I own a 97 12 valve single cab long bed 4x4 5 speed. I believe it is the absolute best 90’s diesel to own. I owned a 96 f350 single cab dually with the 7.3 in it. I had absolutely no luck with it. It was a sub 120k miles truck all stock grandpa owned. My biggest issue I had was with the injector circuits being in the valve cover gaskets, my passenger side bank gasket was cracked and the power feed crossed with the power return, fried my injectors, And idm. After I got all of that taken care of anytime I was driving in a field at slow speeds the engine would cut out and run terrible, sometimes I would loose one bank of the engine. Turns out after hours of diagnostic time. It also fried the pigtails that plug into the valve cover gaskets. Aside from that and about 5 cam position sensors. I sold it and bought a 24 valve. After my handful of issues with it. I bought a unmolested 97 12 valve with 90k miles. And it’s has been an amazing piece of equipment with no complaints! I agree. But the Cummins would’ve still won those certain topics and the Powerstroke would’ve won the other. The 99-early 2000s Ford F-250s were my favorite looking trucks, and interior. Still, the Cummins is such a beast engine. I’m not a big fan of the 7.3’s.

I have to say you have given a very fair representation of the gen 2 Cummins powered trucks. I have a 2000 2500 HD 6speed that I bought in 2002. It has about 205k on it now and is a daily driver. The dash went to hell and I put a dash topper on it. Hard to tell it even there. Rebuilt the front end when it got too loose to pull a trailer safely. All new tie rods ends, track bar and ball joints. Also added the stearing box bar with the bearing and it helped a ton. Transmission and transfer case have both been rebuilt and brought up to 2003 specs. 400hp clutch and HD pressure plate. Rails were recently ran and new 2003 spec 275hp injectors with new injector tubes installed. After the 2nd injector pump failure, an AirDog Raptor was installed on the frame rail. She runs like a raped ape! Currently saving up for a nice paint job and new Mickey Thompson III wheels, lol 😎✌️

I own a CCLB 95 SRW F-350, automatic. I can vouch for the fact that they are difficult to work on, at least in the aspect that certain spots are hard to reach. I will say when I got my truck it was abused. The fuel bowl and lack of maintenance was awful. Every chance I get I fix what starts to be a problem. It’s definitely a commitment to maintain such an old truck, but I think that’s what it’s really all about. If you love it, keep it moving. Also, a stock 7.3 is a slug, but with the right tuner and some simple mods it will gain you the comfortable power you need and even contribute to your automatic transmission shifting smoother.

Great content. 👍🏻 The diesel that peaked my interest was a 1990’s Ram 250 4x4 that a good friend of mine had. What an awesome truck! I couldn’t find a truck like that and ended up purchasing a 96 F350 4x4. My most favorite truck to date. I had the trans rebuilt and put a complete Banks kit in it, Fantastic! Drove it like that for years averaging 24/25 mpg on 35’s with 4.10’s. The most fun truck and sneaky fast was a 97 F350 4x4 with a Banks intercooler, Beans Diesel D66 turbo, Adrenaline HPOP, Baby Swamps injectors, TS 5 position chip, MBRP exhaust and was also on 35’s with 4.10’s on a built transmission.
