- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Hi Rob..Margie here. Hadn't watched for a while. This was an awesome pebble beach to walk along. And no other folks. That's a wow and cool. About your strippy rocks. Two of note. one at 16:47 on the video the pink with the quartz vein and another at 17:31. Those are actually in a couple "Pebble" ID books and called Wishing stones. The band of quartz has to go unbroken all the way around can be single or more. I like to call them Blessing stones. A lot will take a very nice polish as the matrix is jasper, or chert. The ones that are too big or mud or silt stone I spray with clear coat. (I know some frown on doing that) I like to have a bunch tumbled to give visiting kids. Have two tumblers going again..will send details in a bit. Shawn is at the Denver show..ode to Joy...new material coming.😊

Hey Margie! I know those are called wishing stones, but I just never call them that. I like your name better, actually. I don't have a problem with the name wishing stone, but I really dislike all the magical healing rock stuff. The other rock name that I don't like much is "hag stone" for a rock with a hole in it. I just call those holy rocks. Kind of like your blessing stones, I guess.

@@MichiganRocks I have a mixed group with the rock club and practice being gracious about the Metaphysical aspects. Since I'm good about the mineralogy with those it all works out. @@MichiganRocks The Video was really nice with the interaction between the two of you!! Of the comments I read, it was pretty favorable with you bringing Kyle along!! You guys should make another video if he does come back up this Fall!! We are on the 34 th day in the 90's this Summer and we average 13 days a Summer!! That's insane!!!! Plus how many days were we in the high 80's!! If high humidity wasn't a factor, it might not be so bad!!! Isn't it a drag with the sun going down so early now !?!?! It is only going to get worse when we got to change our clocks again!! Oh! I really don't buy from channels cuz I rarely wear a t-shirt and I have enough sweatshirts (with full zipper in front) from all my grandsons sports!! I wanted a bag, and I picked you!! I got the one with the state of Michigan in Black/Yellow letters & Michigan and the drawing could represent Michigan by pine needles, or toothpicks!!!!! 🤣🤣 I really like it, the bag does not look cheap either!!! I'll have to use it when I go up to my kids place in Hermantown!! Oh!! When grandkids get older they do not care to be around grandparents/parents. I get what you mean!! But, you have to come up with ideas of their interests!! How I got to see Henry (turned 19 in July), was him sending me his baseball sked of being an assistant coach (was the only coach there most of the time!) and I went to almost everyone of his games in town and other suburbs. I bring the boys when playing ball a cold Gatorade and a cold bottle of water each game!! I think they like that!! The other grandparents didn't come to one!!! So I was Special!!!!!! 🤣🤣 The one in town who just turned 14 Yrs old loves to bake/cook, therefore, we decide what we should make and I bring over all the ingredients and spend the night together!! The 9 and 11 year olds up north love painting, so I get everything for doing rocks, or play outside all day and I do that!!! Rob, you will do the exact same thing!!! Keep him very interested in rocks!!! Even if you get some girls!!! I just saw I had Bob on my other comment!! Sorry, I didn't do that on purpose!! I know you are Rob!!! Have a Happy Week!!!!! 🤗♥️👍

It has a fractured membrane with a patch of Limonite on one side, but not a single band. Very rare, I hope you kept that one. Also the Stramataporoid looks Agatized. @twostonefox

Yes- I believe it is ground water- either from an Artesian well or unconfined aquifer at the water table - possibly. I love your channel and watch it all the time. My wife and I rock hunt and will be in the UP next week and coming back down the Huron Shoreline over your way on the return trip back to GR. We'll stop a few places to check things out and hopefully find a pudding stone and/or gowganda tillite. Thanks for all your videos- can't wait till the next one! :) ~Thurston~@@MichiganRocks

Rob you should've banged of couple of rocks together for the beat for Kyle to sing
@MichiganRocks

I am 6'2" tall, which I generally enjoy. I have always said that the biggest downside is when my wife makes me dance at weddings. There's no way to hide in the middle of a crowd when you're tall, so everyone can see my head bouncing up and down at a different beat than everyone else. I have no sense of rhythm or beat or whatever it's called. So banging two rocks together would not have helped Kyle at all.

Thanks for all the video's you make on rock tumbling, very informational. I actually purchased my first rock tumbler recently (33B) because of it and started some batches. Now, even with seeing so many of your videos and all the tips, after rinsing the first batch i was suprised so many stones got super small and i swear some even dissapeared, even though i basically used just two types of stones: agate and quartz. With the second batch basically the same. I ran them 7 days each time, 80 grit silicon carbide, just over 2/3 full and water just below top rocks. Only thing i can think of is that the size difference was too big, is that possibly a problem? Hope you would know and keep making great video's!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Жыл бұрын
Agate and quartz (especially agate) are hard and never wear down as quickly as you're describing. Are you sure that's what you're tumbling? Having a variety of sizes in the tumbler is a good thing.

@@MichiganRocks thanks for your quick reply! That is what I thought as well which is why I thought starting out with these types. As far as I know they are but I guess I must be wrong in some cases. I am located in the Netherlands and we dont have great rocks here like lake superior or lake huron sadly. So its river gravel stones mostly together with bought rough agates. Ok, thanks for re-assuring and i'll just keep running more! Hoping to find a good vibratory tumbler here in europe. No Lot-o available unfortunately...

I spent time in the UP as a child. Are the biting flies a significant nuisance when you rock hunt? Between the flies and the mosquitos, we found camping there to be too troublesome.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Жыл бұрын
Yes, both the mosquitos and flies can be horrible. The mosquitos are bad in the woods but are rarely on the beach. The flies are on the beach, mostly. I have mesh pants in my backpack for when the flies get bad. They really help a lot. A Thermacell or bug spray works great for the mosquitos. There is no spray that works for flies as far as I know. I've had people recommend various things, but none have worked for me.

I haven't hunted rivers very much. The problem with a lot of rivers is that the rocks get all covered in algae so you can't tell what they are. I do not have any maintenance videos, but I should do that some day. I use 'three in one oil" to oil the ends of the shafts every week or two. As for changing parts, it depends on the parts. There's nothing too complicated. It's a pretty simple machine.

I wouldn't expect to find either rock in either of those locations. Petoskey stones are normally found south of a line from about Rogers City Michigan to Harbor Springs Michigan. Puddingstones are found farther to the east. I have found a few on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, but I don't think you'll find them in western Lake Superior or the very northern part of Lake Michigan. I haven't hunted in either of those areas, so I can't say what you'd find there.

We walked three miles that day. If we were raking, We might have gone no miles, depending on how deep we raked. It also would have been much less fun. So for me, going three miles and seeing all the rocks on top and enjoying the walk is a better choice than raking. I know a lot of people prefer to stay in a much smaller area and dig, so that's great too if that's what you enjoy.
