Is your air conditioner really noisy, loud, screeching, rattling, grinding, or hissing? The compressor or condenser fan sounds like a jet engine or a helicopter? Perhaps the contactor is buzzing up a storm. In this video I go over 14 reasons why an AC may be very noisy inside or outside while the unit is running. This is not an extensive list so if you know something I missed or have a correction to anything I said, I would love to see you in the comments section! Here is the sound blanket link I promised to add to the description:

I had a loud grinding noise coming from the condenser fan motor. Not a screeching noise and the motor turned freely with power disconnected. It would not do this all the time. Checked everything that you mentioned. The motor was a two speed Emerson motor. After many hours of checking it turned out to be a defective circuit board fan speed controller located inside the AC unit( Comfortmaker twenty years old). I bypassed this circuit board and installed a short jumper wire so the fan motor would work on high speed only and it works perfect. No more noise. This circuit board is no longer available anywhere. With 92 degrees outside I`am getting getting 53 degrees inside at top of furnace duct work before going in to main duct that feeds the house. I`am a retired electric utility service technician. Thanks so much for all your great videos!!!

@@WordofAdviceTV The wiring diagram on the inside of the AC access cover saved the day to help trace this problem down. It showed what wires fed the high and low speed on the fan motor and the circuit board. I just removed and taped the low speed connector and jumper the high speed connector to the AC feed. Circuit board has been disconnected.

This survey of 15 condenser noise problems is Brilliant. Not only does Jay clearly describe each noise and its possible cause, but the video is seamlessly edited to show the defect and repair it! Great list, should be required viewing for all A/C owners. Could save them a lot of money. One thing you could mention is the noise from a defrost cycle when it's a heat pump kind running in heating mode and outside temps are getting low. First time I heard that and it happened two or even three times in a row I was freaked out. But it's apparently quite normal and it's protecting the coils from freezing.

Well I did the brick for a while. I was at Home Depot and was looking for new screws since mine were stripped out and just happen to pickup some rubber washers. Just came home from a 14 hour shift to a house sitting around 82, inside unit was going 90-to-nothing but not cooling. Went outside and heard a loud, continuous buzzing. Followed this video’s suggestions and discovered it was the contactor. Some little ants had crawled inside the panel and obviously were trying to make a new home inside my contactor. Used some compressed air to get them out and tapped the contactor just like he said and voila! I have cool air again. Thanks

I wish I saw your video this morning. I just had a second AC guy come and look at my helicopter sounding air handler. (The first guy recommended a total $8K replacement.) The 2nd guy took 10 seconds to figure it was just a vibration! He literally just held the drain pan with his hand and it stopped. He figured out it needed a tightened of a few screws and it stopped. If I heard your story about the picture frame leaning on the furnace sooner I might have figured it out. Well worth $140 though, instead of a new AC unit!

I love all your reasons, but there is one very important one that you didn’t mention - this one should be done before anything else : make sure the outside unit is level. If the packing around the fan shaft is worn, this will create space between the fan shaft and the packing, which could result in a swinging of the fan, creating squeaks and an uneven fan sound. If a A/C unit has been sitting on patio stones for many years, patio stones will sink into the ground, creating a low side and high side of your A/C unit and your fan shaft will be rubbing on one side, instead of moving freely, creating noise. Every few years, I take a level and measure it, if it’s low on one side, I shim it up so it’s level with the other side. Gravity and leveling makes every machine work better.

Jay, you have the sound effects down perfectly. Also with a great explanation of what causes those sounds and the remedies to correct and fix the noises. When cleaning a unit do you ever use a coil cleaner with muriatic acid? My self I like using a mild spray bottle of a cleaner of Clean and green or mean and green cleaner. Then back flush removing the top cover and fan. I love that hamburger joke another good one you aced it again. LOL

Good to see you Clayton my friend! Glad you liked the video and the joke. 😄 I actually never use coil cleaner on condenser coils and most techs I know don't either. Some of those cleaners can be corrosive to the coil and in most cases using just water is more than enough. 🤷‍♂️ But as long as the coil gets cleaned, either way is good. But if you like the coil to be spotless than a coil cleaner sure does help with that 😎👍👍

My ac guy replaced the compressor, but the same problem keeps on coming back. It would run fine for some time, but sporadically make that loud noise from the compressor for few minutes, blowing warm air, and then it would work fine. Any thoughts on what could be the problem?

What a great and well done/explained vid. Thanx a Mil! I just had my outside Compressor unit and inside Heat Exchanger replaced 2 months ago. Love the new stuff. Its a beautiful nice looking Rheem brand unit. Only thing i dont like is when Compressor unit first starts up. Initially it makes that clunk buzz rattle noise but then runs quiet afterwards. I gather start up noise is because its one of those "scroll" type compressors in which you stated that thats a normal noise for scroll type compressors on start up. ● Is there any mod that can actually help quiet that start up noise?

Hello my friend...just vewed your 14 reasons for AC noises. Very good. If I may, I have an ocillating/pulsating hum coming from my AC unit. The AC unit cools well, fan works, no discernable hiss, buzzing, or the other sounds your described. I tried to determine where the sound is coming from. I checked downstairs where the furnace, blower, etc.,is located, checked the outside unit itself, as well as the house. The only location where I heard the hum is only in our bedroom. The AC unit is outside our outside bedroom wall. Any assistance or trouble shooting to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had the squealing condenser motor issue last year on my MILLER package ac unit and we we're actually able to get the motor ordered and installed in less than 48 hours from the time the squealing started

From your explanation my issue sounds like the contactor, is it something that needs to be addressed immediately in your opinion?

That video was very good. I noticed the 220V relay switch on my unit makes a loud noise when turning on or off, and the only reason the noise is loud is because it's screwed into the chassis. The chassis is all metal so it's pretty much an accoustic box which amplifies the sound by an incredible amount. I'm trying to figure out the best way to detach that switch, I'm thinking of a neoprene rubber ring of some sort that will prevent the switch contact hammer (whatever that's called) from vibrating the whole thing. I'm also looking for ways to dampen the reverberation of the sound in the protective metal grill fins, those all ressonate with the air flowing so I'm sure there are lots of decibels that can go away if I figure how to prevent them from vibrating. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome

Mahalo, Jay! ?: Any issues running a new Danby portable AC unit continuously for several days? I’m talking five days or so as we’re in a hot period for several days on the Pacific Northwest. Btw I covered the discharge hose with an insulated 6in hvac duct sock…👍🏼 Thanks!

Check for temp from duct.. If it's about 14 to 20 below the room temp, then our maxed out bro... One trick is to trickle water over the condenser coils outside.. Please know you generally can't get more than 20° below outside temp w/o more capacity.. It's physics bro.. Too much for answering here...

@@francom6230 hi Franco. The unit is working fine, I’m only wondering if leaving it running continuously for days is going to cause problems. Danby portable AC from Costco don’t have btu number handy. Thanks!

@Mario Dalla Riva With most air conditioners, it is actually harder on the compressor and fan motor if they are constantly turned on and off throughout the day than if you just run it continuously. The most wear and tear happens during start up. In short, it's okay to run it continuously for days. 👍 Stay cool Mario!

This is a great video! Thank you. What might be wrong if your outdoor unit sounds like a helicopter when running heat?

What might cause an extremely loud noise to emnate from the condenser for the fist 7 or so seconds after startup? The sound is some combination of an ice crusher and an old school gritty HOOONK of old fire alarm systems. My guess might be broken internal compresser suspension springs, causing the compresor to beat agaisnt the case for the first few seconds? Maybe as it builds pressure it alters the compressor dynamics that decreases the vibrations enough that it doesn't strike the compressor housing once it is running.
