Materials:
Approx. 375ft of 5mm Premium or Recycled String (Mustard)
Driftwood or Dowel (19 inches in length)
Hey guys! I have a full wall hanging tutorial for you today. Let's get started.
Cut 12 pieces of string, each piece is 10 ft in length. Cut 10 pieces string, each piece is 14 ft in length. Cut 22 pieces of string, each piece is 5 ft in length.
Attach the string to the driftwood in this order using Lark’s Head knots - two 10 ft pieces, five 14 ft pieces, two 10 ft pieces, leave a 1.5-2 inch space, two 10 ft pieces, leave a 1.5/2 inch space, two 10 ft pieces, 1.5/2 space, two 10 ft pieces, 5 14 ft pieces, two 10 ft pieces.
We will start by tying square knots (SKs) to create a SK lattice at the back of our work. Tie a SK with the 4 cords on the left. Skip 10 cords and then tie another SK. Tie one more SK with the next 4 cords on the right. Repeat that on the right side of your work.
Tie another row of alternating SKs about 1 inch down from the first row. Tie 3 SKs in the middle first. We will tie two more SKs in the sides of our work. Before we do that, grab the 10 cords in between and flip them over the top of your driftwood (we will use these cords later to create a layer in the front).
Skip the first 4 cords and tie another row of alternating SKs across your work.
Skip the first 6 cords and tie another row of alternating SKs across your work.
Tie 2 more rows of alternating SKs, tie 2 then 1 SK per row.
Grab the 22 5-ft pieces of string. Fold each piece in half and attach to the bottom of the SK section as I’m doing here using a Cow Hitch knot. Attach 3 pieces to the outer sections on the left and right and then 2 pieces to each of the other sections.
Here is what it will look like once the string is added - 3 pieces added to these sections and 2 pieces added to the remaining sections. Use the outer cord as your filler cord and tie a row of double half hitch knots (dhhks) until you reach the centre of your work. Repeat on the right side.
Tie one more dhhk with the two middle cords to connect the two sides.
Bring the cords on both sides to the front of your work to create the front layer.
We will tie a series of 4 diamonds with a berry knot in the middle of the 1st and 3rd and a square knot in the middle of the 2nd and 4th.
Use dhhks to tie the top half of the diamond. Tie one dhhk with the centre cords then tie 4 dhhks on both sides.
To create the berry knot tie 3 SKs. Pull the filler cords through the centre of the diamond and then tie one more SK to hold the berry knot in place.
Tie another 4 dhhks on both sides of your work and then one more dhhk in the middle of you work to create the bottom half of the diamond.
Tie another diamond this time only tying one SK in the middle of the diamond.
Tie one more diamond with a berry knot and one more diamond with a SK. The repeat that process on the right side of your work.
Here is what it should look like once you’ve tied 4 diamonds on each side.
Before we connect the sides in the middle we will tie 4 rows of dhhks on the bottom right side of the diamond. Tie 4 dhhks for the first row, 3 for the second, 2 for the third and then 1 dhhk for the last row. Repeat that process on the other side of your work tying your dhhks on the bottom left side of the diamond.
We will now connect the two sides by tying a dhhk with the two middle cords. Use those two cords as your filler cord and tie 9 dhhks on both sides to create the top half of a diamond. Tie 4 SKs in the middle of the diamond as I’ll do here.
Next we will tie the bottom half of the diamond. We are going to add a bit if detailing on the sides. To do this, we will switch up the order of the cords we are using the tie the dhhks. Grab the cord to the left of the square knots, bring it behind the other cords and tie a dhhk. Continue this process until you’ve used all of the cords on the left then tie the remainder of the dhhks with the cords underneath the SKs until you’ve reached the middle of the diamond. Repeat on the right side of your work. Tie one more dhhk in the middle of your work to connect the two sides.
We will add a bit of detailing to the back layer of the wall hanging by adding two sets of 4 SKs on each side of our work. Cut the ends to your desired length and shape. I’ve cut mine so that they sit approx. 2 ft down from the driftwood on the sides and 3 ft down from the driftwood in the middle. Thanks so much for watching!
