No, you are not the only person who feels remorse when you give away clothing items, even if they do not fit right now. It disturbs me when you get comments from viewers about what they think you should do, and how much better you would feel if you did it THEIR way. Honestly, I am more of a ADHD clutterer without the emotional attachment to MOST of my accumulated things. However, I have lost two family members in 3 months and I have emotional attachment to their items. I promised myself I will not give any of their possessions away now. I will reevaluate in a year. Please don’t be hard on yourself! You have accomplished so much in a year! I know you mean well subscribers, but respect Mira’s self-awareness. She knows what works for her. Send her support! Thanks Mira, for speaking about your feelings. You deserve respect and compassion. ❤️

Decluttering is a process and it is not linear. I finally realized I would rather have less things that I really love, than more things I just sorta like. It gets easier and easier. I have been working on it off and on for 5 years. Please give yourself some grace…it will happen! ❤

I think the dumpster will really help you feel "lighter" and less weighed down with stuff. May I suggest 2 routines to change that might help also? Number 1- Every time you finish a water bottle, get up and put it directly into the recycle/trash. Do not place it on a surface or the floor. Number 2- Keep a trash can in each room and when you handle trash ( i.e. wrapping from a box or package) put it directly into the trash can. If you made these changes, your environment would feel less overwhelming and you would have more energy to declutter and organize other things. Just my thoughts.

I just wanted to add on to this. The saying Don't put it Down, Put it Away, has been such a game changer in my home, for my ADHD. Of course, I then had to create "away" places to put things. I kept this systems as simple as possible. I still catch myself about to set something down and repeat the saying in my head as I get up to deal with it. Ongoing brain training. We are all works in progress.

Good for you ! We all have to establish habits and routines that make our life easier. For me, I have to see my keys in my hands before I close the house door, and hold my credit card purse in my hand til I put the card back into it after the transaction so I don't lose it!.

Two videos in a week's time? You spoil us! 🤗 Which means you had that much footage to share - more progress in your journey - so I'm doubly happy and proud of you! 400 items, wow! A winter/summer wardrobe change is what I do, and especially for those of us who live in areas with distinct seasons, I think that's normal. The winter clothes tend to be bulky; I don't have any expectation for myself to cram my entire wardrobe into 1 small closet. When I swap out for the season, I also take time to re-evaluate and let go of any items I didn't wind up wearing, so it's like a built in seasonal decluttering session, and useful in that way as well.

And as you say, with the leggings it's hard when you have an emotional attachment, and it's only first pass for the bedroom. Do you think that you would benefit from having help to organise the bedroom storage? Just a thought. I enjoy your videos so much Mira. I have 14 items of clothes left. I feel so light. I have no stress getting dressed anymore. No mess to clear. It was absolutely a process. I was convinced I needed more stuff. Spare stuff. I’ve realised I don’t. It’s fine to have little and I’m okay with that now….but goodness it was hard! Good luck to everyone on their journey.❤

Yay Mira!!! You were able to fold a lot of leggings! Great! One thought- one thing I avoid is doing things that cause me extra steps. I would avoid throwing anything into the floor. That just causes you a bend later on. I have a small card table in the living room that I use as needed- for meals or laptop. It also keeps things up off the floor. Don’t be discouraged please; just think of the amazing progress you have made, the new friendships you have, and the love and encouragement you are now given. You are blessed and we care! I see you too!

Well, my friend, reality has arrived. Your video illus😊trated what we all experience, dead ends. Now we can just stop, which you stated had happened in the past. Picture yourself driving without the aid of a phone for directions. If a sign ahead says, "Road construction ahead, do you park your car forever? My guess is you would find a way around the construction. Especially if you anticipated the need to visit a bathroom in your future! Today, you can choose another path, as you showed with the leggins. Regroup, dear Mira. You got this. Please don't stop. Don't let us down. But, more importantly, don't let yourself down. @thisnthat426 ай бұрын
Personally I would suggest using the closet as the limit to what clothes you keep, perhaps just storing some of the thicker winter jumpers during the summer if you have any. Think of your items as inventory and the more inventory that you have to manage the more work that entails. Finding places to put it away, remembering where you put it etc. It's all a lot of mental energy plus the weight it puts on you knowing that you have so much, it can feel like a mental burden. A wardrobe full of clothes is actually an abundant amount of clothing, especially taking into account that some items we wear more than once before washing. If you worry that you are going to run out of clothing before you wash them what may actually be happening is that you pick out something new each time while the laundry pile gets bigger and bigger and then it just looks overwhelming to deal with and so we ignore it. You're still using clothes at the same frequency but you are giving yourself a bigger job at the end of it. Having a smaller wardrobe may encourage you to do the laundry more often but it will be smaller, more manageable amounts. (and I'm only talking weekly or fortnightly, it's not actually *that* often.) Please don't get discouraged. You're doing good work but of course it can be draining at times. You're in the middle bit in your bedroom right now. The "it has to look worse before it gets better" stage. This is a normal stage and it can feel overwhelming but most importantly it can be conquered, just keep going and you will get there. Progress only stops when you do. You deserve to have a bedroom space that is a quiet sanctuary. As you said yourself you are trying something different. You have us all cheering you on so keep chipping away at it. ❤

I totally get your exhaustion at this whole declutting thing and how even after sorting out 400 items you are still not done. I also get this hopeless feeling every time I have gotten rid of more stuff and still... I open another closet and there is more. I look into another room and clean up and find more. How can there be more?? I don't want to do it anymore! Then I take a break and I tell myself that ultimately, decluttering should bring me joy. It should feel like I'm doing something good for myself, not like I'm punishing myself for having so much stuff. Just like shame doesn't lead to change, bad feelings are the same. If I'm not motivated to have space freed up for myself, maybe I don't need that space right now. Maybe for a while I can be happy with what I have already acchieved. It's harder for people with ADHD and perfectionists to look back and see what you have acchieved as a win, especially when there is still so much to do. "I didn't do all of it, so it was pointless." But in fact, you have already won, you have already proven to yourself and the world that you are not hopeless at decluttering, that you can do it pretty well and keep at it for a long time. You are already living a better version of yourself with a new great accomplishment! You already have great new habits after all these months! Sometimes after climbing a mountain you need to sit down for a bit and feel how nice it is to be up there instead of looking for the next bigger one. As for the cart: I always feel like furniture pieces where I have to think about what I would actually use it for are a burden on me. They are just one more thing to clean out regularly because I put stuff on. So my suggestion would be to think about stuff that you regularly use in your living room that have no real home. If everything you need in your living room already has a home and you are just putting extra stuff on the cart that doesn't belong in the living room anyway, I think the cart also doesn't belong there. It should hold a very specific set of items you know you need at the living room and that should be able to travel around the living room. Or if you really like the feeling of having it besides you and you want to fill it up - why not make it the water bottle cart? Load the layers with your full and empty water bottles and enjoy the freedom of having a place for your water bottles until they are all empty and go into the recycling, like the full cart. Or make it the tarot cart and put all the tarot decks in there, if you like to do a reading in different rooms, you can just take the cart with you to that room, select the deck of the day and put it back.

My thoughts for the leggings that you are not able to get rid of: Maybe smaller categories, meaning smaller boxes. Animal: dogs etc Seasonal - nature/months Seasonal - holiday Etc: geometric, animal print etc That way if you decide you want to get rid of something, you will know where it is and it is not such a big job. Maybe that will give you smaller boxes/more room in a corner of your closet. Love from Sugar Land, Tx (outside of Houston) where we don’t have predictable seasons….LOL

When they have taken them without telling me, it makes me even more angry, because when I go to look for them and I don't find them where I know I left them, they tell me I thought you weren't going to notice, that bothers me, because they are my things and I I decide whether to give them away or let them go. So I read somewhere that if you manage to get rid of overweight, it will take the brain up to seven years before it accepts the new, lower weight as "normal". With that in mind, I think it is very logical to think that it might take a good while for the brain to get used to less stuff. Even if, I at least, feel immediate relief with less clutter, give it a while, and the brain might forget that "too big" donations pile, and start to see more items to go as it grows used to seeing things like wall and floor space (especially if you get so far that you no longer need some of those storage furniture x) ). I like your big plastic cart, the one with five? tires. I think that could be a good sorting station for when you feel like dealing with a BoxofDoomTM. And use each shelf for a category. I agree that the small grey cart might be a dangerous "clutter magnet". Maybe save it too see if you feel like using it in the kitchen or scrap book room, but I agree with you that it probably should be going out from your living room.

Could you try just adding the clothes you wear to the closet as you wear them? Leave the others in a staging area if you have one- might show the clothes you gravitate to most and naturally fill your closet with those clothes you wear most often. Could you have a closet in another room that holds the clothes that you wear less often but aren’t ready to get rid of? You are doing great! When I think of your wardrobe, it might benefit from seasonal rotation. You have a lot of holiday/seasonal leggings. Then divy your tshirts amongst the leggins since they aren't as seasonal. Then after every season, you can see which leggings tou didn't use and it might be easier to let those ones go.

If those leggings are too sentimental for you get rid of them, but they no longer fit, I still think you could take the fabric and turn them into really novelty "granny panties" Just cut off the legs and then cut 2 equal strip. Add one strip to each side (the width that you need. And then just hem or zig zag the bottom of the legs. And you're done! You could also use the leftover fabric to make matching sports bras. Oooh, how cute! Just a thought. I like the fabric with the popcorn (and the red and white striped popcorn containers) on it.😅

I wanted to come leave a comment. Declutter is a journey (you know this)! In my 8 plus years doing this, what I think might work, might not, and it’s easy to get discouraged, but remember to pivot. Organizational system that I thought I would love, I hated! What I have found more often is that simple (for me) works best. Everything has a home. That’s hard to grasp and repeat, but once you do, it becomes a game changer. Rooting for you on your journey from the other side of the internet. You are different from when you started. You’ve got this!

I feel your frustration with the decluttering. There is no storage in our 1970s house and i have had to let go of SO MUCH, especially clothes. I have found that switching out my clothes seasonally and picking out only the clothes I absolutely love and putting them in my closet has really helped. I've slowly worked down over the last four years to a more "capsule" size wardrobe per season. Sometimes, not all my summer or winter clothes come out of the bin so at the end of the season when I put them away, I get to see them again. I often get rid of more items at this time too.

There might be some tips and tricks you haven't thought about that help you manage your space while still keeping what you love. I personally found it really helpful as someone who is also decluttering my closet. They bought some Ikea shelves for the closet that I think would solve a lot of my life issues! They did a seasonal rotation in a really smart and approachable way. I think April talked about how someone people just can't rotate seasonally and you have to know what kind of person you are.

@@shannonw6604Dani and Tracey are two very different styles of decluttering and it's so interesting to see. Dani is very ruthless and Tracy is taking her time. It really shows there's no right way to declutter.

@@GotAnUmbrella Very well stated. There is only the way that works for each of us. I guess it is our path to discover that, with or without the assistance of someone like April. Mine seems to be a spiral, coming back to rooms periodically and being able to let go of more and more. As each subsequent level of 'stuff' becomes my new norm, and my understanding of myself and why I am holding on to things grows, I find myself bringing much less in and needing much less to hold on to my sense of self. Therapy and managing my ADHD better also helps. I am not chasing dopamine through things as much.

Thank you for sharing your struggles and laughter with us. I will need you to name the back porch as you do the other piles. I had to go back and watch that section again to make sure I didn't miss your names for that pile. You are awesome and making progress!!

I started in January 2019 decluttering didn’t have nearly the amount of stuff that you are having to go through and I have felt this. I feel for ya, but you are doing great!! Strive for progress not perfection. Hang in there!

mira, good job for organizing even when decluttering is not a part of it 👏🏻 maybe you could use the cart in your scrapbook room instead and use some other smaller box in the living room, that way the clutter it catches has a smaller overflow limit and may help to keep clutter in check (note the “may” because what works for me might not work well for you) 🩷 hugs from southern california 🧸

Mira, thank you so much for sharing the ups & downs of your journey! ❤Wow! You let go of 400 items of clothing!! That is something to celebrate!! 🎉 You are doing awesome!! 😎 I’m so glad you got a free dumpster to help let go of big items. Way to go! 😊Keep on inspiring us! Love to see you maintain little areas too!

It's great watching declutter videos - you realize that you would dump all of the person's crap in an instant. Make me look at my own stuff still remaining in just 2 closets at this point a little more objectively.

I feel ya about the disappointment, but the seasonal storage/change out can be a game changer! 🌻
@leannekirk746 ай бұрын
Seasonal wardrobes is a great idea! I do this as I have a tiny wardrobe these days. I have to say I prefer it because when I'm deciding what to wear its much simpler. I put the other season's clothes in a big plastic tub in the garage. And when I change them over it only takes half an hour and I'm always excited to see clothes that I'd forgotten about. Its also the perfect opportunity to do a declutter as some items no longer appeal and its quite easy to let them go. I highly recommend a seasonal wardrobe. I do the same with shoes. Oh and I'm so excited that you got a dumpster! Yay! That will help out so much with the bigger items. Keep going, Mira, you got this ❤

Sometimes, the skills needed to meet a goal are not always super obvious. Decluttering is one skill, but efficient spatial organization is another. As you've already mentioned, upkeep is another skill. So, to meet your goal, you may just need different storage options. I use cube organizers for my clothing (like in the scrapbook room). Like you, I mostly wear yoga pants and T-shirts, so wrinkling isn't a big issue. There are tons of videos on how to roll/fold jeans, leggings, t-shirts, etc... to save space and they can then be stacked in the cubes. They take up less room and you can still see all the items (more or less). Plus you can categorize by cube, superhero, dog, flower T's, etc. The next thing is vacuum bags for bulky/seasonal items and extra pillows/blankets/dog beds. This really reduces the volume and keeps things dust free. And they can be stored under the bed, for when needed. For hanging storage, if possible, use velvet hangers with metal hooks as they are much thinner than plastic ones. "Magic hangers" allow you to hang multiple items in almost the same space as one item. Also, keeping more than you can reasonably store, at the moment, is OK. As you wear items, you get the chance to evaluate them and you may be able to pare them down over time. And the idea of rotating out items is a great one. You are doing amazingly well. Thanks for sharing!

May I make a suggestion about your water bottles? It might be less expensive to invest in a water filter for your kitchen faucet rather than spend as much on bottled water.

I think the sentimental and emotional items are challenging, which is why Marie Kondo recommends saving those for last. Not sure if that would work for you, but it's something to consider. 400 items is AMAZING. Excellent work.

A suggestion if you can’t get the tv tray and cart to work together. Some of those carts, like from Michael’s, have lids you can get so the top could be your tray and the other baskets for items.

Your Kolt (?) and my cat Pixie would get along perfectly!! He likes taking off the bottle caps and Pixie likes playing with them!! One time when she was a baby (we got her at 4mos) she got her paw stuck under the fridge grate. She howled and we came running!! I lifted the fridge and hubby Mike picked her up...wandered her to me for me to check all her little toes and give kisses. 💜✝️🙏🏻And thank God she was fine. She is now 15 years old. 🐈⬛mostly black hair Tortie. Love her to pieces!! I could go on and on...😂😂

I'm a little late to the party this time. I've had an unusually busy couple of weeks, so I feel bad I haven't really even touched base with you, but I am super happy to hear about the dumpster that you got.🤗 I will text you to see when you have it and maybe I can come help fill it. Thanks for the vid, dear Mira!❤️

Tricks or things you can try: - everytime you leave a room to go to another room, take one thing with you that goes in the room you are going into. This does not always work, because your hands might be full, but try to make it work as often as possible to build a habbit. - Find places where you personally need stuff and put it there, despite it maybe looking weird. For example: I have a small trashcan on a shelf otherwise used for decorations, near my couch. It looks out of place, but before I had it there, I used to put my candy wrappers, used tissues and other small trash on my couch "to clean up later". That did not feel good nor look nice.

You are doing so well. I am so proud of you. You are an inspiration. 🎉 Idea: have a quilt made from all the leggings that mean something and don't fit. That way, you have a practical piece that is filled with memories.

Hi, Mira , Clay and Colt ❤ I was thinking that if you want to keep the areas that you already declutter out of more clutter is to have a home for each item.," Don't put it down put it away" as My hoarders hearts usually says. In the backyard do you have nice furniture that you can use when is all declutter, at least one or two pieces? Like the bookshelves? I can visualize it at the laundry room when you tackle that area with you laundry supplies.
@barbb1266 ай бұрын
Colt has actually helped in his own way, by scratching at that bag. Like he was saying “Hey Mom, you didn’t finish this!” 😄 Btw, if/when you feel ready to let go of some of those leggings, I’d be happy to buy a few!

Hey Mira, you are brave for showing your insecurities and ask for help and advice- that and staying in motion are the biggest achievements of the last year. Congratulations!🎈 I have that cart also and I love it to pieces. Sits right next to me right now, too shelve with al my to-dos, middle for daily journaling and the bottom.. stuff that I might need in my purse and some tools, I guess 😅 You will find a place, and I am sure you’ll love it just as much as I do. Thanks to St. Ingmar for this! Problem with your clothes.. if you’re a little like me you do the best you can, hope for a miracle and are disappointed it didn’t happen this time either. Watch back your video, you’ll see that you are not yet completely honest with yourself, and don’t believe in (or haven’t clearly visualized) your goal yet. You can tell yourself that this is only the first pass, and future Mira will take care of the second and third and fourth pass. But you can not forget that future Mira will be discouraged by the work you leave her, because she is a newbie and easily tired out too! Also you can not hope that somehow Hermine will grow your closet so everything will fit. She’s a busy woman! What you CAN do is tell present Mira, that your past self organized it all so it’s way easier to declutter now- because you have a perfectly clear overview now of what you own in which category, and you don’t have to be afraid that you’ll be left with with nothing and butt naked if you let go of more. 400 was a good start, but it was to make categorizing easier and not to fit it all. That will be second passes job. And: you can absolutely do it, you have proven that a lot. Give present Mira a hug from me please 💜
@leolewanay6 ай бұрын
Maybe it would be less discouraging to focus on a percentage of "let gone things" rather than a number ? Considering that you own an unusually high number of items (clothes in particular), 400 items may sound like a lot as a number but is not that much considering the total amount of items you have. This way, you may get a better overview of the stage you are currently in, would keep a more acurate track of your progress and may not get disappointed when realising your imagination has led you further on then you really were ? It's a journey, it's a learning process and you've really strongly started the journey and are learning (and teaching !) therefore... no regrets, you've still a lot to discover, to explore, to share, to see, and to try, like a real adventure ! ^^ And we're all here to cheer you up and learn with you !
