Personally I think this is a song about a lesbian falling in love with a girl for the first time after having a relationship with a guy and then realizing that what she felt for him wasn't love. She describes her past love as an ache she could live with and something that she could live without, meanwhile what she is now feeling is far more intense, "like a kick in the chest from the inside" "a weight I can't get away from." Then she asks the question "did I ever really love you?" recognizing the feelings that she currently holds for her crush are different than the ones she had for her ex.

I am the guy in that story lmao. My first ever girlfriend was a lesbian and I honestly wonder if that is how she felt when she first took a girl on a date honestly. Still good friends with her so I might ask her one of these days if I recall as my memory, isn't the best. She did not love me, but I treated her with kindness plus we got along well despite us being very different people, and she mistook the appreciation to loving to such a degree when I rejected her the first time, she waited a month and asked again. Sometimes I kind of chuckle and wonder if I look like a woman to be perused so heavily but the human brain is a fickle thing ey?

I think along the same lines but moreso just that they had a relationship that they thought was good and how it should be it ended for whatever reason then they found another person got into it with them and started to see how it should have been from the start but I'm also coming out of a toxic friendship and realizing I was putting up with or allowing so much more then I needed to because I didn't know any better

Honestly i love their story, but it feels more scattered than anything with the way it’s listed in the playlist. I rearranged the order a little and it helped me understand this story better personally. I’ll write it out in case anyone else wants to try understanding the story better Paper and ink Anything, anything, anything Staring at the sun I lose to you My love is sick Wine and wheat You stabbed me in my sleep DogBird Everything changes in time ST. Valentines I wanna be in love again Love after you Hopes this helps someone like it helped me ^^ Edit: sooooo I figured I’d explain why I feel this order makes sense to me, because why not. First we have paper and ink, their first meeting. Bird meets this timid and shy girl named dog. Bird desperately wants to be with her, but they’re so afraid that revealing their feelings will make things worse, because dog is so perfect, how can she even compare to them. But eventually they work up the courage and asks her out, they go on a coffee date, and that leads us into… Anything, anything, anything, a song so sweet it was probably written with honey. Everything is wonderful, they get along great, they love each other, laugh a lot, it’s just great. And bird is willing to do anything for dog..almost to an unhealthy degree. They’re willing to do things they wouldn’t normally do, and stop enjoying things they normally would. (I hate wine, mornings, time, and I’d stop staying home, I love rain but I’d ruin every coat I own, I’d lose every penny I find ext), which leads us into.. Staring at the sun, where we finally get to hear dogs side of the story for a second. Bird is just so infatuated with her, and they are willing to do and put up with anything to be with her, and they hope that dog won’t realize she’s way out of their league. But dog..she doesn’t see herself like that at all, she sees herself as a curse, she makes flowers wilt, she’s just a dandelion, something pretty but also a weed. She fears bird, not because they’re hurtful or anything, but because one mistake and she could lose them forever. She isn’t used to this gentle and kind love, and we’ll see why soon. But she’s keeping this hidden for now…and now onto.. I lose to you, bird really lets us know how much they’re willing to put up with if it means keeping dog. Even if dog isn’t nasty or cruel, if she was she couldn’t care, or..she thinks she wouldn’t. They don’t care what they have to do or go through to keep dogs love, they’ll burn if it means dog sticks around. Which perfectly leads to… My love is sick, the culmination of birds twisted sense of love, the small habits dog is starting to exhibit are really getting to her, but it’s fine. They’d rather the wound, than have it removed. Because even if she hurts them, she still loves them with everything they have, and dog feels the same way…right? Which leads to.. Wine and wheat, dog gets the spotlight now, and all of her trauma is on full display. She was raised by a religious family, it was ingrained into her head that loving the same gender is wrong, and that you’ll burn in hell, that gods love is all you need, conditional love. And that’s why dog can’t understand birds gentle nature…which leads into You killed me in my sleep, a dark and twisted song which truly illustrates dogs fears and anxiety. Bird lovingly cuddles her, but to dog..it was a knife straight into her sternum. And all she can do is cry, she doesn’t know why she’s like this..nothing is even wrong, so why can’t she just let herself be loved? Why can she only love when she’s being hurt in the process… which leads into… DogBird, the moment it all went wrong, dog after so long of keeping these feelings hidden, snaps like a rabid dog. And..bird realizes after so long of being hurt and distant from dog, they can’t do this anymore. And even after everything, dog pleads for bird to stay, but they don’t ..a dog with no master, lost and confused on what to do. Which leads to… Everything changes in time, where bird has moved out, and even though they know this is best for them..they still miss dog. They don’t want this to be the end for them, and …well they don’t move back in together, but they decide to write each other, distant but still talking. But then this leads into… St. Valentines, where bird is happily writing dog as much as they can, even deciding to mail dog special cards and poems, until… dog says she never loved them, or she thinks. She still doesn’t understand her emotions..but this breaks birds heart, and when dog realizes she did love bird, when she calls them to apologize, she finds out bird has moved on, and that’s where birds story ends..which leads into I wanna be in love again, the semi finale. It’s been a while since dog last talked to bird, she’s back with her Christian family now, and all she wants..is to be in love again, or..for someone to love her the way bird did, she doesn’t miss bird themself, but the way it felt when they loved her, which leads finally to.. Love after you, a song all about regret and reflection. She has a boyfriend now, probably someone from her family’s church. Another dog, just like her, perfect right? But..it’s not. He’s not even a bad boyfriend, it’s puppy love all over again, but..she just can’t accept unconditional love, she can’t love without hurt being involved. So she holds a plushie of a grey bird, and cries. Because she’s just reminded of the love she couldn’t accept, the perfect person for her gone forever, and you know what..she doesn’t even know if there was even love there, and if this Is love..please take it back. But she still keeps her poems..even if they laugh at her, and well..she’ll just have to settle. After every date with her boyfriend while she laughs, she’ll go to bed and cry all night. Phew! Hopefully that clears up why I prefer the order I have listed, thank you to anyone who listened ^^

Actually, quite the opposite. " love AFTER you" "You" being "Bird". So that other person is someone she tried to date but she's still pinning for Bird hence why Dog is holding the plushie close. She feels guilt for trying to let someone else in where there's no space for them to begin with because it's all Bird.
