"Empathy can feel in short supply in today’s world, but the ability to place yourself in someone else’s shoes is an important skill when it comes to understanding others. If it isn’t something you possess in your toolkit, you might need a little help and film (and storytelling in general) is a great aid in eliciting such reactions. Les Chaussures de Louis (Louis’ Shoes) is a short looking to do just that, as it tells its story through the eyes of a young autistic boy in the hope of raising awareness and resonating with viewers.
Created at Ecole MoPA, by Jean-Géraud Blanc, Théo Jamin, Ka Yu Leung and Marion Philippe, the five-minute animation focuses on eight-and-a-half-year-old Louis on his first day at a new school. Asked to introduce himself to his new classmates, this is an important moment for the titular protagonist of Louis’ Shoes, as he wants them to understand his unique perspective of the world. Confused by the ritual of waving to say hello and with an aversion to eye contact, will his fellow pupils accept Louis for who he is? Or will they shun him and his blue, size 33 shoes?
Initially inspired by autistic philosophers, the quartet behind Louis’ Shoes recognised that for their film to be successful and genuine, pre-production was going to play an essential role and so they set out on what they describe as “a journey of interviews and research”. Basing their character and his experiences around the testimonials of people with autism, the team were able to create a sense of authenticity throughout their short and this, in turn, helps with the feeling of warmth and understanding that radiates from their story.
“Throughout the film, we thrive to create Louis’ particular way of seeing the world, which is at the same time a way of seeing ourselves, by walking, together, in his shoes”, the four co-directors explain. “The theme is specific but the struggle is universal. When the audience sees how Louis overcomes his difficulties with courage and sincerity, hopefully, it can resonate with people … even those without autism, to have the courage to accept and understand”.
Recognising CG animation as “the best tool” to do justice to the inspiring stories of their interviewees, Louis’ Shoes pairs its moving storyline with an affable aesthetic that welcomes its audience into Louis’ world. With the majority of the supporting characters framed so we never see their faces (until the very last scene), the team do a good job of inserting viewers in the gaze-avoiding point-of-view of their young protagonist. For some, this approach could have been limiting, but if anything it has forced this young team of animators to really push out their creativity and think of new ways of framing scenes. With so many shots from floor level or from Louis’ PoV, things could have got tiresome very quickly, but at just over five minutes in length, it never feels gimmicky or overstays its welcome.
Selected at festivals worldwide, Louis’ Shoes picked up the Gold medal in International Animation at the 2021 Student Academy Awards. As a parent of an autistic child this is accurate in so many ways- and not. Autistic kids share so many traits but - just like neurotypical people - are infinitely different. It's why it's so hard to diagnose and confounding for many neurotypical folks. This boy retreated at recess and the bell caused anxiety, yet my son is loud and loves sports, both unusual for kids on the spectrum. But that's why it's a spectrum. Wonderful animation and story.

this short tell us what autism is in different way, not so bold nor too lecturing us. It is touching me as an adult. I love the ending when other kids take off their shoes (well I asume they must be normal kids). It likes this short give us messege that normal people must treat autism in warm way, understand their unique perpective. I got the messege! THNAKS, love this master piece!!

Thank you for your message. I would just like to say that some autistic people, of which I am one, prefer it if you don't say "autistic people and normal people". Because we are normal too. Or in other words you're not normal either. Normality is difficult to define. Some of us are more confortable if you say "non autistic people" or "neurotypical people"

The ending scene makes me cry every time I watch. I'm not autistic, but I share a lot of the struggles that Louis has regarding necessity of routine, order, and simplicity. This is beautiful.

The number of times in a day my "blue shoes" are taken away and I melt down or shut down. But people don't understand that if I'm shouting or wringing my hands or crying or leaving a place or over apologising it's because my "blue shoes" have just disappeared. And I am thirty years old. "Blue shoes" disappearing can be many things. A word I expected you to say but you never did. A shop that was supposed to be open but that wasn't. An email that I receive and which means there's an extra task for me to do today. A sentence you say and that I don't understand. My favourite highlighter running out. The fact that tomorrow it's snowing and I can't go to work on my bike. The fact that the bus came at 13:37 instead of 13:31 or 13:39, so I don't know if it's the 13:31 that is late or the 13:39 that is early.

I am not autistic but i remember school ring became unbarable to me at some point, and maybe the last year i was in it i would cover up 2:48 same way each time it ringed, that sound was so loud, combine it with everyday stress from being at that place and crazy teachers..

Le spectre autistique, un vaste et complexe sujet puisqu'il y a toujours des interrogations à ce jour tellement les cas sont différents les uns des autres en fonction des gènes impliqués. C'est également un sujet qui me passionne. Votre court-métrage mériterait d'être proposé à l'Éducation Nationale pour être diffusé dans les écoles. I'm autistic as well. And I've been diagnosed since 2007. We often lose our possessions (like stuff that we'd played with something different) sometimes, but it is important to remember when we last lost, forgotten, or used them.

I don’t have autism, but I do have rather severe ADHD, and a little-known disorder that basically makes it so I don’t really understand body language and intentions very well. I didn’t have a single friend until 4th grade, which was fine with me. The only thing I really had a problem with was the way my teachers (once again, only up until fourth) treated me. My mom would always tell them, sometimes before the school year started, that I was different. After she did, they’d all treat me different, like I was, I don’t know, stupid or wrong or something. The funny part was, I never saw, still have never seen, my own ‘mental illness’ as a deficiency in myself. It merely makes me different. In my opinion, those differences are what make humans beautiful, from the color of our skin (a million shades, from dark to light, all so incredible and fantastic) to the way we act (my best friend had to turn all the lockers in our middle school to zero in one hallway before class started every day, I worked with a special needs boy who spoke mostly through sounds, but gave the best hugs ever.) That people think that different means broken is something about our society that sickens me. Someday, I hope people will move past the age-old tradition of hating and fearing what they don’t understand.

Il n'y a pas de sous titres portugais a ma connaissance. There are no Portuguese subtitles to my knowledge. Il y a un sous titre hongrois, donc je pense que tu peux tenter de les faire en portugais. There is a Hungarian subtitle, so I think you can try to do them in Portuguese.
