Yup, that compressor sounds like it's on its last legs. As homeowners, we should probably keep our ears out for strange humming noises like this and call a pro asap. Even if it's blowing cold air.

My AC unit, a Trane, original to the house built in 2001 (so 23 years old) is getting pretty loud just like this. Someone earlier said it sounds like a washing machine on spin cycle. Mine does. I have to wait for it to die before my home warranty will replace or repair anything. I do have someone coming by next week for a tune-up. My ex-husband in our house we bought together, it couldn't cool the house down below 85⁰ when it was just fine before in higher outdoor temperatures. His home warranty refused to repair it because it was still "running," even though it couldn't do its job. They had to spend $7,000 out of their own pockets for a new system. It was beyond repair. That's my biggest nightmare. My HVAC system is the only original appliance on my house. The water heater & all kitchen appliances (fridge, dishwasher, stove/oven, & microwave) were replaced soon after I moved in in 2019. The HVAC age & later, noise, is why I'm paying for a home warranty. Jist waiting for the compressor to die and ill have to suffer in a hot house for a few days.

Same sound for mine. Trane XR17 at 3.5 year check up it was below start amps at 98 (104 spec) then check 6 months later it was a 122 starting amps so I ask the guy about the compressor since it is obviously in a hurt. He told my they won't replace it until I got a "Hard Start Kit" installed. So I went ahead and hid it done. It's now buzzing at around 80 dbs (3 ft away) and it is rated a 72 Dbs. I'm going to be barking for a new compressor (4.5 year old @10 year warrantee) at there next scheduled MX visit. If they don't I will file a complaint with the BBB and have to go it alone with another contractor outside of warrantee. Paid a bundle for this unit (Heat Pump).
@seangriffon65023 жыл бұрын
I would venture to say that this unit may of been overcharged at one time, and was slugging liquid, and finally has damaged the clutch in the scroll compressor. Also dirty condenser and evaporator coils can cause this damage as well. By the amp draw you are getting sounds like the compressors rotary scroll is not turning up to speed due to the slipping clutch as it is all chewed up. Like i say scroll compressors are not immune to liquid slugging damage, just like reciprocating compressors.

@@ianmartinez7927 that’s for the reply. We did replace the condenser. WAY quiet and it’s working a lot better. It’s still getting to 85 inside but it’s the damn roof and no insulation. @broken_font18812 жыл бұрын
No unfortunately the evaporator and Condenser coils in your current system are rated for pressures lower than that of 410a (the new standard). However if you have your compressor replaced by a certified technician they will be able to retrofit a freon similar to that of R-22. Other than that, you'll either have to replace your entire hvac system or find some R-22 which is getting impossible to find.
@dustinbrooks4397 Жыл бұрын
You can have a technician replace the old r22 compressor which has mineral oil in it. For a newer compressor with POE oil and they can use an appropriate retrofit such as 407c. I just did this on a friends AC unit.

As someone else stated, save your money if it's still running because who knows when it will quit on you.
