This might be my favorite video yet. I saw some beautiful scenery and also found the most highly concentrated area of Petoskey stones I have ever seen. Come explore this beautiful Lake Huron beach with me.
The Petoskey stone (Hexagonaria) is an approximately 360 million old fossilized coral. It is the state stone of Michigan. Petoskey stones are made of limestone which is very soft, approximately 3 on the Mohs scale. Since they are so soft, they can be polished by hand. Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

It looks like those circular formations at 6:30 are developing sinkholes. With the limestone bedrock so close to the surface, it would make sense that cave systems would develop during periods of lower water levels. As parts of the cave roof collapse, they would form the circular depressions we are seeing in the drone shot. It could also explain the 4-5 ft drop-off you were seeing in that area if there has been an overall sagging of the cave roof with some areas of deeper collapse forming those sinkholes.

Rob, I have been wanting a Petoskey stone since I first started watching your videos, but Michigan is somewhere I can't get to just yet. "Marquette Guy" here again. Your trip and how calm it is reminded me of a picture I took of me and my nieces standing on the ice of lake superior near the welcome center in Marquette. The water was freezing early that year I think june or july lol.... kidding of course... We walked out and you could see all the way to the bottom through the ice. After developing the pictures, (we had to wait a week back then to see what we captured) so all the younger viewers know what I mean by developing pictures... lol.... again... The pictures of us on the ice looked as though we were standing on the water itself. With our coats off and the way the sun and sky were clear and sunny and no snow at that point it was a really neat picture. Well, another "Marquette Guy" story and you have outdone yourself again in this video. Imagery is so clear and the colors are breathtaking.

I spent years going to Lake Michigan every vacation (relatives have a trailer near Ludington) and became a Lake Michigan snob. But this vacation we spent on the Lake Huron side after watching some of your videos. I was over joyed with the beauty we saw all along Lake Huron from Cheboygan to Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. I actually found lots of Petoskey stones along the shores of Lake Huron and I never found any in Petoskey! Thank you for opening my eyes to the beauty of Lake Huron. We plan to finish seeing the east side from Sturgeon Point Lighthouse all the way around the thumb to Detroit next trip. The scenery in this video is gorgeous.

I didn't realize until I started posting these videos that people somehow think that Lake Huron isn't as nice as Lake Michigan. I really think they're very similar. As you found out, we have some beautiful beaches here.

@@MichiganRocks I truly believe it is all about which side of the state you visited as a child. But, now that my son is at MTU I am really enjoying Lake Superior. I need to get over to Lake Erie and make my Michigan Great Lakes adventures complete.

@@taylorjudi I really like Lake Superior. That lake seems different than Michigan and Huron because it has different rocks. I've never hunted rocks on Erie or Ontario either.

Hi, am 73 and housebound so love your trips and especially this one. Great, and thank you. I would like to buy an 8" or so Petoskey stone to add to my little rock collection can you point me to someone who might sell me one? I'm in the Mio area of Michigan.
@MichiganRocks

I don't sell anything online. An 8 inch Petoskey stone is really big, so would probably cost a lot if it was a nice one. I don't have one that big myself. Here are some for sale on Etsy by a guy I know. They would be much smaller than 8 inches, though. www.etsy.com/shop/DrummondIslandRocks

My wife and I were inspired by your videos, and we just returned from a vacation to St. Ignace. We live in Ohio, and it’s been years since we ventured to beautiful Michigan. We gathered some rocks from Huron, Michigan, and up near White Fish Point on Superior. We found a couple Petosky stones, but Huron was pretty rough and it was hard to go too far out wading. But we had a blast. I watched your video on tumblers, and that’s our next project. Thanks for your videos!
