I'm not even a guitarist and I find myself entranced by this guy - I simply love listening to him talk and love his music.

"Wow, Paul Gilbert can play jazz now - let's all be very scared." Another reason why Guthrie is so great is just how much respect he has for his fellow guitarists. He has an attitude that we can always learn from each other, even when we get to a level, such as his, where we are very accomplished. Phenomenal guitar player and guitar theorist.

In addition to being a great player, Guthrie has a talent for giving clear, concise, and useful answers to questions. I'm sure he gives great clinics. Paul Gilbert found out how difficult it can be to weave a coherent line through a challenging chord progression. Sometimes I wonder if things ever really got better than Charlie Christian and Django...

Its funny hearing Guthrie talk, its like his words constantly fail him when he tries to describe the thoughts in his head. Guthrie neeeds the guitar to express his thoughts. And LOL "and Paul Gilbert can play jazz now? lets all be very scared" haha... awesome guy

Good lad, get on the Opeth. Do you like the later albums only or have you been also dabbling with pre-Blackwater Park albums too? Although Still Life is a masterpiece and maybe their best of that era I think the aesthetic, heaviness and lyrics of My arms your hearse is truly unique and maybe my all time favorite.

literally had to pause it and tame my goosebumps when he mentioned AAL - that was exactly who i was thinking about in terms of brand new ground being broken TODAY.

Wow he just mentioned AAL, interesting! I want to hear his thoughts on Tommy Emmanuel, Scotty Anderson, Bireli Lagrene, Chet Atkins, all those monster players.. it must be very interesting to hear.

Get yourself out there man, go to gigs and introduce yourself. Start a KZbin page that you can tell people about and have them be impressed. My efforts on KZbin have opened so many doors for me in the local area and at college.

I think that's a pretty astute observation. I guess the think to take away is that at it's core the pursuit of music should be for the creation of music. But yeah, I can't even imagine the years Alan spent locked in a closet perfecting his playing.

One thing we can be sure of: Paul Gilbert is who he is because he did a lot of struggling. And maybe he's not struggling like a beginner would, but if he's been thinking in pentatonics and major scales his whole life, maybe he's fighting hard to gain a respectable level in another style.

dude Paul Gilbert is from GIT and he could play any style but he was from his era metal rock and that was his identity not becoz he cant play jazz or fusion.Guthrie is a different breed,he already presents himself not a s a shredder but more to fusion,blues n rock

Sorry if that came off as arrogant... I guess what I got from Guthrie's comment is... if you have talent, share it... you may be an inspiration to someone else... If you don't want to share... that's cool too. Seems to be an old question... if no one sees it (or hears it)... is it art or is it exercise?
@czzham12 жыл бұрын
Guthrie reminds me of, like, an English David Torn (no musical comparison intended) 40 years after David's Ithaca years. No offense intended: I fully appreciate each in their own. Peace

Its funny a couple years ago I seen an interview with Misha Mansoor of Periphery talking about Guthrie, he said hes a "freak of nature'. Now Guthrie acknowledges Animals As Leaders as the modern meat, and the wheel keeps turning.
@NeoGodHand12 жыл бұрын
Guthrie seems to acknowledge all the bedroom player's willingness to get good, though he only wishes they'd put their hard work into actually initiating, creating and playing music rather than hone skills and play along in a metaphorical silence to their favorite tracks. The interviewer seems to chastise them for what they do and how they practice, then belittles them for not comparing to Holdsworth, essentially saying they haven't put a dent in skill and never will. Perspective.
