I've been playing drums more than 50 years. I love how Louis embraced his heroes and plays the way he wants. When I was a kid, everyone always tried to get me to stop playing so busy. He's like, "I'll do what I want. This is how I play."
@thefunkybeautiful
@thefunkybeautiful 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Imitate and break down what you like best, and develop into the drummer you want to be, not someone else's idea of a drummer. You never stop learning, that's the beauty of drumming. If every drummer stuck to rigid structure and the rule book, drumming would never have evolved as it has done.

@@troubleboy Yes but chick is a pianist who translates his piano skills to drums. I’m talking about drummers who take up piano. This has to be one of the best interviews with a musician EVER. It felt not only extremely educational, but someone’s brain with extremely valuable knowledge was picked at a very human level. Only 8 min into the episode and I already love it. Louis is able to give a fine balance between playing and talking, during the conversation. It's so interesting and fun hearing three detail-obsessed musicians talking about the real subtle stuff: micro-timing, little variations in grip of stick or pick, Louis's thing about sleeping with a metronome under his pillow 😂 And I'm sitting here pretty much unable to hear the timing differences in the samples they're talking about. They really are on another level, and I love the enthusiasm with which they geek out about it.

18:50 so glad that I wasn't the only one that spent lockdown doing this. I went as far as filming my picking in slow motion which was a whole rabbit hole to go down.
2 жыл бұрын
Lol, I didn’t exactly do it during the lockdown but it’s certainly a topic visited multiple times in my playing. I’ve kind of switched from a more anchored to floating picking hand technique, but every time I visit “how to hold the pick” the result is always “how most guitarists seem to hold their pick does not work AT ALL for me”. I don’t know if it’s true but many seem to hold the pick against like the first or second joint of their index finger? (I hold it against the fingertip more.) I just can’t do that. Maybe it has advantages, maybe not. Either way it’s way too late and not worth it to change at this point I feel. I do alter my grip when strumming compared to picking single notes too… but that’s something I’ve been doing for a long time too which I wasn’t even aware of doing until recently so can’t really tell if good or bad. 😅

@@TastyLaserCakes My own guess is simple wavelength - a lot of peeps are trained to accept certain formats and styles because that is all they know - when they hear something that breaks outside those safe boundaries they just don't know what to do with it. Musicians, because they delve deeper (and are, in theory, more creative), are more accustomed to looking beyond the norm and appreciate a vanguard with ingenuity when one breaks through the mundane. I think musicians might better appreciate the technical qualities too. And so we embrace Mr. Cole.

At 17:49 we are hearing about Jack DeJohnette ‘setting up his own grid’ and then ‘playing against himself’, but AFAIK this is actually the idea behind ragtime piano: The soloist sets up the groove with one hand and then plays against it with the other. Some less-informed people may demur and claim that ‘both hands are locked together’ or ‘on the same grid’ or whatever, and this SEEMS the case when you look at published sheet music of ragtime piano, but NOT when you hear AUDIO RECORDINGS (and also early pre 1917 or pre 1915 non arranged non human-quantized hand played piano rolls from 1903-1906 and 1912-1917) of great original pianists like Arthur Marshall, Charley Thompson, Blind Boone, James P Johnson, Fred Hylands, Clarence M Jones, Pete Wendling, Eubie Blake, Luckey Roberts, Ed M Pirsell, Fannie Woods Mansfield, Joseph Lamb, George Gershwin, Roy Bargy, Bertha Wolpa, Gertrude Baum, etc etc. They are almost always doing something with the time which is much more subtle than suggested in any published sheet music or in some of the quantized commercial piano rolls. There is really something special going on here and I have only ever heard a relatively few later generation (born 1911 and later) ragtime and early jazz pianists who are really able to produce some version of this effect. I think one reason is that relatively few ragtime pianists today are also drummers and listen to the rhythms with that level of fine detail. I should single out a few particularly funky pianists of the 1920s who really standout to me as being 25-50 years ahead of their time: Clarence Johnson, “Jim Clarke” (James Smith), Lemuel Fowler, Fred Longshaw, Cow Cow Davenport, and of course Jabo Williams (although technically I don’t think he got to record until 1932). I wish I could name more recorded pianists born pre 1880, particularly Black pianists (the vast majority I have named were born after 1880), but unfortunately due to racism and also the late advent of commercial recording technology (commercial recording didn’t get started until about 1889 and before 1902 it was a hellacious grind due to the artists having to perform the same tune over and over to make enough copies for sale, until better cylinder-reproducing methods were invented, and then of course discs won out; so the majority of the early extant records were performed by these long-suffering studio artists, since most famous musicians did not want anything to do with recordings until later, apart from a few one-off homemade records), very few Black pianists got to record or make rolls before 1921. After this time, things changed and we can hear more artists. Also, after the big 3 record companies’ lock on the industry was broken around that time (mid to late teens), many more smaller companies sprung up and recorded more people.

Does anyone know how to get a copy of the great duo gig with Louis Cole and Domi Degalle? It was a clinic-style small stage thing and the MC interviewed both performers. It was my fav but it disappeared from yt!

Great interview, especially about how one has to work with their own body. Not all of us are blessed with the ability to play exactly correctly for hours a day! So it’s inspiring to hear someone like Louis talk about working around his physical limitations.

I love the adjectives you guys use (soupy, organic) - I've been an amateur musician (and listener) for a while, and there were some musicians for whom I naturally went towards some kind of food-based description. E.g. whenever I l hear Paul Chambers (Miles bassist on Kind of Blue), I instantly felt his tone was 'edible' in some way and I couldn't justify why!

I discovered Louis Cole on my Facebook feed. It was his song “Bank Account” about 6 years ago. It was the funk in his sound that grabbed my attention. Then I searched him on KZbin and when I heard is music as a solo and as Knower, I’ve been a fan since!

Another Louis episode so soon?! 👏 Maybe sometime you can talk with him about his hilarious video aesthetic. Love what he said about figuring out the technique that fits your body. I was frustrated by teachers who were telling me to do things that just didn't work for my hands/fingers. Started getting tendonitis. I eventually figured out the way that worked for me.
