Whilst it's true that Louis Wain suffered from mental illness in his old age, it's not true that his work deteriorated as the illness progressed. The schizophrenia myth began when an ambitious, young psychiatrist (Walter Maclay), found the eight “kaleidoscope cat” paintings in a junk shop in Notting Hill, London. Wain rarely dated his work, but Maclay decided that these cats were painted towards the end of Wain's life because they supported his own theories about schizophrenia. In truth, Wain like to experiment with different styles and much of his later work was of equally high standard as his earlier works. It's more likely he had Asperger's Syndrome rather than schizophrenia - which would explain a heightened sense of detail.

+crepuscularone That makes a lot of sense to me - seems once a label is applied it sticks even though it may not be correct. Maybe he just got bored and wanted to change up his styles?

+ReelNostalgia Wain's father was a textile salesman and his mother designed carpets and church fabrics. This probably influenced some of his work and Wain himself referred to some of his paintings as "wallpaper" cats. I just think it's tragic that these days most people associate his name with schizophrenia, rather than for being a talented artist who did much to promote animal welfare in Victorian, England.

Absolutely, just google "I am happy because everyone loves me" kitty drawing, many, including me, believe this was his way to thank fans for bailing him out of the notorious Bedlam hospital snd into much better institution. That picture has so much innocence, certain poignancy and overall its a beautiful drawing.

The man was possibly not schizo, there is not a shred of evidence of that. His abstract cubist-like work is product of highly creative brain mastering ordered and detailed structure. Mediocre doctor called his abstract (and highly valuable and intrinsically ordered artwork!), a product of "deteriorated" ming, an outrageous comment from a dr looking for prominence on the account of Louis!

The pictures were changed too quickly for proper appreciation, which was a shame. And the sound was way too portentous. Louis may have had a tragic life, but most of his work was intended to charm.

Where are the blue english speaking cats he promised us (movie reference if he never said that in real life), it's been over 100 years. Personally I'd prefer green cats but would take a english talking cat in any color.
