After sorting out our mechanical issues, we headed into the mountains to finally begin our journey across Australia. The smooth gravel trails & peaceful camping spots we encountered made our ride towards Canberra and beyond, into the Riverina, a great experience!
We did learn one lesson the hard way though: always watch the weather in Down Under...!

As an Aussie, the key thing I learned living in the outback for many years, was that the passing of time is dictated by nature. I wish you a safe, and satisfying, onward roll to the Nullabor. That, for sure, is gonna be dry. Then again, maybe not? 😏

I wish you can highlight the names of the places you visit on the screen in your videos, so people like me can also visit those beautiful sites. Have a wonderful and safe adventure in this one of the most beautiful countries on the planet.

July is mid-winter Down Under. The southern states are usually pretty cold and often wet. The Hay Plain is flat, but I cycled it in the other direction (west to east) once. As we turned onto the road at dawn the wind hit us. We had a headwind the whole way without any respite. It took us something like 10+ hours to cycle the 100km and is one of the toughest things I've ever done on a bike. We had to keep going as we were staying in motels, didn't have a tent and there are no facilities on the Hay Plain at all. Don't know if you are tackling the Nullabor, but I believe there are prevailing winds, depending on which direction you are heading.

Yea, it's been pretty wet, but the temperatures have actually been alright so far. Yea, we're starting the Nullarbor soon, against the prevailing winds, and have already had a few days of strong headwind. But it should be fine, nothing we haven't done before... hopefully! 😅

They did the same route I did, Sydney to WA. The hay plains is beautiful. One morning I woke up and it was cold. No gloves, so I had to put a pair of socks over my hands.

Don’t feel too bad about not seeing a koala, I’ve lived in queensland coastal areas all my life and have maybe seen three koala’s in the wild in 50 years. Have a great trip hope you get some tail winds on those long flat roads.

I lived in Australia for ten years and before that cycled the Outback several times. I've seen a single very distant Koala once in all that time, and that was only by visiting a sanctuary where a large group typically hung out.

Agree that the smooth dirt roads, when not wet, are the way to go. Makes finding camping spots easy as you can camp in many places. The busy highways are not a fun experience. Hope you bike the Munda Biddi rather than just heading down the highway into Perth.

Yes, koalas .. some areas have lots, I used to see them crossing the road quite often in Port Macquarie NSW. If they are in an area of forest, you will most likely hear the males at night making this very loud roar/grunting sound, you can follow the sound and track them down. They can be very hard to see in the day as they sleep so much up in the high branches, you almost need to know it's there before you can see one.

Love seeing you cycle across our magnificent country and especially through the Riverina which is where I grew up on a 2000 acre farm. Have you googled what a koala sounds like? If not it might be worth doing it so you don’t freak out if you hear one while bush camping. Hope you have better luck on the Hay Plains, my car broke down twice when traveling through 20 years ago. Good luck on the Nullarbor and watch out for those road trains.

You should really ride around Australia not.just across the bottom. The north of Australia is the best part. When you get to Albany in WA look for. the Munda Biddi track which leads to Perth. One nice ride. Then from Perth head north to Broome and across to Darwin and Cairns..Then Down the east coast to Brisbane and Sydney.
@ChrisWhittenMusic

I have been watching your videos since some weeks ago and after having seen them all, I finally have catched you up. 😀 I am looking forward now to see new ones. You are a great and authentic couple and I admire your perseverance. It’s nice when you include maps in the editing, and the filming becomes nicer and nicer. But (in my opinion) they shouldn’t be too perfect, because then they will lose their charm of not being perfect. Life isn’t, so why videos? Thanks again and I wish you all the best for what’s left of the trip.💪🏻No guitar, but with a lot of good music! 🎶
