Pattern attached to Dowel
Hey guys! This tutorial is part of a series I am working on that focuses on the reverse double half hitch knot. I wanted to create a valentine’s themed pattern for you and this is what I ended up with. I initially created this pattern that could be used to add to your work but then I thought it would look adorable as a keychain so I went ahead and created that for you too! The first section of this tutorial is the initial pattern attached to a dowel and the second part is the key chain. If you are only interested in the key chain skip ahead to 9:28. As always, a quick like, comment and subscribe really does help me out. Thanks so much. Let’s get started.
Cut 4 3-ft pieces of 5mm string in the colours rose tea and linen. The set up for this design was a bit tricky. If you look at the cord placement at the top the cords alternate until you get to the middle, then two cords of the same colours then alternating cords again. With macrame that doesn’t really work because when you add one cord to your work it creates two hanging cords. To adjust for this all I did was use a thin piece of tape to connect two different coloured cords and then hid that at the back of my work like this. Tape one of each colour together and then add then to your dowel as I’ve done here.
Row 1: Use the outside cord as your as your working cord and tie 3 reverse dhhks moving down and to the right. Repeat on the right side of your work. Tie one more reverse dhhk using the centre left cord as your working cord and the centre right cord as your filler cord.
Row 2: Use the second cord from the left as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk working to the left. Use the second cord from the left as your working cord and tie two reverse dhhks working to the right. Repeat on the right side of your work. Tie one more reverse dhhk using the centre left cord as your working cord and the centre right cord as your filler cord.
Row 3: Repeat row 1. If you’re only wanting to tie one heart then finish here.
If you’re wanting to tie a continuous pattern of hearts then continue to alternate between row 1 and 2, finishing off the pattern with row 1.
Keychain
Cut one 2-ft piece of 3mm string in the colour rose tea and set it aside for now. Cut 2 4-ft pieces of 3mm string in the colours rose tea and linen.
To create the keychain the pattern is the same but the set up is a bit different. You can see both sides of a keychain so I didn’t want to tape the cords together. Instead I figured out a way to attach the cords so that they hung appropriately. Here is how I did it.
Fold one piece of 3mm linen string in half and attach it to your key ring using a cow hitch knot. Grab a piece of 3mm rose tea string and attach it to your work as I’ve done here. This will create a larks head knot that overlaps the cow hitch knot so that the cords hang appropriately. Attach the two remaining 4-ft cords using this same process. Here is what it should look like once finished.
If you created the pattern during the first part of this tutorial then you can use the same process to create the pattern here. For those that skipped the first section, I’ll add the instructions again for you here.
Grab the 2-ft piece of rose tea string, flip your work over and tie a gathering knot. Fold the piece of string so that the short side is 3 inches long. Place it behind the keychain and then wrap the long cord around all strands 4 times. Pull the long string through the loop and then pull the ends tight. Cut the top string and then pull on the bottom string to hide the end. Leave the bottom string, it will blend in with the other string. Pull on the string to adjust the gathering knot so it sits where you want it. Trim, brush the string out, and then trim again.
I have one more valentines day themed tutorial so say tuned for that next week! Thanks for watching!
