Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, and later Jane’s Addiction, were openly and staunchly against ideology and virtue signaling, yet they were anything but nihilistic. They combined the rejection of conformity with the observation that life is more meaningful than we were likely being told. This is what made their music irresistible to anyone with a brain and the gumption and audacity to use it.

This was the first L&R song I heard after Bauhaus broke up. They still had the magic without Peter Murphy. A different lighter magic but magic still the same. I did NOT want to give them a chance but they changed my mind. Never doubt the power of Daniel Ash and David J again!
@BaronKimball Жыл бұрын
I think in retrospect Peter Murphy was holding Ash J and Mann back
@drk3216 ай бұрын
Peter leaving Bauhaus basically ended his commercial career. L&R had not only a successful commercial career but also curated a library of solid, artistic songs that eclipsed anything Bauhaus recorded. What a mistake, the least talented thinking going solo would work out. Probably working in a fish and chip shop nowadays.
@antknee55566 ай бұрын
@@drk321 where have you been the last 20+ years? Murphy had a decent solo album and there is no fucking way that L&R did ANYTHING that would be considered better than Bauhaus. I liked L&R but nobody can compare to Bauhaus. Not even Bauhaus minus Murphy. Like with any really good band it took all 4 of them to make the Bauhaus magic. Can you imagine the Beatles without Lennon? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion no matter how misguided it may be. 😶🌫️
@antknee55566 ай бұрын
@@drk321 there is no fucking way that LR eclipsed ANYTHING Bauhaus did. Although LR were good they were minus the magic that Murphy brought that he couldn't recreate without Ash and Jay. And Murphy knew where owed his fame and Rock and Roll lifestyle where he never had to get a real job. He got back together with Bauhaus for several successful tours of which I saw a few shows. Saw them in 2006 and even though Ash was getting old pudgy Murphy looked better and still Brought it. Hardly working in a fish and chips joint I'd say.
@drk3216 ай бұрын
@@antknee5556 This is an opinion issue. No need to get defensive and I personally usually do not use public opinion or record sales to tell me what is artistic. But it is MY opinion that when Peter left Bauhaus, you didn't hear much from Peter again. MEANWHILE L&R put out epic ambient/goth/ethereal music for years. Sorry to offend you. Maybe you can get a therapist to cope with your injury? Jeez buddy. You like your guys I'll like mine. Dial it back. Some MF's like Coldplay. Mourn those fools and let's just realize we are of almost the same DNA. WE LIKE GOOD SHIT. Fist bump and let's move on. Just like Love and Rockets would say: Yin and Yang. I find something really special in the Love and Rockets music. For the lack of a better word, I gues I should call it "the vibe", which in my opinion makes their better songs (and not all of their ledger is impeccable to say politely) absolutely unique and and simultaneously timeless. I mean this tune, or No Big Deal, or Haunted when the minutes drag... the list goes on - in my opinion it's like what quintessensial rock music has since become, the very core of its last evolution can be found on those 80s recordings. it's just a feeling of mine though.
