Looks beautiful! Questions: 1. What brand of dye do you use? 2. When buffing, is there just a little polish remover on the cloth, it is it saturated? 3. If the bag gets wet, will the dye rub off? 4. Can I use a sealant/waterproofing spray to protect the finish? Thank you 😊

Hi Caroline, altho I'm not the original poster of the video, I have been Re-Fabbing Louis Vuitton for 5 years and since this video is over 2 years old I thought I'd help. 1- I personally use Fiebings Leather Dye. 2-When buffing, a clean soft cloth should be used. No acetone on it. I use acetone between the 1st and 2nd dye application. And sometimes after last coat. 3- If buffed until nothing comes off on cloth, it will not run 4-Yes, you can use a sealant such as Resolene or Leather Sheen both from Fiebings or Angelus makes an Acrylic Sealer. I personally do not seal my Louis Vuitton Vernis. I haven't found a sealant that I really like. Hope this helps you. Good luck!

@ThePurposefulCraftsDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sally thank you for checking the video, No I did not use a special dye only the Angelus brand I guess because the quality is great is why the outcome after buffing was nice. Oh one thing, the buffing part plays a big role for the shiny look, once all the excess dye has come off after buffing (takes time) then it will look shiny like that. I hope this helps you

Hi there, great video, I am planning to repurpose my old 50s style Kelly handbag which has dark brown patent leather look. I am planning to paint/ dye it primarily beige and do a painting on the bag itself. From what I saw in the video, you used acetone on a paper towel to prep it, Used leather paint on a dauber in circular motions , in two coats, then used a lint free cotton cloth with nail polish remover to finish off the bag? My question is would I be able to do this for my bag? I noted you used Angelus leather dye (not paint) so it doesn't crack. I've also noticed while looking into this that there is a product called Deco Art Patent Leather Paint, would I be better off using a dye after prepping then a patent paint for the picture i'd like to paint on the bag? How would you recommend I go about this. Would I need a gloss on the top after I'm done. I would really appreciate if you could advise me on this. Thanks!

@ThePurposefulCraftsDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hi Natalia thank you for checking it out, Angelus has plenty of leather paint you can choose colors of, but with Vernis I prefer to use leather dye than paint as the dye penetrates the coat and does not just sits on the top which is vulnerable to chipping. On the other hand, leather dye is limited to colors you can apply depending on the color of the Vernis too.

Interesting. You used leather dye over a plastic coating. Yes- It may be vachetta leather, but that super shine is created the same way they do patent leather. It is a plastic coating. I would have sanded the shiny plastic coating off first, so the dye could be absorbed (You can also use acetone or stripper- let it sit for about 10 minutes and wipe off). If you don't remove it, you might find the dye will wear off very quickly if you don't. But to each your own. If you are happy with the result, that is all that matters!
