I am at the end of my life, 68 years old and in hospice...dying with leukemia. I remember owning my first JONI MITCHELL album with clouds and Michael from mountains, Nathan la frenier, etc.... it changed my life and initiated my music career. I have lived lifetimes since then and changed careers several times. Now, resting on my couch, I listen to this old concert and remember how I felt when I was 13 years old and just hearing these songs for the very first time. at the time she was the older wiser woman whom I wanted to emulate.... now, watching this, she is dewy youth and I the rusk, ready to blow away on the wind with a song in my heart ❤

I'm an old geezer who was a grownup when this show was made. Back in those days, Joni held her audience spellbound with just a guitar, a piano and her wonderfully imperfect voice. No sexy outfit, no dancing, no big production, no plastecine music. Just pure, sincere artistic expression in timeless songs that still resonate with those who appreciate them. With the passing of Gordon Lightfoot, she's among the last survivors from a generation of great balladeers.

Add Brian Wilson as an artist that stands shoulder to shoulder with Joni Mitchell as a writer, player, singer, and arranger. Wilson personally challenged the Beatles for pop supremacy at the height of Beatlemania. He won a measure of success at that when "I Get Around" went to No. 1. Beach Boys released four studio LPs in 1964 thereby exemplifying American work ethic and competitive spirit.

Peter Gabriel Secret World concert is up there with this, but he had a supporting cast of profoundly talented musicians to help him with his vision and performance. This Joni Mitchell show is just simple and raw, with no million dollar production like the Gabriel concert. I believe she is the greatest songwriter ever, female or male. Dylan was great, but most of the time he kept a cautious distance from real social issues. Joni transcends greatness. She is very direct in depicting society in everything good or bad about it. She does not just write poetry. She rights poetry that is astute social commentary, such as Woodstock, a song written almost as the events were unfolding. She is a militant poet in many ways.

Her guitar playing is underappreciated. Sure, she doesn't wail screaming blues guitar riffs. However, what she does is so complex and melodic, playing rhythm and melody at the same time with a sound that can only be Joni Mitchell. And the tone of that Martin guitar is excellent. Whenever I tell people that I think Joni Mitchell is one of the best guitar players of all time, I get a lot of heads shaking and comments like, "Well, you've never heard X or Y or Z"... all of whom are blues/rock lead guitarists. They are all excellent and can all play in each other's style. But none of them can play like Joni Mitchell.

There has always been such light in her music and art. A wondrous body of work. So many of us grew up entranced by that soaring voice. She helped me stay in touch with how beautiful life can be for 50 years now. Thanks for being so true to yourself Joni Mitchell.

God, I love Joni so much and have ever since I was a little toddler (born in 1970) and I grew up with "ladies of the canyon" and " court and spark" being a huge part of my life thanks to my mom playing them both what probably wasn't, but seems like daily. I knew every nuance of those songs probably by the time I was 6 years old. And of course, since then I've gone on to discover so much more about this incredible musician/ songwriters work. I have also been a musician and songwriter for the last 41 years although many leagues below Joni, one thing I wish is that she got more credit as a musician, even in the early days her sense of improvisation with her vocal melodies during her performances alone proves her genius with melody and it's hugely enjoyable and inspirational. Thanks for uploading this beautiful video.

Yes, her musicianship is impeccable. She's totally an inspiration to guitarists with her inventive tunings. And ... she's even better on piano! As a musician, she's a folkier version of Prince, who was obviously a fan - he covered "Case of You". And the lyrics. There's a reason why guys (such as Prince, CSNY and Adam Duritz) like to sing Joni songs. They have an honest directness to them that doesn't offend our fragile (?) sense of masculinity.

There are so many ways that Joni is talented: her music, her poetic lyrics, her voice, her musicianship, and even as a painter. She really had a string of amazing albums one after the other beginning in the late '60s.

Let’s be clear this lady is certainly one of if not the very finest songsmith ever to walk this planet! Over the years there have been many good/great performers but you will have to dig very deep to find another who is this naturally accomplished. The apparent ease with which she weaves complex melodies and lyrics is just breathtaking and yet so easy to listen to……and have you seen her painting?

Joanna Newsom is a master at it. Check her out. For simpler lyrics go with "It Does Not Suffice"... If you can dig super deep lyrics go with "Sawdust and Diamonds" or "Only Skin"... "Emily" is great too. Her two best albums, in my opinion, are Have One On Me & Ys. They're quite different.

Joni Mitchell stands among giants including Brian Wilson, Gladys Knight, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder. It is an embarrassment of riches. Kudos to her manager and label president David Geffen who essentially popularized California country rock.

I'm 71 yes, an American friend sent us the album when it came out. And I've sung it ever since. I love hearing you sing and especially talk, such a young voice, and you were so kind, maybe even a little bit shy, fragile, that's why they're beautiful songs. And you accompany yourself so well, beautifully done on that piano, something I've never managed to do.

Wow, it’s so rare to see an artist perform an unfinished song such as “All I Want” was at that time. That takes courage, because the song at that time was such a rough draft, compared to the beautifully refined version that it became. I’m also impressed that the overall audio quality was that good, given that it was 50+ years ago. Kudos to BBC.

Love hearing and seeing a few songs from the album "Blue," prior to the album coming out. I especially enjoy My Old Man at 16:36 and All I Want at 32:10 which has quite different lyrics and a few different chords. Fascinating to see the development of that song and that she's vulnerable enough to play songs that she hasn't quite finished yet. For Free 20:00 brought tears to my eyes as it often does.
