Discover Lourmarin
Located in the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, Lourmarin is one of the most beautiful villages in France. Lourmarin has 1131 inhabitants, and is located about 35 km from Aix en Provence, and 58 km from Avignon.
Renowned for its listed castle, but also for the famous people who lived there and are buried there, such as Raoul Dautry, Albert Camus or Henri Bosco, Lourmarin is a very attractive tourist village.
Lourmarin is also a village resolutely turned towards digital: Inaugurated in May 2015, within the former Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative of the Village, the "Fruitière Numérique" is a third place dedicated to new digital uses, open to all: individuals , companies, schools, artists, students…
To discover Lourmarin, the best is still to get lost... Visit its narrow streets, admire the facades marked by time, and let yourself be guided by the murmur of the fountains.
His history :
Village mainly composed of Vaudois then Protestants, it will be partially burned and destroyed during the Vaudois massacre in 1545. But it will be gradually rebuilt to have its current profile.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, new manufacturing, craft and above all agricultural industries appeared: wheat, rye, olives, vines, blackberries, silkworms which generated factories for the weaving of silk, but also wool and linen. Moreover, it was Philippe de Girard, a native of Lourmarin, who invented the linen weaving loom...
In the 19th century, prosperity set in but, with it, insecurity. 1921 is an important date in the history of the village: Robert Laurent Vibert, Lyonnais, scholar, man of letters and history, great lover of art but also at the head of a large fortune, acquires and restores the fallen castle in ruins. After his death, the castle was bequeathed to the Academy of Sciences, Agriculture, Art and Belles Lettres of Aix-en-Provence, on the condition of creating a Foundation for the reception of young artists, a "Villa Médicis" in Luberon in short.
In addition to its beauty, this village is characterized by the life that animates it all year round: galleries, festivals and concerts, the large Friday morning market... Henri Bosco said of Lourmarin that it was a "place conducive to 'friendship?', Albert Camus spoke of a 'homeland' of 'overwhelming beauty'. Both had taken up residence there, definitively conquered.
Cafés, restaurants and fine shops mark out your stroll through the narrow streets that lead you from squares to fountains.
