Man, I used to look up to this dude in high school. Legend. I stopped listening to anything after Ire but Winston has one of the best voices for the genre. 2:44 is some important advise. I always like to think I'm a pretty decent singer, and that I've been (slowly) getting better after all these years but I hardly ever listen to myself sing because the reality that I suck would just shatter my ego. But he's right; in order to improve you have to know your capabilities. Additionally, it's also important to know that you will probably never be able to sound like your favorite vocalists. They can influence your singing, but you have to have your own style with it.
@metalgirlxd60125 жыл бұрын
Please do tutorials Winston!!
@djabthrash5 жыл бұрын
Just follow what he said : put some loud music with screaming on and try to emulate it. Then start to sing on a PA or better : record yourself. Listen back, then adjust the way you sing, etc. It will take time and practice though. And also have a method and do warm-ups, breathing exercises (check out the Melissa Cross stuff for instance), stop when it's hurting, be patient, try to not overdo it, practice many styles of singing (clean, crunch, growl, medium scream, high pitch scream, rap, and try different ranges, etc).
@metalgirlxd60125 жыл бұрын
@@djabthrash I'm afraid of damaging my voice, it doesn't really hurt when I do it but it feels kina unnatural und sometimes my voice just stops during the scream/growl and all the tutorials are really hard to understand (English is not my native language) and explaint it very different and complicated
@djabthrash5 жыл бұрын
@@metalgirlxd6012 then i strongly suggest you to get the Melissa Cross "zen of screaming vol.1 dvd" to get the right approach to scream in a safe way. I think you're not using your diaphragm enough, which is supposed to protect you when you scream. Babies can scream for hours without damage, so for adults it's just a matter of finding the right technique.
@miked49045 жыл бұрын
@@djabthrash Yeah you just suggested a good way for them to mess up their vocal cords. If you remember what Winston said, "that research from year ten would have helped tremendously in Year 1". My suggestion, watch youtube videos. Understand what Singing from your Diaphragm is. Know that there is no tension/pain when we scream. If you feel something hurt, stop immediately and switch your tactic after your voice has rested. Also, own your voice, your voice won't sound like the man coming out of the speakers. You have your own range and if we try to push past our own range, it leads to more mess ups. Just like singing regularly.
@djabthrash5 жыл бұрын
@@miked4904 I told her "if it hurts, then stop" or something along these lines. I told her about the diaphragm thing already. And if you don't know how to pull off a scream, i'm pretty sure the best way to start is to blast some loud music and sing along, just like you would do in a concert. This is just to get you started if you have trouble getting started. Also, yes you have your own voice fo course, BUT by trying to emulate other sounds, that's how you find what your voice is capable of. If we just stuck to what we know our voice is capable of already, everybody would just stick to talking in their normal voice, and nobody would sing/scream/whatever. Videos on KZbin are fine, but just like mixing audio for instance, ou have to try it for yourself to get some real results. And i've yet to find KZbin videos that are better than the whole Melissa Cross DVD series that was released more than 10 years ago to be honest.

Well yeah...for their first 4 albums that WERE "metal core". But hopefully they get accepted into the metal based community after their last two albums (bar 2 or 3 songs that weren't that great). I don't think their metal core albums will be of any significance on a KZbin channel like Loudwire's. The fact they've ditched that style and gone more of a melodic/heavy-ish metal sound is a good move in my opinion. Hopefully long time metal heads can give them a chance. But I wouldn't dare suggest that Parkway Drive reign supreme to the classic metal bands.

One thing that I've learned as a vocalist and as time has progressed. The further the technique developes, the harder it gets to explain how's it done. I remembered back in the day (like in 2010 or 2011) that I could instantly explain my technique from the beginning to end and talk for hours on every little detail on how I did it. Nowdays I can only explain fragments of how I do it because the technique has changed over time due to experimentation and trial and error, and let's not forget that some information has been forgotten on the way. I usually think that the growls and screams becomes personalized as time passes. All of us usually starts at the same point and then goes in different directions. Like he mentioned, he did not have any information about it and only started researching 10 years later into his career. I think that the information on his basic fundamental of technique has been forgotten due to his vocals has advanced over the years.

The first time I ever heard parkway drive was bottom feeder and the way he yells it is so fucking brutal I love it.

I love this band. And I love that his love has been with hatebreed. Makes it so much more beautiful

I agree with the finding your own voice. As long as you can make the gritty sound and it doesn't hurt, then focus on what you can do. I too have been disappointed that I don't sound like what I expect, so I have to change my style a bit so that it fits my voice. I kept trying to be brvtal and go super low, but after not sounding as monstrous as I had hoped, I switched to bit more aggressive of a mid to low range growl instead. Ever since I've had that revelation, I've been more content as my vocal style is definitely less heavy more aggressive if that makes sense. Edit: I have a really shiity practice vid uploaded on my page if you want to see lol it was the first practice we tried playing an original and we had played it pretty good a couple times, just not on camera lmao

My first time trying to scream and it paid off in the end, was listening to PWD Sleepwalker. No jokes either

This is so relatable, mine was in the car too, but i think it was with Deftones or Slipknot, cant remember. I still need to learn how to scream better. I wish i could afford lessons.
