When I was in the 8th grade I wore a Black Sabbath shirt to school and the principal tried to confiscate it and make me wear a shirt from the lost and found. I went along with it just to save myself trouble . After school I went to get it back and he told me I could get it back after the school year was over ! I was pissed so I went home and told my Dad , an old school WW2 sailor who had an open mind and liked a lot of rock music , although he preferred Chet Atkins above anyone else. He absolutely hit the roof when I told him I was made to change shirts and was mad as hell when I said they would not return my shirt that day. Next day he drove me to school and followed me into the building. I was a little concerned but I couldn't do much about it. I don't know exactly what he said to the principal but my shirt was at my house that evening and Dad said ' wear it to school tomorrow, nobody will be trying to tell you to change it ' . I did and he was right. Nothing was said about it. I wore rock shirts almost every day. Judas Priest, Sabbath , Iron Maiden, Motorhead , etc so it would have been a real pain in the ass to have metal shirts prohibited from school. After that day lots of my friends wore their concert T shirts and I think my Dad was the reason why they were allowed. Thanks Dad you were the best

It's refreshing to hear stories about conservatives being sane, rational and tolerant people. I KNOW they exist. I've spoken to a lot of them over the years, but these days their side of the media is dominated by crazy lunatics. @@AnonEyeMouse Yeah being conservative just means you want smaller government. State/local level solutions to issues and not federal solutions to issues. That's all a "Conservative" really is. The issue is that over years all these things become attributed to "Conservative" or "Liberal" and it's bunk. No such thing as "liberal music" or "Conservative music" music is music, it's universal. Right on! My parents were the same way. They didn't like the music, but they would let me listen to it. They would periodically ask me questions about it to see if it was affecting my mental state. Like asking if the music gave me violent thoughts or if I was getting into Satanism and stuff like that (because the Satanic Panic was still going then.) Which it didn't and which I wasn't into. I just loved the music. So they knew that it wasn't a problem. Years later, I began reflecting on a memory of my parents actually having to buy some of my CDs because of the Parental Advisory sticker. One album in particular stands out in my mind -- Cannibal Corpse's "Bloodthirst". Which had a pretty graphic cover. I was 12 when I got it. So I asked them years later why they let me listen to these albums and they basically just said: "Because it's not like it was changing your personality in any way. You weren't lashing out or anything." Plus my parents grew up listening to Sabbath and Zeppelin. So they kinda understood. I'm still a metalhead as well. 🤘🏽

A few montha ago, my mom told something amazing. She was curious about the Red Baron, so she did some reading up about him. And you know what she discovered? "The Red Baron" by Sabaton. She listened to it. And she LOVED it. I. Was. ECSTATIC!!!!!!! I *LOVE* Sabaton, and I'd been trying to get her to listen for a while. Like asking if the music gave me violent thoughts or if I was getting interested in Satanism and stuff like that (because the Satanic Panic was still going then.) Which it didn't and which I wasn't into. I just loved the aggression and the energy behind the music. I also grew up in the 80s and 90s, and I was the only one of my friends that listened to metal. I also listened to hip hop because it was always around, and honestly I liked it (still do). I remember a conversation we had when they asked me about metal and hard rock. I blew their minds when I told them that Boogie Down Productions sampled AC/DC and that Public Enemy sampled Slayer, lol.

Both my parents have been metalheads since the 80s. For my dad is was tough because his parents didn't approve his lifestyle. When he was a teenager his mom cut his hair by force and tore down the posters from his room. That same day my dad ran away from home. Shortly after he started working and he met my mom. I was born in 1992. In 1995, my parents brought me with them to the USA to start over. Having two metalhead parents is a blessing and has been so much fun. I grew up listening to Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, King Diamomd, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Sepultura, Anthrax, Napalm Death, Motley Crue, Scorpions, and many more thanks to my mom and dad. Now in 2023 we are still all metalheads and we still go to concerts as a family together with my little brother included.

Everyone always has an opinion about what others do. Growing up in the 80s and 90s it was music, today its video games. In the USA the same people saying we should ban music, art and games (let's call them the arts) are the same ones saying we are losing our freedoms. Now that I'm a parent, ive explained to my son that the arts are a way of a release from the pressures of day to day life but thats all they are. When I was growing up, I beat the shit out of a drumset. Later, I played some video games (think doom, not solitaire). Its a disconnect from reality. Try getting to know someone before you judge them.

I get it all the time from the various cult like 'tribes'. Those on the extreme left want to ban Eric Clapton & Phil Collins & now John Lydon. Those on the extreme right & neo-liberals want to ban bands who profess to be left wing such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The extreme feminists want to ban who they call misogynists & even all male bands or mixed sexed bands where the female member(s) aren't the lead singer such as New Order & Arcade Fire. The extreme Eurofanatics say that the British music scene is finished. The toxic positivity movement would hate most metal, indie rock, Roxy Music, the Clash and the Duke album by Genesis.

By the time I moved out of the house they both were into Iron Maiden and a few others. Mom had the hots for David Coverdale of Whitesnake! Dad was fascinated by the intelligence of Iron Maiden. I think the adults of today should consider these things with the youth out there right now. We were once the misunderstood fighting to tell our parents we had a voice even if we were young. we're now the oppressive adults telling kids 'you don't know, you're just a kid'. Maybe if we listen and face things with a sense of empathy and understanding we wont continue to breed the same issues into society that we've been battling for so long. the old ways aren't working anymore. lets tear them down and rebuild.

The statement that a fundamentalist Southern preacher wishes there was no Bill of Rights in America, that in Jesus' time there would have been no Bill of Rights, disturbs me far more than anything I've ever heard in any heavy metal song. This is exactly the type of demagogue clothed in the guise of religion that the Founding Fathers sought to protect the new nation against. In Jesus' time, King Herod had every first-born son under the age of two murdered just to protect his reign. This episode is called the Massacre of the Innocents. While this episode is likely the stuff of legend, this is the sort of America that the fundie freaks want to bring forth.

My parents hated the music I listened to, but they respected my choice to listen to that music. And they understood that music, regardless of the genre one prefers, is one of the great joys in life. Now, they weren't above poking fun and breaking my balls over the music I listened to. But by the same token I would break their balls and poke fun at my mom's love for Huey Lewis and my dad's love for country music. In the end it prevented me from taking things a little too seriously while still having a passion for the music. I remember one day asking my dad why he put up with my music and he just replied 'I think telling somebody that they can't listen to certain music is about as anti-American as it gets.' Right on, Dad. Right on.

Every time teens and young adults love something new that old generations doesn't understand, you have some people to call it "satanic", "bad", "dangerous" and whatnot. Rock n' roll, Heavy Metal, RPG, video-games, you name it! That doesn't mean that among those new trends there never questionable things (gods, there's humans involved, how could it be all good and perfect?), but generalizing from some bad apples and making up fake stories to scare people is really disgusting - and sadly very common.

0:16 Kid on the left seems to have an Alice Cooper T-shirt there. - I know it was more "shocking" back then, but Alice Cooper is literally one of the nicest guys. On the other hand there's MetallicA's '...And Justice for All', which... yea, is quite dark you really listen to it, but also really not the most offensive thing. Just because music and imagery sounds or looks aggressive, some people think it drives people to become bad. Yes, occasionally, particularly the mentally unstable, but not in general. - Then go listen to those lazy-ass rappers talking about gang-crap, shooting up people, selling/doing drugs, making money and showing off their bling to get bitches...

There are a number of studies that show Metal Fans are happier and less depressed than other people of their age group. Studies cited said that it was due to metal fans being more supportive of each other than other music fans. Also I think it's good that teenagers acknowledge and understand that there is pain, injustice, and suffering in the world. It allows them to build up resilience for the tough times that are going to come into their lives, and gives them a community to share that pain with. The most miserable people I have ever known are those who have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of happiness, and refused to acknowledged the suffering they go through.
