This was about 20 years or so ago, and John is still talking about that "5th grade report card" he got. I think Vinny is spot on here. The big reason John is so obnoxious is because he's always on the offense thinking that he's going to be attacked. I'll never get what John's obsession is with what money other people are making.

What’s to understand? Jay wanted to take John in an effort to gain some of the 18-24 demographic but John wouldn’t leave to be a freelance correspondent so they made him the announcer who was going to do bits, like Kimmel and that guy who’s name I don’t remember but don’t want to get wrong because I don’t want to seem racist. Problem is, they thought John actually wrote/improvised his questions and was actually talented or funny and didn’t realize that John didn’t do anything other than parrot questions written by actual funny people. Then when they realized he couldn’t even announce, they would pre-record his intros and camera appearances. By the end he wasn’t even “on” the show
