Versailles, 1649. A simple hunting lodge on the top of a windswept hill surrounded by forests and stinking marshland… This is the landscape where a child known as the “Rising Sun” used to come hunting with his father, Louis XIII.
Half a century later, it has become the most splendid royal palace in Europe, standing in the middle of gardens that provide a foretaste of heaven on earth. And in this gilded prison live the nobility, who are now entirely under Louis XIV’s control.

This is what I look for in a documentary - very interesing and well-narrated. I wish she could read to me all night - her voice is the female counterpart to Sir David Attenborough's, I catch myself leaning forward in anticipation of the next word. Thank you.

Spanish Royal Palace, accesible in Madrid center is bigger than Versailles and as notable, gardens included. For some reason it is mostly ignored

Oh, the Palacio Real in Madrid is famous ! Not ignored at all ! But the reason why Versailles is more famous than the others is because this palace started a completely new way of considering what a royal residence and a centre of power should be. It is quite obvious why the Palacio Real was ordered by Felipe V, Louis XIV's grandson.

Odd that the reason for Versailles isn't mentioned: He hated Paris because of memories of how he was treated there during the Fronde. I'd always read that Versailles, unlike British and other palaces, had no bathrooms. The place stank of shit and piss and B.O.

@@steveweinstein3222 In Versailles, there were two public lavatories, one in each aisle. As for the bathrooms, Louis XIV had a "pavillon des bains" but at this time (XVII° century), the habit was generally to have a bath in his own bedroom, in a tube brought for that purpose, then removed. Later on (XVIII° century), Louis XV had a bathroom built in his private appartement, that you can visit if ever you go to Versailles. Marie-Antoinette had hers on the ground floor. They were called "Cabinet des bains". Have a good day.

@@steveweinstein3222 I don't know what point you are referring to, since you spoke about many things, actually 🙂 As for me, I was just answering about your saying there were no bathroom in Versailles and told you there were some.

Sex ended the French monarchy, because kings were expected to be sexual machines, spreading their seed like giant sprinklers throughout their reign. This behavior included incredible luxury and expense that eventually ruined the economy and devastated the people. It also probably caused the legend of sexual licentiousness of Frenchmen ever since. The men were no different from the women, and the entire myth was nullified by the fact that every country in all parts of the world expected their monarchs to act the same. Only in modern times has the expectation of debauchery turned into it's present prudish form.
