Thank you, Louise! A very helpful video as usual. I learned from you not to worry about the colors separating and it does make the painting so much more interesting. Anyone who sees anything I’ve painted using my own black mix always comments about how beautiful it looks where it’s separated. I always tell them I learned it from Louise De Masi! Thank you!! A funny lab story: our veterinarian has a poster of a black lab with an x-ray showing a string of lit-up multicolored Christmas lights in it’s stomach, along with the caption: “Our Labradors will eat ANYTHING!” 😂 Have a very blessed 2024!

My first classes in watercolor put emphasis on mixing your own blacks and greys and avoid white paint but let the white of paper show through. I really love the texture of granulated paints like ultramarine and burnt sienna. Thank you Louise your fantastic.

Oh, how I needed this inspirational instruction. I’ve tried several times to paint a memorial portrait of a friend’s beautiful Great Pyrenees that was black. Failed each time. Think I’ll give her another try. Thank you so much Louise. You are a great teacher.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful information especially the mixing recipe for your black paint. I still panic 😱 when my colors separate but I am slowly learning that it will definitely work out okay if it does. This is a gorgeous painting of the black lab & thank for the additional tips on choosing the reference photo. Happy 2024 New Year Louise!
