Modern sportscars have a very broad range of abilities. They're just as comfortable as they are thrilling. But sometimes you don't need heated seats, a big boot or sat-nav to enjoy driving. Enter the Lotus Elise Cup 250, a stripped-back, single-minded car built for one thing and one thing only: to have fun! #gwfirst

The gearbox is also from Toyota. So no chance of that breaking... I've been running an old 2006 S2 Elise daily this winter and it's been 100% reliable.

I have had an Elise since they came out in the US in 2005. In almost 20 years, and 50,000 miles, the only issue has been an engine temp sensor which was easily replaced. That's it. Lotus cars of today are a lightyear ahead of Lotus cars from the 70s-80s in terms of reliability.

Still using the same rubbish engine after all these years!, Needs a Honda S2000 engine/gearbox combo (similar power but NA), optionally with a TTS supersport supercharger for 400BHP, LSD also ... Didn't they have a similar 240 version 10 years ago?

D12 W12 different engine, they had to change from the 2ZZ to the 2ZR due to emissions. No where near as much character as the 2ZZ. The K20 and F20 Honda engines are awesome don’t get me wrong but the 2ZZ is brilliant in its own right, Definitely not rubbish. You should try driving one and see
@BlatentlyFakeName

The 1zz was better than the 1.6 they replaced it with too. Much more low down torque and the car was actually quicker to 60 than the early S3s. They are good engines, very durable. But the Elise isn't about the engine, it's about the chassis. Also Lotus have had a long standing partnership with Toyota, not Honda...

I HATE when drivers take their hands OFF the steering wheel to emphasise a point esp when talking about road feedback through the steering wheel!!

Well i heard its a reliable Toyota Engine. I wouldn't waste my time supercharging it but rather a turbo. I'd more than double the horsepower because im a tuner. The Engineers just dont know crap how to make hellacious horsepower. My 1.8l honda made 300hp. Pshh leave it to the pros.

They are all hand built. So they can only make a limited number at once. Also, limiting production allows them to avoid certain EU regulations (e.g. not needing loads of airbags, or keeping to strict exhaust noise limits etc). Because there is an exception for "low volume" production cars.

You don't see that many on the streets because there aren't that many made. Also, most people who has one does not use it as a daily drive. Every single Elise built was sold. And even used ones are hard to find nowadays. So... sorry but you are wrong ;-)
