Goth and goth adjacent people and some other alternative subcultures are immune to changing body fashions it seems, from Lord Byron having possibly the earliest documented eating disorder in a male to the modern indie rockers and goths refusing to jump on the big bum trend and pro-ultra processed food industry propaganda that demonises any attempt to eat less and therefore buy less, and pathologises having any standards about what is food and what is merely a harmful calorific substance akin to alcohol being mismarketed as food. We all seem to be born wanting to look like Jack Skellington and The Corpse Bride characters, maybe unconsiously to signify a rejection of the irresponsible environmental destruction via overconsumption and over-farming of mainstream society. Or just to look more like the dead cos the dead are mysterious and cool.

The summer of 1989 was kind of epic for me musically- not only did Love and Rockets get a Top 3 smash hit on the American charts but there was The Cure's "Disintegration" album, and Depeche Mode’s "101" live album and film as well - my top 3 favorite bands of all time. I saw Love and Rockets in concert that summer with front row seats (with The Pixies as the opener!) and even met Kevin Haskins earlier that day, before he did an interview for MusiquePlus (Quebec's version of MTV) and was bowled over by what a complete sweetheart he was. When Peter Murphy came though town on his solo tour later that year (with Nine Inch Nails as the opener!) , I also met Peter and he was as kind as you could imagine someone being. A year later I was graduating from high school and skipped prom because I had sold-out-in-15-minutes third row seats for Depeche Mode on the World Violation tour (with Nitzer Ebb as the opener!) and ended up meeting Martin Gore, Alan Wilder and Andy Fletcher after the show outside of their hotel. They were about to go clubbing and Martin invited me along. I ended up dancing with Martin and Alan and even played a round of pool with Fletch! It was such a magical time in my life, full of promise and possibility.

@SparkJoy I spent about two hours talking to Kevin Haskins backstage after a Peter Murphy show in 2000. He played drums for PM on that tour. I had the same experience, he was super cool and what started as a music conversation just kept going until I had to leave - at the time, I was helping run the video feeds at House of Blues in Las Vegas. Funny thing...I discovered Bauhaus in Spring of 1983 when I was in 10th grade. Then I went to London on a school trip and it happened to be the week they played their final show, but I had no clue about it. I found out years later that I was there but missed it. He thought that was funny!

I certainly chose wrong in the divorce. It was years before I recognized where the magic of Bauhaus had come from. Peter's voice is, of course, legendary, and he's a skilled songwriter. But Daniel Ash and David Jay had the magic touch. I can't think of any Peter Murphy songs that still sound as perfect and timeless as songs like this, No New Tale To Tell, Haunted as the Minutes Drag. I was addicted to this song back in senior high. I played it over and over again. Even now when I hear it I can see why it spent such a long time on the Billboard Top 40. Something very erotic and haunting about the rhythm and the beat.

So excited I get to see Daniel Ash and these guys perform live in London in August 2022!! (as Bauhaus with Peter Murphy). Bauhaus still out there musically kicking ass and owning the stage. 💜. Love and Rockets forever, Bauhaus forever. X

This song came on earlier today as I was shopping at the Thrift Store. It brought back many great memories of the 80's, I had to look it up on KZbin and put it on my playlists! It's a great song. With great lyrics and great memories of the 80's.

Just listened to this at 3:36 pm Jan 1 2025. I was swinging on my mom’s leg in the kitchen while she cleaned and danced to this. One of my first memories. I would play a bowling pin like a guitar when they listened to music on the stereo. Some of the best times of my life happened before I turned 8.

If by kids, you mean Gen-Xers, then I can answer: Yes- all the time. It's a good thing Numbers here in Houston keeps it real with underground 80s most Fridays. This song did get mainstream airplay back in the day, but radio was better then, as were most things.

I always liked the shot at around 3:40 It adds to the song that Ash looks just slightly... desperate.
