wave of enemies. Despite all of this, he led from the front and fought with courage. A true leader.

Me too. And watched the extended dvds multiple times. I had a last project. Read the books, watch the behind the scenes and then watch the movie. But I stuck with the third book many years ago, many others things comes in my life in the mean time. So it still on the list. Maybe with Blu-Ray.

@@dukes2874 theoden is great sure yah as human. Boromir represents some but not all of humanity. To be human is to have free will to choose. Not everyone makes poor choices like Boromir. But they do die with honor. Fair amir and Sam are proof that even in the mist of war... live and death.. you can do your part and not get caught up in the evil going on all around on both sides even at times. They served and saved middle earth too. That is human as it gets too. You can learn from others mistakes. You don't have to make them yourself to know it's not the best choice.

@@dukes2874 being human doesn't mean we have flaws. Being human means we have a mind and body and spirit. Being human means we have free will and not always given into animal nature like the rest of nature on earth. Being human doesn't mean we are flawed and made mistakes. Sure overcoming your flaws is great but in the end, it was a poor choice of free will. You can choose not to be flawed. We all make mistakes in the end... but some way more than others. Like grema worm tongue compared to someone like fair amir. Both are human. Both lived entirely different lives and far more honorable. Worm tongue isn't more human because he chooses evil more often. You don't have to give into your desires especially selfish conceited vain unethical ones... it's called character. Something Tolkien speaks of much in his middle earth lore writing as he develope characters.

The Rohirim are the true heroes of the books. They are a small nation only recently recovered from a massive crisis, and they follow Aragorn and their King Theoden to fight the largest most terrifying army on the planet. Theoden and his people were rightly praised by Elessar in the epilogue.
