I was interested to see that in the last leg and a half (approximately ) the kiwis started flying a bit higher, and the Poms a bit lower. I guess the former, having accumulated such a lead, had a lot more to lose by a splashdown than the latter They could well afford to spend a small portion of that lead by sailing a bit more conservatively. In their place, I might also wonder if it would pay to heap further humiliation on a competitor who is justly famous for fighting back from a desperate position in the second half of regattas.

@Gottenhimfella3 ай бұрын
I agree, but was a little surprised that the commentators made no mention of how quickly GB fought back almost to parity in the early stages of leg 1. Admittedly they were being bounced rather than covered, but it didn't seem to me NZ were gaining in the tacks as they usually do, in fact I thought the opposite was the case. I suppose the two most likely explanations are minor fouling on the intersection of NZ's rudder blade with the rudder elevators (eg a small strand of weed which later washed off), or coincidental windshifts putting GB repeatedly in phase and catching NZ out of phase. And once this became apparent, it might have been risky for them to cross the course to get to those windshifts, given they'd need to cross back before long for the much preferable starboard tack layline.

I say "poor" because AFAIK there has never been an aggressive dial down in this class. As we saw today, the risk is very high indeed, because you necessarily have to be close to inflict a penalty, but at this proximity you cannot turn tightly enough to avoid a collision if the other boat has a handling problem and cannot give room in time. NZ boat is more manouverable and accelerates quicker and executed a planned move. Gutsy sailing.
@Gottenhimfella3 ай бұрын
@@enzeda That's hardly reassuring. For a dial down to be safe, it's not enough that one boat (which had previously set up for that "planned move" unknown to the other) is sufficiently manoeuvrable. TNZ were certainly not intending to "cross swords" as happened, and having watched every AC75 race in this and the last Cup, I cannot recall a single dial down. I am not arguing that the rules don't permit it (clearly they do) and I'm not arguing that they shouldn't, but I'm pretty sure if someone gets killed, there will be a massive s***fight, probably followed by a disproportionate rule change. 2013 AmCup, when "Bart" Simpson died, was a case in point of at least the first of these two outcomes. That was of course due to a structural failure (a misjudgement, I guess, but of a very different type)

As predicted, another win for NZ. 4 more to go. It's a shame that Prada lost with such poor team like Brittania :-(

Prada couldn't handle their boat. You need a good boat, a good skipper (x2) and to crew it well. They didn't.
