Hi, Lou! In 1959, Buick came out not only with totally new "Delta wing" styling with those fabulous fins and those impossible to ignore cocked headlamps, but also with completely new series names across the board. The LeSabre series replaced the Special at the entry level, the Invicta took over for the Century, and the Electra and Electra 225 succeeded the Super and Roadmaster. While they were pretty bold, they did back off on the chrome quite a bit compared to the '58s. I can understand how family can influence your taste in cars. Just like Paul took after his uncle, I myself wouldn't mind having a 1961 Chevy as my grandfather did. This is definitely one you don't get to see often. Many thanks to you and Paul for letting us see it!

My uncle had a 1959 LeSabre painted Tampico Red. I aways admired it. Bought new in fall, 1958 when I was a mere babe. I have the 1958 license plate from it with these odd chrome edging pieces surrounding it. Those gas pedal start Buicks always start with a flourish, and this one proves it. Thanks, Paul and Lou, for showing it in this video. Brings back lots of memories.

When I was much younger, I had a mostly negative opinion of Harley Earl's late 1950s designs. I had a similar dislike for most of Virgil Exner's Chrysler designs. The exceptions were the 1957 and 1958 Plymouth Furys...absolutely stunning cars! Well, as the years passed and my youthful/harsh opinions mellowed, I realized that both Earl and Exner were very much in tune with American culture and tastes. The 1950s were a transformational time and "modern" designs were finding their way into virtually all domestic consumer goods. Clothing/shoes and hair styles, furniture, appliances, architecture, automobiles and popular music. World War II and Korea were long over and America was proudly leading the world in standard of living and its consumer goods were the envy of the world. Americans eagerly awaited the introduction of the latest "new and improved" products... from refrigerators and Hi Fi record players to the latest from Detroit. Harley and Virgil understood perfectly, what the car buying public wanted...and delivered with lots of chrome to spare. Two tone paint, giant tail fins, huge V8 engines and styling that set tradition on its ear...and it all fit perfectly! I'm well into my 70s now, and I take my hat off to both Mr. Earl and Mr. Exner...I simply can't imagine our automotive history without them...BRAVO!

Harley Earl retired in 1958 because GM mandated a 65 year old retirement age. His original plan was for GM's divisions to use warmed over 1958 designs. However, while Earl was in Europe in the summer of 1956, Bill Mitchell quashed those plans after spying on Chrysler Corporation's upcoming 1957 cars.

I have a similar walking to school story. I was about five years old in 1965, walking one morning to school and I had always liked looking at the parked cars. I always felt that the front ends of the cars were like faces, I was fanciful and imaginative even back then LOL. Anyway I saw the gray rear end with the red lights and the slanted brows that reminded me of the cartoons that I watched when the characters were angry. I began to walk a little bit quicker past the car and then turned around and saw the front end. I kid you not, I ran past the next five cars making sure I could get away! :-). Later, after school let out I had the crossing guard cross me to the other side of the street so I wouldn’t be frightened by the sinister mean looking car :-)

Incredible vehicle Paul Maas, I love the GM 59's, so much style and character! I have my Dad's 59 El Camino (he was the second owner, bought in 1960) but it is nowhere near as clean as this Buick. Thanks for sharing with us!

Hello Everyone. Thanks for viewing my 59 Buick. I just wanted you all to know that I had that squeak fixed two days after I met Lou. She had been scheduled for a “hip replacement” for several weeks. It was a failing U-Joint. Big project on that car since it has a torque tube drive.

Thanks Lou, and thanks Paul. That's a beautiful car. I don't think there's anyone that wouldn't love having that Buick. Any idea what the UFO sounds are? The sounds don't seem to match up with a belt squeak.

You're welcome discerningmind. Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Two days after this video the u joint was replaced and that eliminated the noise issue.

@@loucostabile I had to sell, last year. my beloved orange Audi A2. I had really hoped to send it back to the States when the stupid 25 year rule expired in 2025. It wasn't to be. One of the German guys who expressed an interest in buying it for his wife, had me show it to her. She took one look and said, in German of course, 'oh, no way! I'm not driving an orange car! I told you, I want a silver car!'. She was basically yelling this at her husband. Simply re-enforced my opinion that silver is far too popular, therefore, since I don't want to be like everybody else, I hate silver. But that Buick did look good in silver. I enjoy your vids....

I had a 59 Le Slobber that I purchased from the city fire department when it was several years old, but it had hardly ever been used. Yes, it was fire engine red. Very low mileage. Very reliable car but, gas mileage was nothing to brag about. 11 or 12 miles per gallon, but it had a 21 gallon tank and gas was under 40 cents a gallon!! Reliable car, sure would like to have it back.

The wildcat aircleaner is a great look on this engine, not factory-spec, but definitely the kind of thing you'd see back in the day when those who kept their car and worked on it went looking for ways to improve here and there. The cleaner came from the same junkyard heap the 4barrel was in, worn as a unique badge of honor.
