This movie is by Mindaugis Bagdon, btw. Sadly, he died a few days ago. I have a credit at the end of this film. Mindaugis was an instrumental part of the 1970s Search & Destroy 'zine. He was a filmmaker who created scenes in films such as Apocalypse Now. He was a great person who will be missed!

Sorry to hear of his passing. Just last night I rewatched "Snake People" (aka "Isle of the Snake People", one of Boris Karloff's last films), on which Mr. Bagdon served as assistant cameraman.

I did sound at the Fab Mab from the mid 70s to the early 80s and I saw many of the shows. Ricky of the Sleepers, Sally Mutant, and Dede of UXA. I WAS THERE. Thanks for posting this.

How good were the Mutants!! I do believe '78 was the best year for the SF punk scene -- when the bands were each special and you'd always know a bunch of people at every show. And the venues were often equally unusual. Punk was still an underground, thriving, arty little scene, and Aquarius Records on Castro Street was the place to get the records and drop off your flyers. During the same year, I went down to LA to have a look, and the place was an airless, ugly ghost town with nothing going on -- as it remains. Seeing this vid, I instantly remembered that a mike stand in the hands of the Sleepers' Ricky was a very lethal thing ... and the Mutants never disappointed.

UXA 1:07; Dils 4:44; Avengers 7:05; Sleepers 8:59; Mutants 12:13. Never heard of the Sleepers. Rarely ever heard UXA. Saw 'em on a few flyers. A real moment in time. Very '78.

Sleepers featured Ricky Williams, first drummer for Crime and later with Toiling Midgets, on lead vocals. A compilation CD on Tim/Kerr Records came out in the 90s and is not too tough to find.

@@peterkuchenbrod5696I have that compilation, If I remember correctly huge booklet with lots of infos + i own the reissues of the classic releases by The Mutants and The Avengers. I think I've read about the Dils but this is the first time I hear Uxa and I love their sound, I definitely need to listen more and dig some informations

I went down the 1st wave punk rabbit hole a few times before in my life. I just started stumbling upon these early films and videos. Although sometimes some of the quality and content is a bit cringe, I do imagine what it must have been like for real. Especially with the little city footage at the beginning.I like to see the (now old) youth of yesterday. When i look at it from 2023 perspective, this stuff seems like its from the dark ages, but when i think about it. This was like 17 years before I was born, so in that sense I feel a little distant connection to it. Kinda melancholy really
@johndoeiii6103 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I find newer punk bands way more cringey then the older ones. I got into the old bands when I was like 11-12 and honestly something about them is just unique and give a feeling that is hard to find in music now.
