“I just grew up with it. Music and guitar feels like a first language to me” Very nicely put. Thank you Guthrie! Now I know what to tell people wondering how guitar and music comes natural to me.

I think it's a case of, interviewer asks a question in Spanish, then in English and they edit the English question out before Guthrie replies.

@@JohnLloydDavis Agreed. He was an English major in college. Most Europeans know 2 or 3 languages, not sure if it's the same in Britain. Heck, there must be a dozen different dialects of English in Britain, just understanding all the people there alone must take some brain power...lol

: / AS A "NATURAL MUSICIAN, GUITARIST AND MULTI INSTRUMENTALIST MYSELF GUTHRIE, I DISAGREE WITH YOU ABOUT YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON "MUSIC THEORY" VERSES BEING "SELF TAUGHT". MUSIC IS A GIFT. ITS A GIFT FOR THOSE WHO HEAR IT AND ENJOY IT, AND FOR WHOM IT TOUCHES DEEPLY, BUT IT IS ALSO A GIFT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO CAN MAKE IT! MUSIC IS REALLY ALL ABOUT THE FEELINGS ONE HAS INSIDE OF THEM. IT IS AN EXPRESSION MUSICALLY THROUGH A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. YOU CANT TEACH THAT. YOU CAN TEACH TECHNIQUE, BUT THE NATURAL MUSICIANS KNOW AS YOU DID SAY HERE, WHAT WORKS, WHAT GOES WITH WHAT, AND WHAT SOUNDS GOOD OR NOT. THERE IS NOT ROAD MAP. IT IS INHERENT FOR THE NATURAL MUSICIAN. BEING TAUGHT SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS ON ANY INSTRUMENT AND BEING TAUGHT THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO "SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC" THROUGH THEORY, CHORDS, SCALES, MODES, AND PATTERNS? IS COMPLETELY UNTRUE. THE FACT IS, "FORMAL MUSIC LANGUAGE" "THEORY" WAS ONLY CREATED BY THE PEOPLE WHO DID HAVE THE NATURAL GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING MUSIC AND MAKING IT! SO THEY TRIED TO CREATE AN ALPHABET AND A DICTIONARY FOR ALL THE "WORDS" WITHIN ITS LANGUAGE! WHEN THE FACT IS, YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH CREATIVITY OR SOMEONES EMOTIONS EXPRESSED MUSICALLY THROUGH A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. NOTHING LIKE YOUR METAPHOR OF KNOWING THE ALPHABET BUT NOT BEING A WRITER, OR WANTING TO BE A WRITER WITHOUT KNOWING THE ALPHABET! THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS, CONCEPTS AND LANGUAGES. THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC IS SOUND! IT IS EMOTION. IT IS NOT INTELLECTUAL AND THERE ARE NO RULES! ITS SELF EXPRESSION! I THINK IT TIME TO MAKE THIS CLEAR TO EVERYONE AND STOP SUPPORTING THE MONETIZATION OF MUSIC, AND OF THE LIE THAT ANYONE CAN BE A MUSICIAN AND MAKE MUSIC! YES, YOU CAN LEARN TO READ THE MUSIC NOTES AND PLAY THOSE NOTES AND MAKE THE MUSIC OF THOSE NOTES.. BUT THE MUSIC WILL BE STERILE BECAUSE ITS NOT COMING FROM INSIDE YOUR HEART, BUT ITS COMING FROM YOUR HEAD.. YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME, AND FOLLOW THE ROAD MAPS .. NOT JUST FEEL IT AND EXPRESS THOSE FEELINGS......

I think music is a language. Theory is like grammar... you dont "need" to study grammar but its very useful for teaching and learning. I think it would depend on the person... using grammar creatively can lead to new ideas in literature and writing, and theory in music is the same... but in order to speak or use a language properly, you need to be able to put grammar in the background and just speak, same with theory

@@gypsyfromthesatelliteoflov5425 That is not how it works with music. words, and written language yes. But music is all about SOUNDS. its like body language. its inherent, natural, individual, expressive physically. But music is expressed sonically, audibly. Using grammer takes thought, it takes intellect. Music is not intellectual. Music theory is the attempt, the commercial attempt, at trying to make music intellectual. Another example of this is all the "professionally trained" musicians? they all need sheet music to play any music! Without their sheet music? THEY ARE LOST! because they dont depend on their ears to play music, they depend on their minds, their thought process, their intellect!!!!! I play all instruments with my eyes closed! I use only my ears and my feelings to express myself musically. Just as all the greats did! IF you go back to the roots of all music? There is no dictionary! there is no format! there is explanation except for how those individuals approached their instruments and created music. Music Vocabulary was actually invented by someone in the 15th century who was in awe of the naturally gifted classical musicians who just created their concertos and symphonies themselves by ear! It was an attempt to one, allow anyone the ability to play or make music! and two, to sell the music after it was written down. and that is what it still is! Yes, anyone can learn theory! the notes, chords, scales, modes, and theoretical applications of all those things! BUT THEY WILL HAVE TO CONSTANTLY REFER TO THEIR DICTIONARIES AND WRITTEN MUSIC TO PLAY THAT MUSIC! NO ONE LEARNS ALL OF THAT, AND THEN PLAYS ANY MUSIC JUST THROUGH THEIR EARS AND EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION! THEY CANNOT! WHY NOT? BECAUSE THAT IS NOT HOW MUSIC IS EXPRESSED! If you are trained in theory? I want you to sit down with your instrument, and close your eyes, and purposely try not think about where your fingers are, anywhere on your instrument, and instead just try to focus on the sounds, and what your feelings are guiding you to play. Im certain you will not be able to do any of that! Why not? BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN INTELLECTUALLY TRAINED TO PROCESS MUSIC THROUGH REASON AND DIRECTION, AND THOUGHT! ( i teach music too by the way ) The truth is, music and the abilities to create it are a GOD GIVEN GIFT THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS. for those who dont? They can enjoy listening to music and all the benefits of how it positively affects them when they hear it. But those who have the gift of making music, we can enjoy listening to music too, but not exactly the same ways as only the listeners can. And that should be ok! BECAUSE ALL OF US HAVE SPECIAL AND UNIQUE SKILLS, TALENTS, AND ABILITIES! WE DONT ALL HAVE THE SAME GIFTS TO SHARE WITH THE WORLD! THERE ARE PAINTERS, CARPENTERS, ELECTRICIANS, INVENTORS, ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC.. AGAIN, YES, ANYONE CAN LEARN THE COMMERCIAL LANGUAGE OF MUSIC. BUT THEN THEY ARE LIMITED TO JUST BUYING THIER FAVORITE MUSIC ON SHEET MUSIC AND PLAYING IT BY READING THE NOTES! BUT THEY CANNOT PLAY ANY MUSIC WITHOUT READING IT AND BEING DIRECTED INTELLECTUALLY! AND THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE........ GOT IT?

@@rockybalboa2526 i think guthrie is an example of someone who can use theory to explain what he is doing but at the same time be free enough to close his eyes and play. Lots of musicians have done this: pat metheny, greg howe, matteo mancuso, brett garsed, allan holdsworth, frank gambale etc. What are languages anyway? They are the use of sound to communicate thoughts and emotions. If you listened to filipino, without any knowledge of its grammar or any experience of it first hand, it might as well be music. You can learn filipino, or music, in two ways: speak/play it with the native speakers, preferably when you are young, or learn it formally with grammar. Tho experience with a language takes primacy, you can do both and so long as you are aiming to communicate with the language, both grammar and experience will serve you well. Same with music.... it would be folly to assume that only experience is useful, tho it takes primacy. As human endeavors can be both emotional and intellectual, so can music be theoretical and experiential at the same time

@@gypsyfromthesatelliteoflov5425 LISTEN, I AM NOT GOING TO KEEP DEBATING FACTS WITH YOU. THINK AND BELIEVE WHATEVER YOU WANT. IN THIS INTERVIEW GUTHRIE ADMITS THAT HE TAUGHT HIMSELF TO PLAY GUITAR BECAUSE HE HAD A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC AND HOW TO EXPRESS HIMSELF THROUGH HIS GUITAR! THAT IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING! MUSIC HAS BECOME LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE " A BIG BUISSNESS" AND THAT IS ALL "THEORY" IS ABOUT! ITS A WAY TO MONETIZE THE LIE OF "TEACHING ANYONE HOW TO MAKE MUSIC" .. ITS BULLSHIT AND ITS JUST NOT TRUE! IT DOESNT WORK THAT WAY! AS WITH EVERYTHING ELSE. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE GIFT TO DO THINGS AND WHATEVER THOSE THINGS ARE? COME NATURALLY TO THOSE PEOPLE. AND TO OTHER PEOPLE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT COME NATURALLY TO THEM! YES, YOU CAN TRY TO TEACH ANYTHING TO OTHER PEOPLE! BUT YOU PUT A PERSON WHO CAN NATURALLY CREATE BEAUTIFUL PAINTINGS? NEXT TO SOMEONE WHO WENT TO SCHOOL FOR YEARS TO LEARN HOW TO PAINT??? YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PAINTINGS VERY QUICKLY! THAT IS THE POINT HERE! MUSIC IS A GIFT! YOU CANNOT JUST TEACH THAT GIFT TO ANYONE! WAKE UP! AND INSTEAD OF WASTING YOUR TIME AND MINE WITH THIS NONSENSE? WHY DONT YOU FIND YOUR OWN GIFT? AND START WORKING WITH THAT TO MAKE SOMETHING GREAT HAPPEN FOR YOURSELF! ~ BYE!
