Lou Rawls - Here's That Rainy Day (1972)

(I've waited years for this to show up on YT, thankyouthankyouthankyou.) From the 1972 LP "Silk and Soul." Although he's always been one of my favorite singers, I never cared much for this LP, except for THIS cut, which I think is stunningly beautiful. From the opening Aaron Copeland-esque introduction (which also closes the track, making it a masterpiece of envelope construction), I knew I was in for something special: Compliments to arranger Reg Powell, who may also be the brilliant pianist on this. This tune is the Burke/Van Huesen masterpiece, one of my favorite standards, even though I've always considered it to be slightly lyrically clumsy... ...but not when Brother Lou sings it. When he declaims this, the lyric is graceful, and sounds as though it could not be improved upon. I kept the whole LP just for this cut.

@@raymondhanks9826 you're quite welcome, Raymond. This just popped up in my feed a month ago, and I was familiar with the song already, but hadn't heard a vocal version. Lou does it justice, beautifully. Also recommend ( if you're not already familiar) this same song done by pianist Bill Evans--- it's just the piano, but what Bill does with the chord progression is simply exquisite.
