I keep getting the update error: 'An update error occurred: The request could not be sent'. How do I fix this?

I am trying to download the game but when the "Dat Files" are about to finish downloading, it says that the progress has failed and "HTTP 403 - Forbidden". WHat do you think the problem is and how exactly should I fix it?

if you have a lot of other games on your computer, would this stop them from working properly in any way or is the extra files just added files, not actually changing the way windows works.

Thank you for this video and posts on the forum. I would definitely need it if I did not play few other older games, so my clean Windows 10 install had all C++ etc things before installing any games. Sleep settings was the first thing I turned off after installing OS, it broke my tasks too many times. Akami, sound option and Update check was news to me, will do that! Now I have problems with my resolution in various installers and programs... Wonder what will happen with my LOTRO game? Installer is tiny and displaced as for now... My TV is 4k HDR 49' and I sit like 3 steps afar from it on a sofa... Still downloading files with Launcher...

just recently got a new laptop couple of weeks ago and I was having issues downloading the game! (I almost gave up it was driving me crazy.) I'm currently following your download process for the windows 10, but I noticed on the forum, that someone mentioned to download 'directx_Jun2010_redist.exe' Is that download necessary??

Thank you so much...I, as a complete noob, tried to fix the problem myself for hours today. I'm so glad I found your video. You really helped me :) Greetings from Austria ;) P.S. If anyone has a problem where, after logging in, the game freezes and shows "initlization"...follow the steps in the video it should work then.

You should do this via Steam which also streamlines a bunch of the tedious stuff and also gives you a faster client download and install.

This has not been my experience. The lack of DirectX runtimes isses persists and the .NET framework install is still required. And I'm not sure how Steam could be faster considering the Akamai download maxed out my 200Mbps cable connection. But thank you for the comment. As I mentioned at 7m30s into the video, all things being equal, I prefer not to use Steam for LotRO but consider it a fine service for other games where it's necessary/required.

It's cause Steam actually does a lot of this footwork for you - so maybe you should actually give it a try through Steam on Windows 10 and not outright dismiss a helpful suggestion? By the way, you can also disable the in game overlay for Steam in a particular game - which is actually really useful for MMOs and other games where that causes issues.

Decided to re-test Steam in exact same environment as the video above (fresh install of Windows 10 build 1703, patched, drivers installed). The steam installer is *much* more problematic. Especially if you don't pre-install the DirectX runtimes as advised in this video. 1. Steam downloads the game files no faster than the Akamai-powered standalone installer. Both saturate my 200Mbps cable connection. 2. The Steam-downloaded LotRO installer then SILENTLY FAILS just after prompting to install the .NET framework files. No amount of relaunching (from within Steam or via the blank LotRO icon placed on the desktop) will fix it. Only someone savvy enough to go in and find the executable files, launch them, and then note the error message might conclude correctly that this failure is due to a lack of Visual Studio Runtimes that fail to be installed by the Steam-based insaller (unlike the SSG stand-alone one). 3. The average player/customer would then be expected to know which visual C++ runtimes are necessary, (2005 SP1 x86 and x64, and 2010 x86 and x64), download them from Microsoft, and install them. 4. The client then successfully launches, patches to the most recent release of the game, and then SILENTLY CRASHES TO DESKTOP AGAIN at the point where the launcher should hand off to the game itself (after log-in and server-selection). The solution here being the installation of the directx runtimes (which is covered in the video above). However, please note that whereas the SSG stand-alone installer's directx runtime problems result in a game that doesn't have DX10/DX11 features, the Steam-based installation fails to run altogether. So, in conclusion, the Steam-based installer is neither faster, nor easier, nor less prone to problems. In fact, on a pristine computer, while the stand-alone installer might have confused the prospective player a bit, and might leave them with only DX9-based graphics, the steam-based installer would leave them unable to launch the game at all due to two severe problems with the Steam-based installer.

Hey, so I'm currently re downloading the game due to error 201 which I'm sure is due to a corrupt file. Whenever I reinstall lotro it happens and I always end up having to reinstall the game twice (though I don't know if in the past I found a work around and forgot what it was exactly) Do you know why this happens, if it's a problem with the launcher itself or if there's any way to prevent that from happening? Or do you have to keep your fingers crossed hoping that the game will actually download correctly?
