The positive side is you can share with us what varieties did the best. I hope though the die back is less then you think.

@imdanhoover An interesting woman, in deed! What is your take on what she was referring to? "The Human condition"? By the way, I particularly like her rendition on what constitutes a successful marriage!

What a coincidence, we have national winter observation (with counting) of garden birds this weekend. Your flock of feeder visitors was really interesting to see. Hope your figs survived this cold spell! It looks like you have colder winter this year than us up in the north here, in the zone 5.

It’s nice to give certain fig cuttings away to friends and family so when something like this happens they return the favor… Unfortunately they are all gone roots and all at those temps, been there …

Hi Lou! You can say that again!! This is the first real Winter we've had on the East Coast in the last 4 years!! Your dormant Fig trees look great and the remaining Perssimmons look so tasty...Wow! Praying that your young Fig cuttings garden makes it!! Also, the variety of birds feeding outside your window are so beautiful...nice view! Until next time, take care!!

Lou you ever try growing the trees as multi stem bushes? Super easy to bend, stake and cover with blankets. If you grow two trees close enough you can bend them towards each other and cover 2 with 1 blanket. Fingers crossed there's manageable damage!

I also don't mind sharing figs with nature, but to an extent. The last 2 years I've been pretty discouraged from even continuing the long time hobby of fig growing. I only have 35 trees or so, which is alot of work when you don't have the time, and I would estimate I lost over 80% of my harvests this year and the year before that maybe 50% lost. Hundreds and hundreds of figs stolen or destroyed by creatures and pests. I've tried everything to protect my trees and deter pests. Between the birds, squirells, coons, possums, chipmunks, wasps, yellowjackets, and then the awful swd's I am about to give up on all my trees. We put organza bags on hundreds, can't do them all way too many, and the creatures just either destroy the bag to get the fig out or they just chew on the bag for a bit to get some flavor and leave the chewed up bag on the ground with fig still left inside, then the ants and wasps and swd finish it off, the birds peck holes in the organza bags, then wasps and swd get in and destroy them, we put bird netting around all our prized trees and something came in and ripped it all apart and got everything that was ripe or just starting to ripen. And we put cinderblocks all around the base to hold the netting down, doesn't stop anything. The birds even still eat the ones close to the net around the canopy of the tree. Tried the ultrasonic noise emitters, the fake owls all over that make noise as well, nothing deters anything

Hi Lou! Looks great at your house… I have so much snow… fingers crossed emoji… Keep warm! I caught and relocated 34 squirrels in a small backyard garden… 34 squirrels 3 cardinals I wren And the neighbor’s striped cat All without baiting live trap. Keeping my fig crop protected. 😂❤🎉 Thank you!

Good Morning, I enjoy your fig videos, as I have learned a lot from your tutorials. I too am worried about my fig trees. I live in south Louisiana about 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. We had a once in a lifetime event, as we had 9 inches of snow and very cold temps. Our temps went down to 11 degrees one night and 17 the next. At 69 years old, this is the first time I have experienced this. I still have not been able to evaluate my trees. Hopefully most of them survive. I have roughly 25 different varieties planted at this time. Only time will tell.

What's the age of this tree? It looks like it has reached its peak size. I like the way you've grown this tree. The fruits seem to be high enough to be out of the reach of deer.

Insects breath through holes along their body called spiracles. Spraying liquid soap on on these critters plugs this breathing holes and suffocates these insects. Also soapy water provides phosphorus (phosphates) to plants. In the old days, my mother used to always water her plants with laundry water just for that reason.
