I hope maybe you have some priceless video footage for your family to help you remember him by. I'm afraid for us we didn't have the technology of today back in 79 so we only have photos...how I'd love to hear his voice just one more time. Bit that always makes it real for me is: When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin', "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya", At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya". It humanises the victims in a way that just talking about the number of deaths doesn't. It's probably not what they actually said in the real tragedy, but it's a great lyric. The captain going down with his ship and his men, just accepting their fate with one last show of gratitude.

Gordon brings this Tragedy and Sadness and the Savagery of Lake Superior(Gitchie Goomy) to life in an almost Religious way in this anthem and Highlight's solemnly the lives lost of these sailors and how important and truly loved they were by their families and friends and the listeners to this poignant tale.

+Ash Hudson Pretty sure it was written about drug addiction (heroin) which could certainly be transposed into Johnie's life as he struggled with addiction his whole career. Either way, it's probably one of the only other covers on the list apart from Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah that the artist pours actual emotion into the song and makes it their own. And probably the only real 'tear' jerker on the list

Tears in Heaven is definitely a tearjerker for sure. I imagine my late sister who died over 41 years ago at only 2 months old from SIDS 09/27/1981-12/0?/1981. The saddest part is I never met her because I was the last born. Only my oldest sister, b. 1980, was able to see her. There's only 4 of us now I try to imagine how she would look today, who would she be closest with out of all of us. I ask my mother questions about her physical appearance so I could draw her. "Would you know my name" is so true, because I wonder if she would know me. Gosh, I know I will meet her one day as her baby sister. RIP Jotonel Sharee Shaw 🕊️🕊️🕊️

I remember exactly where I was when Eric Clapton's son died. In fact, I was about 6 blocks away and never knew what was happening so close to where I was. Thinking about it still puts a huge pit in my stomach. Being a father myself, I still think about how terrifying that child's final moments must have been. Sure, it is a beautiful song, but I am certain that Clapton would not only give up that song, but his entire career, to have this tragedy never have happened.

@@DaryMatera Yes... As a father, it sent me into a rage of emotions. I was hurt, angry, I cried I even hyperventilated. I was overcome with grief for a child that was not mine. Because, as a parent, I knew the pain of this mother and father. It was just difficult for me to imagine. At the time, I was a young father. My kid was recently born and I was working hard in NY to support my kid. I could not imagine a horrific death like this for an adult, much less a child. It's funny, today, I hear about something like this, and I just go make coffee. Time has a way of hardening us to the tragedies that not only come, but are yet to come. I guess instances like this have made me hard. I still feel horrible, but I feel horrible much differently.

@@danminutsich7509 Life can become very difficult to bear. At times we need to armour ourselves so we can cope with the tragedies we’re experiencing. The pain is still there, yet we’re protected from feeling the depth of that pain, sometimes to even preserve our sanity.

@@maryloulauren8108 Sure, but I would ask you....What protects us from the depth of pain? And, how does our sanity become preserved? And, as far as armoring ourselves from tragedies. I don't believe that is the right approach. I would say that taking this position can be double-edged. You see, I believe that sometimes, and certainly not at first, but pain can eventually become one of the highest expressions of love. An emotional sacrifice that grows with time. I believe that pain becomes a badge of honor that we not only learn to live with, but embrace. I also don't believe that pain is an enemy. The thing is, pain is something that we have been conditioned to fear, so we never embrace or accept it immediately. And, although unwelcome at first, I believe that pain eventually becomes a stranger that walks alongside us for the remainder of our days. Pain becomes a partner who we get used feeling, and maybe even come to rely on some day. However, mostly, I believe that accepting pain is the only way to truly let go. That's my 2-cents.

John Denver made two songs that have caused me to soak many hankies with my tears. Back Home Again. It was playing in my head when I was bottomed out and came a 1/4 inch of blowing my brains out. Fortunately I didn't . On a happier note, Take Me Home Country Roads. Every time I hear it I just totally lose it. Reminds me of my old home town in rural Pennsylvania. I imagine me and my best friend walking down the unpaved road, when we have crossed over ro to the Afterlife. Barefoot, holding hands, chewing on a piece of grass, singing along, telling him, well Larry, we have arrived.

We played this Song at my Eldest Sons Funeral for his Dad who committed suicide on 28th November 2011 - he was a massive Queen Fan, breaks my Heart listening to it & under the circumstances of Freddie Mercury writing this Track it defo does deserve a mention!

Tears in heaven wins for me too. I lost my dad just a weeks ago and our oldest cat last week. So currently in that very emotional spot again but only that song actually made me cry. Hallelujah is a song by anyone that always brings tears to my eyes and I refused to let it be played at my mom's funeral because I was already so emotional over it.

That was my stepdads song Bill. My mom & I loved him. Others that didn't like him never understood him. We did. I still miss him. Bill helped raise me showed me to never give up. The song that stuck with me after he died was from Phil Collins: It gets easier across those tracks. I swear I could feel and hear my stepdads voice through the birds after he passed. In Loving memory of William Leeroy Yates.

Damn! I forgot about that video. Epic sadness there. I remember when it came out when I was a teen. That one hits a nerve hard at that age when you're feeling all kinds of emotions of resentment, anger, sadness etc. The video just hammers it home. Much like Everybody Hurts. The song is sad, then you watch the video and it really hits home.

Most of these songs are already in my "Sad Songs" playlist. Yeah, I have a Sad Songs playlist, I think listening to sad songs can be therapeutic and relaxing. However, my personal pick for saddest song would definitely be Samson by Regina Spektor. Not only is the song beautiful on its own but the song's topic of losing a loved one to cancer is such a universal theme.
