My dad owned an ad agency that handled AMC Canada's business. They used to give him free cars to drive. He was British, modest and very non-showy, so he'd always ask for the big Ambassador station wagons, the woodies. But one time they gave him a Javelin. I was 10 when this thing rumbled into the driveway one late afternoon. I couldn't believe it. He said he hated it and was going to return it and ask for another car. I begged him to keep it, but he said no, he wanted a four-door, not a muscle car. I said, "But I want a muscle car!" He sent it back a few days later and came home in... an AMX. Rocked up the drive in that, even louder and wilder looking. He told me they'd made a mistake. But we got to keep it for a few months. I even got him to gun it out on the highway a few times. It was the only time in his life my dad had a fast car. He was too British, or something, to enjoy it. Then again, he had flown Spitfires in combat over Europe. So maybe an AMX was too boring.

Everything on that beauty was excellent except SOME IDIOT VARNISHED THE ENTIRE UNDERHOOD COMPARTMENT AND HOSES. Used car salesmen used that ploy to make old beaters look "factory new", and it really irks me. I had a '70 Javelin and it is, without a doubt, my favorite car of all time. I rebuilt the 390 with a mild Crower cam so it put out 425hp with at least 450ft/lb of torque, and it had a lope to the idle which soothed the savage beast. Borg T-10 close-ratio, Hurst shifter.
