"In his heart, Frodo begins to understand: the quest will claim his life." Sam's devotion to Frodo was the wild card, something that not even the ring could corrupt. Galadriel saw into Sam's heart when they met, but she had also said that "foretelling was in vain". In other sense, though, it DID claim Frodo's life. It cost him his innocence and gave him wounds that would never heal. His only hope for peace was travelling to the West.
@mangoman21482 жыл бұрын
I still would have preferred Frodo dying in Mt Doom. His death was foretold several times and it would have completed the line of every ring-bearer who refused to relinquish the ring being killed as a result. For all the despair, no members of the Fellowship actually died in Two Towers or ROTK.
@michaelneufeld45152 жыл бұрын
The Quest did end up claiming Frodo's life, but not in the mundane way. His life as it was ceased to exist, and so he left for the Undying Lands. That's how these prophecies work - they're accurate but not always precise.

Reading reddit about this, the undying lands are basically a kind of heaven that lesser gods and angelic beings inhabit together with the elves. So in a sense he's kind of going to heaven to deal with his wounds. In a very real way...if you get on that boat you kind of are dying, since I don't think you can go back to Middle Earth; the undyling lands are supposed to be a higher dimension, where you're not on the same planet as middle earth anymore. But comparing a loss of innocence to death in and of itself seems a bit silly. There are lots of people suffering grave psychological problems on Earth today, and calling them dead would be a slap in the face. I think its an insulting interpretation and hard to take seriously. You can explain away virtually every wrong prophecy ever made by using the right metaphors. If you're willing to do that then prophecy loses all its meaning, you just interpret away the result until it suits your needs. But then you're aren't predicting anything, you're just a con artist.

"For Sauron will have dominion over all life on this earth, even to the ending of the world." That line always gives me chills. One of the most masterful parts of LOTR is the power-balancing of Sauron: he is the strongest thing outside of Valinor, yes, but at no point does he seem overpowered. This makes his threat all the more meaningful. He is older than the world and will last longer than the world; the image of a potentially successful Sauron brooding in his tower over a dead planet for endless millennia is a terrifying thought.

Masterpiece, absolutely without equal. The only example in adaptation, practical filmmaking, and visual storytelling. Dedicated actors compelling each other to bring everything everyday and believing in the material. I hope we'll see films like this again one day.

You can see the problem in Elronds eyes : the consequences of his actions ; he was there the day the strength of men failed, when Isildur kept that ring when he could have destroyed himself. He had the gift of foresight like Galadriel did and gave men another chance, not for his sake, but for his daughters and the man he raised like a son
@englishlady97973 жыл бұрын
He did, but one might say the choice that really saved Middle Earth in the end wasn't made with any influence from Elrond. It was when Faramir chose to let Frodo go. Overcoming the One Ring's seduction and defying his father. Faramir, who Galadriel sort of wrote off thinking he would inevitably fall.
@mikemal43983 жыл бұрын
Turning down the ring must have been hard for Faramir considering it's like the one thing that would make his dad "appreciate/respect" him. But that would only last like a minute anyway before denethor went even more crazy. Would be interesting to see what denethor would have tried to do with the ring and what powers it might have given him
@kenparsons76862 жыл бұрын
As strong of will as Faramir was, I doubt he would’ve ever presented the ring to Denethor. Isildur was essentially “corrupted” by the ring a few hours or days after he took it into his possession. I’m not sure it would be any different with Faramir. I think Faramir realized this and understood that taking the ring would quickly lead to his doom and that of his people. One of the more brilliant subplots in this incredible story.

Elrond didn't say anything in this scene and didn't have much expression either, but his brief expression, along with Galadriel's words are working so well together in showing how hopeless the situation is, and their combination also working so well in showing Elrond's grief and guilt for sending Frodo to this quest, which might also mean send him to death. Great acting by Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving.

Deleted version Elrond and Arwen was in Lothlorien. Galadriel was with Arwen at the mirrow showing future and Elrond spoke with Celeborn about war. So maybe they left line "word from Lord Elrond" but cut extra stuff out because of time. My oppion they should have change it word from Lorien or Galadriel/Celeborn or something like that.

Why would a Lorien elf lead Rivendell soldiers?
@kkmsscouttroop07892 жыл бұрын
@@goodputin4324 Well, in the books; no elves came to the battle of Helms Deep. While in the movie (The Two Towers), Haldir is leading the Lorien’s elves, whom are Teleri(s). Not the Noldor(s). If you watch the Fellowship of the Ring and The Hobbit Unexpected Journey, the Noldor(s) have different set of armours compare to their other elvish clan(s). At the same time, Imladris (Rivendell) is very far away from Helms Deep; even if they did it is impossible for them cross the Cap of Rohan without being notice by Saruman.

This scene demonstrates the power of the two Elvish rings of Galadriel and Elrond allowing telepathic communication. This scene was made because the whole story of The Lord of the Rings is not about orcs and elves and hobbits and wizards and Dark Lords and rings. It's about the lament and tragedy -- of the transition from the Third Age to the Fourth Age of Man. The lament of Tolkien for his Elves. To Tolkien, his race of Elves represented an apotheosis ... as everything consummately superior (grace, beauty, tallness, wisdom, passion, spirituality, knowledge, immortality, lithesomeness, strength, etc) to men. So the whole real story of LOTR is in this first scene, where the two most powerful Elves lament the coming War of the Rings, the destruction of the One Ring, the dissipation of their rings' powers, the fall of their kingdoms and the need for their peoples to leave Middle Earth forever, to the dominion of men. Men and their improvidence, wickedness, constant conflicts and wars, rapacity, and destruction of the ecosphere: industry, deforestation, pollution, etc.

The movies do a brilliant job of using characters like Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel to deliver exposition. They're the grand strategists in the war against Sauron, so they naturally have a chessboard-like view of events in the story. It also helps that Cate Blanchett could read the phonebook and make it sound epic.

LOTR greatest hero #1 - Samwise Gamgee; LOTR greatest hero #2 - Faramir…these two resisting the ring at pivotal moments is what allowed the quest to succeed despite what should have been doom. It’s one thing for hobbits to not get seduced by the ring…it’s quite another for a human to resist taking it.

The tragic thing is that none of the Elven warriors follow Helm's Deep will survive. Which in turn should mark the end of the time of the elves. This incidentally replaces the scene where Galadriel Celeborn meets Elrond and there decides to help the people of Rohan. A conversation ensued between Galadriel and her granddaughter Arwan. As beautiful as this scene is for her, I would have loved to have seen a scene with Arwen and her grandmother.

Galadriel badly underestimated men. That's all I can say. She just assumed Faramir would give in as she though men always would, but he didn't. He overcame the seduction of the One Ring (in the book he didn't even try to take it at all, he wasn't interested) and saved the world. King of shows Elves weren't always as wise and all-knowing as they thought.

They are weaker and she was right with Boromir and almost right with Faramir... it took him a lot of time and danger to realize that it was best to let Frodo go. At first he was going to take it... Elves fought Morgoth which was 10 times worst than Sauron. They could have simply left but they stayed and helped men.

@@korbin4510 I think Saruman would use his army to block off aid to Mordor from the north. This would give him time to search more for the ring. Of course Saruman doesn't realize that Frodo and Sam managed to separate from the fellowship and have already slipped passed his clutches. Saruman's main goal was to buy himself time by pretending to ally with Sauron while he searched for the ring and once he did he would challenge Sauron and try to control him or replace Sauron as a new dark lord/wizard.
