I was born and raised in Hawaii in the 80s and 90s, but moved away and haven't been back in over 15 years. When I first stumbled across this song on youtube, I had no idea what it was but it shook something deep in my memories. It is an intense melancholy, an artifact from some previous forgotten life. This song is a portal to my vanished childhood. I listen to it whenever I'm feeling a little down. ❤

Tabitha Len Wai Thanks. Saw Hawaiian Style Band in Honolulu. Twice, including once in Ala Moana before they hit it big. Also saw Sister Robi on her own once afterwards before we left. Bought the album. Don't have the CD with me right now. Shared out this text and video to five thousand people in three online groups yesterday. Since Hawaii came up on those. I took one relationship to Hawaii in the nineties and brought it back to the States a few years later. This song was really meaningful for the relationship and one of two theme songs for our stay in Honolulu. The other was of course Hawai'i 78, which was playing all the time on the car radio when we arrived. We also saw Hapa. As a couple we had such great hopes of connecting with the locals and making it our home long term. But Hawaii is no good for blondes, a least those who can't speak the local slang, as one local blonde could. Great academic work at UH Manoa did not get my girl into grad school there. Also my job went away and it was hard to get any kind of technical work. Hawaii was a complete bust for us since we had no turf, no ohana there. So, no more Hawaiian Style band, no more Honolulu for us, and now no more relationship. The relationship officially ended, and my longtime partner got another place to live in town a few months back. But I will always remember the beautiful rainbows in Manoa, and even some double rainbows there. Several wonderful things did happen in Honolulu. For example, I connected up the Speaker of the House to the official Dalai Lama people, and this concretely led to the Dalai Lama speaking to the Hawaii State Legislature. Also I did the major article reaching 10,000 people in a front page headline. Further, I had an actual encounter with one of the Old Gods of the Big Island at a performance of the Pele cycle. And I got my Lakota Pipe consecrates by a Lakota Pipe Carrier on the North Shore of Oahu in about 1994. And I swam with the sea turtles. But those were just great moments, not an actual functioning life. There was no future for us at all in Hawaii, and basically no decent bookstores for the first two years. I really had Island Fever and walked around outside a lot alone. Just remembered that. It felt like a total dead end every day. I have seen lots of hula kahiko over the years since leaving Honolulu, at an annual folk festival. The Hawaiian dancers either live near the festival venue or they fly in from Hawaii. So that connection remains. Never went to Merrie Monarch. And it is really sad to hear about Chinky Mahoe's conviction for sexual abuse, and people not taking that seriously at Merrie Monarch. But it's not too surprising. A bad guy who is cultural royalty is still royalty in the islands and so he gets the respect he should not. No doubt my major mistake while living in Hawaii was not going to Kauai when I could. And not seeing the ocean dolphins. I love dolphins. But Hawaii turns out to have been a very major cultural chapter in my life, tho a rather brief stay. We packed a whole ocean transport moving box ourselves and unpacked it on the West Coast. Just the two of us, with only a small amount of additional help from a rather tiny white girl. Getting out of Hawaii was anything but easy. What saved us was keeping all the cardboard boxes and other packing materials from the move to Hawaii, and the offer of space for the container / trailer at a Catholic parking lot. And we were glad to leave and deeply relieved to arrive back to the States. It's very green over here too. Don't expect to ever visit the islands. That chapter was closed for good. My regards to the Honolulu Zoo, to the Bishop Museum, to Ala Moana, to the sea turtles and to the wonderful Kagyu Tibetan Buddhist Center. "The Life of the Land is preserved in Righteousness." & "Above All The Nations Stand Humanity". ( Engraved at the stone entrance to UH Manoa. ) I actually live that more than American I've ever met. I am a true world citizen. But that's not how it felt in Hawaii. We only had one personal friend there and we hosted her here once, but since then haven't been in touch with anyone in the Islands for quite a few years. And that was that. All that's left is the music. Anyway, Mahalo and Hang Loose.

It makes me so happy to listen to this and always will. I was in a very tumultuous relationship and just a beginner parent at the time I was living there and listening to this every day, but this song really helped me to make the best of it, to not give up, and to treasure every day I had living there in that beautiful culture. I especially love the transition into the Hawaiian segment in this song. I must really feel those lyrics, because I have them memorized all these years later, even though I've largely lost touch with Hawaiian language.

I found this song about 3 years ago after meeting my girlfriend who was living in Hawaii at the time. I have since immersed myself in everything Hawaiian. The culture, music and Hula. IZ, Danny Couch, Na Leo Pilimehana and others. Love this sound even if the artist and songs are from years ago. Makes me wonder what I have missed all these years. I am now moving my girlfriend and I to Hawaii next April. Aloha!! Malaho for the post.
