Ever since I’d heard of people using painted jugs as decoys I’ve wanted to give it a shot and today is finally that day. I picked up some gallon jugs, black paint, lead sinkers, string and got to making my “Decoys”.
Once at the blind I placed them out instead of throwing them like I normally would and immediately lost a couple. I did not tie them correctly 😖. But we still had plenty enough to get the job done.
After getting skirted a few times early in the morning, there being very few birds flying, and missing a few shots my confidence began to dwindle. But finally I had 2 hen dogris work great, and 4 shots and one reload later they were in the water.
The rest of the day went by mostly watching dogris work or skirt my decoys with the occasional mottled duck passing by and me whiffing more shots.
Overall it wasn’t the hunt I wanted, but it was about as expected. I just hoped there would be more big ducks present.
So yes, you can shoot ducks over painted jugs. Do you need to buy the more expensive decoys? Probably not, at least for dogris. Would I recommend against having actual duck decoys? Absolutely not lol. You will likely finish more ducks hunting over actual decoys. Jugs could work for fillers to make your spread bigger though.
