Lotus Elan S4 - Engine & Gearbox Removal

Video shot in early August 2021, removing the engine and gearbox from the rolling chassis of our Elan, now the body had been removed.
Although far easier than removing the engine with the body in situ, it still presents challenges, mostly as it is a very tight fit with the ZF gearbox our car has fitted!

So is that a Ford Cortina engine with a lotus head? I wonder why the lotus head has a built in intake manifold? That is a little odd. What transmission is that? I've seen elans with I believe T9 transmissions? You have done some great vids. Really like the Elan.

Largely yes, the Lotus Twincam was based on the Ford 116E with a custom Lotus head. I’ll need to do a video on the engines and specifically ours, which the rebuild revealed had quite an interesting history. Transmission video is on the to do list also, it’s a ZF 5speed unit. Quite a bit larger than the original equipment Ford 2000e 4speed box

Yeah, it was a tough edit. Trying to compress 2.5hrs in to something of a length people would find bearable. Lots of back and forth etc. I’ll make the re-assembly slower (and try and keep the language more in-check so I don’t have to put music over all of it 😳)
