It’s so nice to watch a tutorial with purpose. Not just a generic object for the sake of a tutorial but a clear guide from first thought to a final product in hand and usable. THIS IS THE WAY TO TEACH AND LEARN.

Kevin, thanks for taking the time to go through the design process so that someone who knows very little about parametric drawing and nothing about FreeCAD can get all of the concepts. You did a very good job and explaining each step and why you chose a particular order of operations.

Just wanted to add that the fillet at the base of the standoff also adds strength. Sharp iside corners tend to concentrate stresses at the apex. The fillet makes that less of a problem. Great video again. 73

Good job on the knob. A couple of things: 1- leave the dimensions slightly big and use a grub/set screw. Some of the shafts have wide tolerances. B-- make a round hole in the D section about 2mm or so to slide a bit lower on the shaft; it is a compulsive thing. And finally 4) a quick way to rename things (I just discovered) is in the property view, Data tab, Base section, called Label. Click in the box and type the new name. If you look at 6:21 just before you rename the part, you can see the Base section with Label | Pad below it. If you are just doing a couple of renames - not that big of a deal. Rename the bends in the Sheet Metal workbench saves dozens of right clicks and the missed menu item getting transform instead. Missing F2 brings up help F1 or sleep F3. Good to see you back to normalish. 73 N9XYP

That does look easy! Most of it looks like Fusion 360. (that's what I wrestle with at work) My main problem is that I use it so infrequently, I have to re-learn it every time I crack it open. Gonna use more sketches. I would have done everything in one sketch. Your technique looks much easier.

Perfect. Onte note: you don´t have to select all edges to make the fillets. Select two, do it and them polar pattern it.

I try to limit the number of operations in the model tree. It makes navigation easier if I have to revisit the model in the future.

Hi Kevin, good to see you looking better, hope it is not just visual! Would it be possible to "name" the control? Obviously it would have to be set into the knob as the "bump" would muck up the print process. I have no experience of 3D printing (I struggle enough with palin paper!), but I am concerned that the letters would not be clear, also would it be possible to infill the letters with a second colour, (sorry about the spelling, but I am a dyslexic Brit!). 73 Jim M7BXT.
@loughkb3 ай бұрын
Yes, it's easy to emboss or engrave lettering. If you look at the shelf behind me, you'll see my callsign in a two color print. You can add a color change at a certain layer and the printer will pause for you to unload and reload a different filament to change colors. There are also automatic color change systems now called Multi Material Units or MMU's.

Kevin i really like you videos. I lose my tree in Freecad and have a terrible time getting it back. Have you tried the fork called Ondsel? Thanks for all you do. Ot is great to see you doong better.

I think you mean the model view? Go to the view menu, down to panels and select model. I have tried Ondsel. I lost work due to it crashing a few times. Haven't had a crash in FreeCAD yet.

Thank you I have been very frustrated by CAD for a very long time. One question can you import a STL file and then edit it in free CAD?
@loughkb3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can. There's a couple of extra steps. You see, an STL file is a mesh. It's made up of triangles. Free CAD works with solids. There's a few videos out there on how to do it, just search for STL and freecad. Essentially you bring it in, then you convert it to an object, you make a copy refining it, and then you convert it to a solid. Then you can edit it.

Thank you sir.

Make sure you have one of the recent releases. At least 0.22. or follow the link on their website for the release candidate and get 1.0 RC2 or later. Don't try to start with 0.21, it doesn't do the auto constraints by default and can be confusing. I think you can set auto constraints, but I'm not sure. I started with version 0.22. now I'm running 1.0 release candidate 2

Hi Kevin, Thanks for that short tutorial on FreeCad. I noticed you're now using a Prusa MK4S printer. How do you like it and are you using it in 12VDC? Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
@loughkb3 ай бұрын
I love it. It's extremely accurate dimensionally, very fast, and so far very reliable. More like an appliance, I don't have to tweak it, I can just say print and walk away and know that it will succeed. It's DC voltage is 24 volts. So the power supply project is going to be a bit more involved. I've been gathering parts for it. The big one being a 12 to 24 volt 350 watt DC to DC converter module. Which was surprisingly affordable. I also need to duplicate some circuitry from the original power supply. The Prusa has a feature called power panic where it will sense a loss of power and quickly write some resume data to non-volatile memory. So if you kicked the power cord out, as long as you plug it back in within a couple of minutes, it will simply resume printing. Pretty cool, but there's some circuitry to make for the power loss sense. Anyway, it's a beautiful machine.

I just downloaded the latest and mine looks pretty different with some stuff. I can't specify the circle by typing, there is no input box and pressing tab doesn't do anything to let me type the 28mm in. Also I noticed that the wording is off on the circle type but I assume the default sketch circle is probably correct. Also when I go to extrude (or pad) the circle it's hollow and I just have the outside perimeter of the thing and its hollow in the middle. Just some thoughts so far in case someone is trying to use this on windows and with a later version.
@loughkb3 ай бұрын
What is the version number? It sounds like you have a really old version. Constraints prompts when drawing have been there with auto constraints since version 0.21 I think. I'm using 1.0 RC2 in this video, but the feature set is the same as version 0.22 Also, what you describe as padding being hollow doesn't make sense. Were you in the part design workbench?
@rrittenhouse3 ай бұрын
@@loughkb Version 0.21.2 - I was in sketch to make the sketch then back to part design to do the padding. I'm used to Fusion but I thought i'd give it a shot and see how this went lol.
@loughkb3 ай бұрын
Well you're on an old and buggy version. So don't judge based on that experience. Get a more recent version.

@@loughkb I grabbed the latest RC of 1.0 and all is well! I just didn't want whoever you were referencing in the video to help run into the same weird issues that I did.
