I've been wanting to make custom LED tail lights for our Honda Beat for so long and I'm glad we finally got around to finishing them. We went for a modern, VIP style tail light design and even made a new lens to complete the look!

Just a heads up for anyone wanting to do this, you gotta have white reverse lights. Other than that, great build and the final result looks great. Though id definately go with the second revision you mention in the video. I personally prefer seperate amber turn signals. The combo turn and brake lights add ambiguity to the system. Not to mention in europe you have to have amber turn signals anyway

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR! There's so many videos out there that talk about making custom taillights, but none of them ever outline the entire process start to finish. They're always either using premade parts, or only talk about the tech or removing/installing the lens. Truly incredible work, and I applaud you for showing and reflecting upon your mistakes. @@sean640 almost there. Decided to go with 3D printing instead as my other options just didn't accommodate my requirements and the design style I'm going for. Just ordered my 3D printer the other day, plus I also already got the LEDs I'll be testing to accommodate the changes, so the prototyping continues. Also worked on the code for the Arduino / ESP32 that'll add customization for "show mode", so I'm excited to report that progress is being made. I'll outsource the lazer cutting of acrylic sheets to a contact of mine once I've got the majority of the design done. Once the rear is done I'll rework the front as I went with 7" jeep lights and a single debadged grille for my Mk1 golf in the meantime

I used that oven trick to replace the lens on my car's headlights. I messed up when restoring them, and decided to just buy some aftermarket replacements. They were so cheap that I couldn't align them correctly. (The beam was too high) So I just swapped the new clear lens onto the original headlight assembly. Works perfectly, and the headlights looked brand new :D

I didn't know this car existed, thought it was a custom built CRX after seeing that clip in the beginning. Then I googled "Honda Beat" and saw what I'd never heard of before. Looks like an EG6/Del Sol hybrid. I own an 88' CRX Si with the JDM 90-91' tails and bumpers. :) Most of the mods are interior, like power windows, a really high quality carpet, custom floor mats with the red "CRX Si" stitching in the middle that looks stock, alarm, humble audio setup. The mod I'd love to do the most is retrofit some HID projectors in there like I did on my daily but I'd have to find a way to grind off enough of the fluting on the glass and polish so as to allow the beam pattern to come out as intended with that sharp, colorful cutoff like the Morimotos on my daily. I'll get to it sometime...

Thanks for making this video! Im going to start a similar project on my first car, with halo lights. It's a 2007 Seat Ibiza so halo lights keeps with infitting with the original round design of it. Im going to reuse the clear lense already on the housing and tint it, and use amber halo for the indicators and red and white for the other lights, the only thing i need to figure out is rear fog as rear fog lights are mandatory on all cars in the UK so I need to either re use the original fog bulb which can just stay where it is and have a halo around it, or just use an LED for it. I'm not sure of the legality of it as its a grey area as it would pass an MOT technically. But it's definitely going to be a fun project to do, thanks for the inspiration!

Out of curiosity do you think you might modify your new LEDs to use clear reverse lights? I’m curious how one would go about that if yes. Also the old housings are pretty reflective when not lit up, is there a good way to add reflective material (let’s say between the LED strips) for safety like when the car is parked?

I really like your process. I think a couple of improvements could be made in how this was done though: 1) When forming your lens, perhaps building a vacuum former would be ideal. I've seen some made that use melamine boards, pegboard, a shopvac and silicone to achieve. Then you could get a much closer fit. It could even be worthwhile to consider making a negative template from your original lens for your new lens material so that you get an exact duplicate rather than a slightly oversized one. 2) Instead of using foil tape to secure your light separators, maybe make some posts, secured with epoxy or CA glue for those channels to attach to (via a hole and nut, or some other fastener). This, I think, would be more secure to temperature changes, whereas foil tape, I don't know how well it does. It could be an ideal tape, I'm admittedly ignorant about this product. So this suggestion I assign with an asterisk. 3) The separators don't have as straight of a line as I would like to see personally, so perhaps some c-channel aluminum or even PVC pipe split down the middle? I think this could provide much more uniform and straight lines. Again, I love your process. Very creative and it shall be stored in my brain for potential future projects.

I used to use the same concept in the 90's to make clear taillights for cars using florescent diffusers. Everything old is new again. 👍

Looks great, you may want to try polycarbonate / lexan instead of acrylic from a functional standpoint. It's not as clear looking and gets slowly sun damaged, but it It has far better impact resistance and won't shatter. Most factory headlights use polycarbonate or actual glass, if a rock were to hit an acrylic lense hard enough it could crack and shatter into pieces, although it's more likely on a headlight and not a tail light. Polycarbonate can still crack and scratch but it's far stronger than acrylic and is more shatter resistant.

Thank you so much for this video, its been a pain finding a shop that would do a mould for my tail lights and making a mould myself with clay/acrylic has been a huge pain until I came across your video. I purchased the same stove thing and Im finishing building my box today. Hopefully I can get this project done this week!

@@IMEEMADE Hey so the heat box wasnt getting the acrylic hot enough for me, my next step would be to line the inside with that insulation and find any heat leaks BUT in regards to me not wanting to wait that much longer im using my oven. Issue is that the sheet either cools down too quickly or doesnt get soft enough. I didnt buy the sheet you used as my tail lights are way longer but Ill look again.

Been thinking of fabbing lenses just like you did. Will give it a try. I'm in UK, with annual road worthiness tests being compulsory. So of course having 2 set of lights is necessary, 1 stock & 1 modded. Then fitting stock lights for the testing station.

If your vehicle has cruise control, you may also need one load resistor for the brake lights in order for them to work correctly. I have found with trucks that if you do not use a load resistor cruise control does not work.

Nex Time use vacuum pump under the object when you put that acrylic sheet the vacuum suction will pull the acrylic sheet from all the sides at once and constantly but the bottom surface should have a lot of holes in it so the air goes through all the sides equally

thanks for this video i had tried something similar but couldn't think of how to make the lense in a way that would fit the housing this video helped a ton with that now i have the confidence to attempt this again with some of my spare housings. as a ntoe for others i would consider making your new lens first before attempting to separate it from the housing so that you dont have to remove it and refit this way you can get your new lens right first.
