Really love this video. No bias crap whatsoever. We have both. A 7.3 in an F-250 and a 12 valve in a Crew Cab F-250 and we love both. Most of my friends that have the Cummins love the engine but the rest of their truck have fallen apart, so your video is pretty spot on.

I have one of each. I like them both. They are both different. The 12 valve has much more power potential as can be cheaper to an extent. The navistar will cost more to get more power. In stock form the navistar pulls as hard as the 12 valve. They both have shortfalls. The Cummins has the dowel pin issue in the timing case. The navistar has the oil cooler issue.it also can have cavitation in the coolant passages of the block. Both are a pain to fix.

Also in later 7.3's (2001.5 I believe they switched), the PMR's instead of Forged Rods. Meaning you can really only push 450hp, before your rods decide to take a trip to the moon. Forged Rods you could push 500-600hp safely.

I've had my 96 Dodge with a manual 5 speed since 99 it's still a good running truck I had to put a track bar in mine to eliminate the death wobble. And I had to replace the driver's door. And I put a straight pipe on it a few years ago and the fuel was turned up on it which in turn make the clutch slip so I had to have that replaced. The only thing I've done to the engine is get the killer dowel pins issue fixed. And just regular maintenance but this truck pulls all my heavy loads like my bulldozer my back hoe etc. And all my friends that had their 7.3s got rid of theirs years ago and I'm still driving my Dodge. I don't know any details on why they don't have their Fords anymore I just know I'm still driving my Dodge!

my dream truck is a 99-03 7.3l powerstroke full 4dr(supercrew cab)4x4 dually but 12v will always win when itcomes to maintanence 12v is mechanical injection vs 7.3 which is oil/electronic injection 12v is an inline six making it easy to servive valves springs rocker arms etc 7.3 is v8 and multiple things have to come off to service things 7.3 has a better turbo but 12v has better flow and access if you ask my opinion base your purchase on what your skillset is or how big your wallet is if you got the money buy whatever if you have limited mechanichal skills get a 12v

I'm a ford guy so I always make the joke that the 12v is so reliable cuz they don't make enough power to hurt themselves but I have much respect for them. Ford truck itself is better than the dodge. better trans. I would prefer a 7.3 because they make better power stock than the 12v and I have more experience with them. everyone loves a 12v for a swap simply because they are mechanical and simple and I don't blame them. both really good engines.
@nathan1sixteen
@nathan1sixteen 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, you're not wrong. The engine was designed for off-road applications, to be used in the crappiest of conditions. It doesn't make crazy power stock, and is insanely heavy for the size. But, that also means you can build the crap out of them and they don't flinch.

You must not ever be around a Cummins then. You can take a Cummins truck and abuse it, pull, heavy loads, and not change the oil for 30K miles at a time and they’ll still hit a minimum of 400K miles. I hotshot all over the country and drive nothing but Dodges. How many 7.3 trucks you still see pulling loads coast to coast? I don’t see many at all, if any. You still see people working 2nd gen and 3rd gen Dodges regularly. 7.3 isn’t a bad motor but when it breaks down on the side of the road there’s not a whole lot you can do besides call a tow truck. You could pull the head of a 12V on the side of the road if you wanted to. I’ve tried working with 7.3 trucks. There’s just too many nitpicky, stupid problems with them. Cam sensors that constantly go bad, fuel filter bowls that crack and fill the valley of the motor with diesel fuel causing just a continuous stream of fuel leaking, glow plug issues that once bad enough the truck won’t even crank in 60 degree weather without plugging it in. It’s not worth the headache.

People also beat the hell out of the cummins trucks and not so much with the old 7.3's thats why the tranny goes out. The stock dodge trans is fine I own two early third gen rams and one is a 2003 and has 199,000 miles and the other is a 2004 cummins with 374,000 miles and they are both on the stock tranys and I've owned them both since new so to say the trans is bad isn't fair when the bottom end of the 5.9 can take 1,000hp before you really need to upgrade any bottom end parts. Idk any other engine that can take that on a daily basis. So there are a ton of people putting basic tuners and junk on the ram truck and smoking the trans. Those stock tuners are junk they just smash line pressure through the roof and have basic tunes that are not healthy for the trucks at all. A tuner is to compliment power upgrades like a built trans and bigger injectors and turbo and etc.. you don't put a tuner on a stock truck its stupid :) I had several 7.3 truck back in the day and they were good trucks but the 7.3 needs upgrades to really get out of its own way. And it has tons of flaws as well. Where as the 5.9 engine itself is an amazing thing . Thats why the 5.9 is in all sorts of stuff from marine applications to heavy equipment and more. They are everywhere :) I love my obs ford's but there's a reason they aren't the top pick for juicing them up and racing them or doing pulls. Ford kicked themselves hard im sure when they got away from the 7.3. I had both versions I had a 89 naturally aspirated 7.3 regular cab long bed and a 94 extended cab long bed turbo 7.3 along with some other early 90s turboed 7.3's good trucks just not comparable to the 5.9's both trucks rott like there is no tomorrow if not handled properly.
