Always thought the piece at the end of the Street Hassle section was one of the greatest bits of writing in music history. You know, some people got no choice And they can never find a voice To talk with that they can even call their own So the first thing that they see That allows them the right to be Why they follow it You know, it's called bad luck

@Brandon lol. When I first listened to this album, I don't know, I think I bought it about a decade after it came out. Those very lyrics I became obsessed with, and I'm still thinking it's the best rock-and-roll line I've ever heard. But when you say it, you gotta have a gap between, "you know what it's called called?", and .... "bad luck". And of course Lou's NY/Queens accent helps. Never have any musical lyrics (poetry) rung so true for me. To me, it's like the most streetwise comment one could ever make. I still say it to myself every once in awhile. Even being at a place like Target or a shopping mall, lol, when you're lookin' at some character, and you just shake your head. "....bad luck" hahahaha lmao

@pommelhorsepommelhorse8731 omg you rescued me just in time. Every year this is the first song I play as soon as the New Year's hits. I was thinking of switching, but your reply, your karma, just made me think about it again. Looks like another year I'm going to listen to this song as soon as I wake up on New Year's Day. grateful

I had thought for a couple of years that Simple Minds had written this, when I heard the brilliant Sparkle In The Rain record back in 1984. Then in 1987 I saw U2 at Wembley Stadium and Lou Reed was a special guest. He did this song live (wonderfully) and I realised I was very wrong!

There was a very brief time, on the NYC music scene...pre-punk, new wave, more experimental. Pre Art Rock, little clubs like "Max's Kansas City", CBGB. These people came out of the Factory atmosphere, created by Warhol. Nico, Velvet Underground, Lou Reed and David Johansson. Check it out. He does sound like Dylan.

First of all, props for you listening to this one all the way through. (Even I skip the instrumentals sometimes, and it’s one of my favorite songs. lol.) It’s actually a small dream of mine if I ever get married, to have violinists playing the opening to this song as people are waiting to take their seats for the ceremony. Literally no one would get it but me and handful of friends, but I don’t care. lol. I also enjoyed that you seemed to enjoy my personal favorite part when he goes: “Love has gone away…took the rings off my fingers, and there’s no-thing left to say-a-ay…” Fantastic song.

No Dylan, but some Springsteen if you listen carefully.....the video is a montage from Warhol's factory footage and some clips from Lola Schnabel's film that backed the 2006 live performances of Berlin...

Great pic, as usual man. Fyi....video (or at least the coke bottle part) is from a "screen test" with Warhol from 1966, so unrelated to the song (1978).
