When I was a kid in the 70s/80s my dad loved Iron Maiden, the local music store had their entire front window painted to look like the Killers album cover when that came out then did it again for Number Of The Beast, my dad bought them both and I got into them, even jumped around with cardboard cutout guitars to classic metal and NWOBHM. I got a real Fender Strat for Festivus in 1981 when I was 11 but I really sucked, Festivus 1983 I started taking drum lessons thanks to Dave Lombardo's thunderous double bass drums Slayer's Show No Mercy. I got my first drum kit for my birthday in March of 1984 and also got some LPs and cassettes including Piece Of Mind, the first thing I did after setting it all up and hearing the entire album was try to learn that opening to Where Eagles Dare. I played along to that album so many times learning by ear but still cannot play most Maiden songs with just one bass pedal. I honestly didn't know Nicko used one bass pedal until Powerslave came out.

Yeah, early 80s metal scene was amazing, you really had to be there, my dad took me to see Raven in Portland in August 1983 and Metallica was the opener, I was 13 and was hooked on thrash ever since, I did love hardcore punk too, he took me to see Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics in Seattle in 1981, the first time I ever saw a real moshpit. And DOA drummer Chuck Biscuits gave me my very first drum lesson. Show No Mercy was the very first album I ever bought and got Kill 'Em All on Cardboard Box Appreciation Day with Festivus money that went to LPs, cassettes and comic books. The Beatles Museum in Vancouver was where I got both of them, it was also a comic book store, one of those dingy places in a basement that also sold live bootlegs and weed on the side. My dad grew his weed plants for him so I got a discount.
