Hi Lou. I am going to miss your fig video during the winter. I believe my success in growing figs in Bar Harbor Maine is directly related to following your suggestions. I have a fig that I would like to identify. I got a cutting from a friend in Boston who got it from an Italian man in Boston. Bill my friend unfortunately died before he had a chance to go back to the old Italian to ask what kind of fig it was. All Bill could tell me was the Italian man said it was the most cold hardy fig to grow in New England. This tree is a a strong fast grower. My best tree is in my unheated greenhouse it is by no means warm in this greenhouse house it drops down to the mid teens and it has even gone to 10 degrees once. I have to keep the tree pruned every other year because it reaches 9 feet to the top of the house. The figs are the smallest I have from the 8 varieties I have. The stem on this fig are longer than the other variety I grow. The figs are dark brown with reddish flesh. They have more of a sugar fig flavor kind of a brown sugar flavor. They also produce a small breba crop but most of the breba fall off. The Breba do not have an outstanding flavor but they are the first to ripen of my trees. The first two years the tree produce figs they all fell off. I was about ready to get rid of it but the third year it did great. It doesn’t like to have a heard pruning if I cut it back to 4 feet it won’t produce the next year. The leaves look like the improved Celeste in your video 3 loved and a few 1 loved leaves. Do you or anyone else reading this have an idea of what kind of fig it might be. I know this is a long shot but I included the best description I could. Thanks for your great educational videos. Kevin

Hey Lou, great to see how well your figs are doing this year.. My trees are loaded with fruit too and we got several hundred breba this year since June and our main crop yields were HUGE ! Still picking right now even though we've had a few chilly nights up here in zone 7 central NJ... What train lines am I hearing in this video sounds like some big freight train 😂 Good luck with everything and stay well, Tom

I started a fig tree years ago from a small piece of root from a friends tree. I have no idea what kind it is. This year I've been eating fig after fig and loving it. The above average winters aren't killing it to the ground for the last two yeas and they are massive. I'll be cutting them back late winter so I can reach the figs next year. I'm very excited because nothing around here eats the tree. The deer stay clear

Hi lou question, i have a poted fig full of figs, I reside in upstate NY our weather is already getting chili. I am thinking of bringing the tree in so the figs will have a chance to rippen. Your thoughts on doing so? Also what part of the country are you located in?

Would you please tell me how to identify breba vs main fruits…. What’s exactly is breba ? Thanks so much for sharing 💕

A breba is a fig that started the year before but did not have time to develop before the tree went dormant. It always develops on last year’s wood. Since the breba is in the bud in the spring when the tree wakes up it has a head start. A main crop fig develops on new growth and develops through the summer and ripens in the same year as the growth of the branch it is on.

Hello my friend Lou i have a question do you water your inground fig trees? I am hoping to plant a fig tree from a seedling i found and its already in a pot its 2 years old and i want to plant it and forget it so after how many years for a fig tree in the ground to become independent and live off rain water? Thank you by the way i live in a desert environment and it only rains in winter but the soil stays moist.

@ai-pq4yq Hi there! I live in an entirely different climate than you do. Given the nature of fig trees according to my experience, I would imagine that your fig trees will always be dependent on you for adequate watering throughout the year. Good luck! Lou Monti

@roccoconte2960 Hi Rocco! I had too many videos to release at that time. They tend to add up fast, and I only release one at a time. I lost track of that one. Take care! Lou Monti

Hello, I’m new to growing figs. I started the black Madeira KK in January. It’s got four figs on it if they get ripe when would they get ripe? Thank you

@cliftonmcandrew8984 Hi Clifton! I don't know. Even if I knew what some of the variables are, still, I wouldn't be able to give a perfectly accurate answer. So many things affect ripening. Here's a few examples. The tree's age, the climate zone, the state do you live in, and what part of the country? Is the tree potted or planted in the ground. Qhere is the tree located. If potted, is it next to any structure, and does it get full sun? The same question applies to in ground trees, as well. When a fig tree actually comes out of dormancy is important also. So is what kind of fertilizer regiment was maintained. All of these things can make a huge difference! I hope that they get ripe for you before the cooler weather sets in. I wouldn't be surprised! Thanks for watching. Lou Monti
