I was interested to see that in the last leg and a half (approximately ) the kiwis started flying a bit higher, and the Poms a bit lower. I guess the former, having accumulated such a lead, had a lot more to lose by a splashdown than the latter They could well afford to spend a small portion of that lead by sailing a bit more conservatively. In their place, I might also wonder if it would pay to heap further humiliation on a competitor who is justly famous for fighting back from a desperate position in the second half of regattas.

Its still tight. NZ boys are the best so far so good clean sheet.only nd to be push to fight more this is going to be close than it looks .kiwi s would want a better fight as well. Looks like the Brits go know answer just at the moment and think they are tired almost exhausted and they got to throw it all out on table no options. Left we have patience and strength still to run.

Poms gaining for most of the first leg, couldn't help wondering if the kiwi boat had picked up some weed. Usually the main gain to the Kiwis seems to be that they lose a lot less distance in their tacks, but in leg one, that didn't seem to help them

@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 3 ай бұрын
I agree, but was a little surprised that the commentators made no mention of how quickly GB fought back almost to parity in the early stages of leg 1. Admittedly they were being bounced rather than covered, but it didn't seem to me NZ were gaining in the tacks as they usually do, in fact I thought the opposite was the case. I suppose the two most likely explanations are minor fouling on the intersection of NZ's rudder blade with the rudder elevators (eg a small strand of weed which later washed off), or coincidental windshifts putting GB repeatedly in phase and catching NZ out of phase. And once this became apparent, it might have been risky for them to cross the course to get to those windshifts, given they'd need to cross back before long for the much preferable starboard tack layline.

@@GlennWhiteside Agreed in the general case, but in this particular case I doubt he'd practiced it much as the attacker, being on the port helm he'd have to practice the defence (and I'm sure he would not have incurred a penalty, unlike poor Dylan). I say "poor" because AFAIK there has never been an aggressive dial down in this class. As we saw today, the risk is very high indeed, because you necessarily have to be close to inflict a penalty, but at this proximity you cannot turn tightly enough to avoid a collision if the other boat has a handling problem and cannot give room in time. For one thing, they might not have the other foil down.

I still have my original pair I bought and always get them out for the cup. Reading the comments tells me their is just as many couch potatoes as their is for the rugby and the only true professional's are out on the feild/water doing their thing and bringing us lots of excitement and togetherness. Nothing but sport seems to be able to do that for us today, so let's just enjoy the moment and cheer on our boys. They make me proud to be a kiwi even if we have to have a commentator "dumb" it down for us. I also know that, no matter how knowledgeable you are, if you know, you know and you let the "dumb" slide by. Let's enjoy these beautiful boats and the effort that goes into them and the skill of these "yachtsmen". Bring it back home. Go Kiwis

So, if you race yachts (or merely cruise on a sailing boat), you will hear there's a right of way rule pertaining to yachts on starboard and yachts on port. GB were the give-way boat on port, NZ were the right-of-way boat on starboard, and were forced to gybe away to avoid a collision with GB, the give-way boat.

NZ boat is more manouverable and accelerates quicker and executed a planned move. Gutsy sailing.
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 3 ай бұрын
@@enzeda That's hardly reassuring. For a dial down to be safe, it's not enough that one boat (which had previously set up for that "planned move" unknown to the other) is sufficiently manoeuvrable. TNZ were certainly not intending to "cross swords" as happened, and having watched every AC75 race in this and the last Cup, I cannot recall a single dial down. I am not arguing that the rules don't permit it (clearly they do) and I'm not arguing that they shouldn't, but I'm pretty sure if someone gets killed, there will be a massive s***fight, probably followed by a disproportionate rule change. 2013 AmCup, when "Bart" Simpson died, was a case in point of at least the first of these two outcomes. That was of course due to a structural failure (a misjudgement, I guess, but of a very different type)
@enzeda
@enzeda 3 ай бұрын
@@Gottenhimfella Gosh no one wants a death or injury to any AC sailor. Most of us have absolute respect for all the AC sailors from all the teams that have competed in this AC. Ineos would not have received the penalty if they had the ability or foresight to manoeuvre more quickly. Aggressive starts will remain part of the AC but safety is still paramount

@@enzeda I agree, I called Ine0s a "canal barge" at the start. It doesn't seem as nimble as our boat. It looks quick in a straight line. But that sweet spot is on a narrow heading and isn't always the quickest TMG.
