I believe someone already identified the side lights as cornering lamps. This was Mercury's version of the Galaxie 500 7 Litre of the same year. It was actually a performance package for the 66 Mercury Monteray 2 Dr hardtops and convertibles. I believe that they were relatively rare.

Never saw one before this. Would be even cooler if it had the 427 Side Oiler. I wonder if any S-55's were built with the 427. Im a Mopar guy but my favorite Ford's are the R-Code 427 cars...the 63 1/2 and 65 Galaxie's and 66-67 Fairlane's especially. I've seen a 64 Marauder that was a factory 427 car but have never seen another
@larryhawkins32945 жыл бұрын
Mr Thompson I believe that 1965 was the last year that the 427 side oiler was offered in large Mercurys. 1967 was the last year the 427 was offered in the big Ford's. The only engine that came with the S55 was the 428 which was a new engine offering for FoMoCo in 1966. It was also optional on the Thunderbird which had the 390 4V V8 standard.

Gorgeous styling as well as fit and finish. Beautiful interior metalwork and white upholstery. Evocative of the mid '60's era. A very solid example of Mercury's appeal.

The 427 side oiler was available in full sized Fords except the wagons. It was available in a limited number of Fairlanes and Comets. 1965 was the last year the 427 side oiler was offered on big Mercury's. This S-55 is Mercury's equivalent to the Galaxie 500 7 Litre. The bucket seat vinyl seating surfaces that were a part of the S-55 package were Park lane quality not Monteray. This is a rare surviving vehicle especially in convertible form. Thanks for the video Lou.

That is a gorgeous vehicle. Growing up in Detroit in the early 70s, I knew two people who had these, they both worked for Ford, and we had lots of auto workers in my neighborhood, so lots of new cars too. One of them was a rag top and one was a coupe with vinyl top and a 4-speed manual. The color of this one is so much nicer then my neighbors. I came across your page by chance and I hadn’t thought of these cars in 45 years. Think he would ever sell it? I would be interested.

Thanks, another great car.. I bought a new 66 Monterey 2DHT with a 390ci and a 3speed on the column. It was a great road car. FYI the CHP said they used them because the long rear overhang balanced the car for great handling.

It's just a sports performance designation Mercury used to designate those kind of vehicles. The Comet was S-22, the mid sized Meteor was the S-33 and the big Marc was S-55.

It's hard to believe that the interior is original especially the driver's seat. The engine bay is really clean. There was a Ford Galaxie 500 7-Litre that had the same 428 cubic inch V8. It is really cool that it is a convertible. Too bad it doesn't have A/C. As rare as this car is you could probably count on two hands the number of 66 Super S-55 convertibles had A/C. Awesome car!

I owned a 66 Montclair that was the same color. It had a 390, a bench seat and shifted on the column. The body looked the same but it was a 2 door hardtop. It was an absolute gas hog, getting around 10mpg. I started working out of town and had to get rid of it. I traded it in 1972 for a Toyota Corolla with a 1600cc "lawnmower" engine in it. Culture shock.

I wish people who wanna talk cars knew what they were talking about. 1st, he starts off saying it's a '67 and it's not. 2nd, he calls the CORNERING light a "side marker." Ford never put side markers on their cars until 1968.

The 427 side oiler was unavailable on Mercury in 1966. The S55 was actually an optional package for the Mercury Monteray 2 Dr hardtops and convertibles. The 428 V8 was a part of that package as the std engine on a Monteray was a 390 2V V8. This car was Mercury's version of the Ford Galaxie 500 7 Litre.

Looking at the VIN plate and under the hood, its, definitely been repainted. I would bet upon a in person inspection it would be more obvious, makes me wonder about the claim of sitting in a dealer showroom for 30 years.
