As a 66 yr old, who grew up in the '50s-early 60's, this '59 Caddy has always represented the absolute ultimate in America's explosive growth and dominance post World War ll...I know there are folks who deride the car, as just too over the top, gaudy, showy, whatever, but I say, there has never been anything like it before or since...and I thank you for showing off this masterpiece, in all of its red and white glory,(simply the best colors to display this gem)...PS...I have heard many younger folks say they wish they were alive during this time period, to have experienced these cars in real time!)

Lou, I'll look forward as well to that '50's ride video , am sure it will bring back great memories....I actually wish you had opened that trunk to the caddy...when Jay Leno pops the trunks on these '50s land yachts(on his channel Leno's Garage), he invariably say something like "I rent out this space to a family of 4 on the weekends"!..lol...the available space was simply awesome, the trunk just swallowed up suitcase after suitcase for those long family trips!

This is the epitome of 1959. No one did it better and there was alot of competition. Every car in 1959 was a masterpiece of it's own. Not like today where they all look alike. So glad I grew up in the 50's and 60's !

OMG, I'm 66 years old now. My uncle wanted to give me a '62 Caddy and my dad wouldn't let me have it. But this.....this is the King of Cadillacs. I would dearly love to have this baby. I wouldn't dare drive this as a daily driver. I would drive it maybe once or twice a month to take my wife out to eat. A real beauty and classic.

The most iconic Cadillac of all time! That front end is enough to scare children! HA HA. Too big for me to drive, but I love it. I love the color and the two-toned seats and it looks GREAT in red. I'd love to see one in that light purple or light pinkish color that some Cadillacs are famous for. Love the detail of your videos - as always...Whenever I see these cars with wing windows...I'm reminded how much we miss them.

This is an absolute timepiece, probably most gorgeous car on the market for 1959, those Tail Fins win Top Dog and as a Chrysler fan the coolest looking back end still has to be the 63 Chrysler turbine, granted it doesn't have fins but that's what the Imperial is for and I think that come in second place.

What a beauty- I have a question, do they make replacement body panels like front and rear quarters for those cars like they do for most old muscle cars? I could only imagine trying to get those panel straight after years of rust and accidents. Owner deserves lots of credit for rescuing that poor car sitting for 26 years. Restoring an old Caddy with all that chrome is just a labor of love an I could only imagine the cost and time involved. I am 60 now so do remember when those old luxury barges were floating over the streets, my Father had a 66 Toronado and we all know about those.

I think this year was the high point for Cadillac. From 60 on each year lost a little bit more prestige until now, Cadillac is just another car. My 83 Coupe de Ville and my 87 Brougham were certainly nice, but this 59 is a masterpiece. Wow

When my dad retired from the Navy, 25 years, we moved from Jax, To to S. Carolina, his home state. There were 6 of us kids plus mom and dad. He bought a 59 C de Ville and rented a uhaul and off we went. It was tihht but we all fit, lol.

Lou Costabile, Please let me know what’s going on around the 3-min., 30-sec. position where the image compresses vertically when the camera is lowered, and stretches back to normal height a few seconds later when the camera is raised. This could have been done in post, perhaps to exaggerate the width of the car, but it doesn’t seem that anyone would have gone to the trouble. Please reply. Thanks, Steve

Yes, you are right about the camera. Early in my KZbin videoing (which is this video) KZbin would ask "Would you like to stabilize your video" and although you'd think this is a good thing, you sadly see the results. I've learned the lesson the hard way and current and future videos do not have this issue. remember when new they were just loads , useless loads ...throw in the air ride no springs and it was a 1 year waste of time ..just out of h.s. I worked for a caddy dealer around 1962-63 one of my jobs as a kid was to start up all the 59's with air ride and pump them up so a buyer would not see the bumpers on the ground .... they would never take one in as a trade [ air ride ] .. just a load

+Bryce They usually go over a $100,000 depending on the condition - some less some higher. A nice restoration or original in great condition usually bring in around $125,000. Best way to check is go to Hemmings and search for 1959 Cadillac Series 62 convertibles.

It’s a beautiful car, but it is my least favorite Cadillac of all time until the 1986 Eldorado and Seville. What in the heck were the designers thinking in all three cases.

We had a ‘59 Series 62 coupe. It didn’t have Vs in the backup lights. This one doesn’t have the series 62 coupe’s door panels. But these are the same as another red series 62 convertible on YT, so are probably correct. The front grille contains 300 pieces of aluminum, clipped together. Always looked good with normal washing, never pitted or tarnished.

Lou Costabile These videos are great for reminiscing, but also because, as in the case of the ‘59 Caddy, they illustrate how successful Detroit had become at schooling the public that luxury, prestige and, to some extent, safety, equated with chrome, size and weight. Having grown up with a ‘59 Cadillac, I know I would not want one as a daily driver. Aside from safety concerns, 12/18 mpg economy, and clumsy handling on bias ply tires, it was not ergonomic: the low roofline meant low, flat, unsupportive front seats and a very low rear seat, due to the sloping rear window, whose size turned the back seat into a solar oven on sunny days. Visibility was outstanding, however. OTOH, our black coupe sparkled when freshly waxed and parked in a brightly lit parking lot. It had plenty of power, but it was, to me, at least, a car that commanded respect, should be well cared for and driven sedately. Also, it never lost its new car aroma, which I still recall...
