My DM for a weekly game at a game café has us describe what our characters have done over the week since the previous session and then roll to see how successful we were. This allows for our characters to fulfill some of our individual goals (search for information, gain temporary buffs, develop character arcs), leaving the bulk of the session for us to complete the battle/scenario of the week. Last week, I had my kobold grave cleric officiate a wedding (mechanically using Ceremony) between two random NPC adventurers. The DM only said that the NPCs were a dwarf and a goliath and that they spent their honeymoon just going on an all-out bloodlusty battle rager. I chose to prepare/perform the ceremony as my week-long activity initially just to get more gold (as my character was broke at the start of the session), but then I realized that I could theoretically use that as a social tool by asking if other NPCs were present at said wedding and maybe gain some extra help in figuring out our “enslaved by and used as adventuring gladiators for a megalomaniacal efreeta” situation. Plus it was just kinda nice to have that moment of my character doing some good by helping cement the love between these random characters, especially right after a kind of upsetting/disappointing thing that one of the other PCs did happened.

In my first long-term campaign my character Leliana accidentally fell for a fellow PC. One of the other player characters died and his new character was supposed to be introduced in this next session. The party was in a bar drinking to our fallen friend when the DM began describing a stunning blonde aasimar woman and my character was instantly smitten. She walked up to flirt with what I assumed was an NPC and when the other player replied instead of the DM it was a pretty hilarious moment. So our characters started their relationship on a pretty flirtatious and cute note. We spent months in a sorta will they won’t they plot playing out on the side between the two of us and eventually it developed into a really beautiful slow burn romance that eventually resulted in his character Sasha proposing to Leliana. It made Sasha sacrificing her celestial powers to save Leliana’s life which ultimately led to her death so much more emotional. I legit cried a couple of times over their relationship beats. Long story short, romance can be a really powerful tool if everyone is on board.

It's hard to explain. I know the pre-written adventures have lore, but a big part of the setting comes from the Dungeon Master themselves. Is there a list of celestial beings that can be referenced when making an aasimar character? Or is it all kind of made up by the DM?

One of my favorite experiences GMing was a session with local heroes that took on adventuring for bounties as a way to get by in rough times and they started getting ideas about buying an inn and having the easy life. The party leader was married at the beginning of the game and his brother was a literal carnival clown and there was this great tension between and NPC that loves and struggles to support a husband who's taking these risks and just hating one of the other party members who's a horrid influence on him. After the second adventure ward came home from a long journey and found he had a baby girl and his hole attitude changed and he really didn't want to keep adventuring and kept looking for ways not to. The second there was a death in the party Ward just walked away from the adventure in the middle and went home and built a little bar and it was the best end to a campaign ever because all of the players connected with that abrupt stop emotionally.

Killing PC's loved ones is a very one-note thing that I personally do not find very interesting; unless it fits into the overall storyline and is not used as a gimmick for the sake of having that gimmick. Threatening the significant NPC of the PC indirectly, like placing the village or city that or those NPC's are in the path of some invading hostile force, can lead to some interesting story moments. Getting the PC to make the choice of killing that NPC that is their own loved one, now that is very interesting.

Like any relationship, communication is paramount and from there keep it safe, sane, and consensual. Away from the table RP, especially text based, is often helpful allowing things to develop between characters and keeping the DM in the loop without making other players uncomfortable. He didn't get past the door won beastmaster handshake later they go hang out. Over the course of the adventure his party ends up having to describe to him why it would be unethical for him to slip her a potion of love. He learns. And then flash Forward again he eventually hands her a legendary harp as a wedding gift and proposal . at most all we ever role played was them drinking together and the end result of them wandering through the street playing music together silly things like that. But added to both of the characters. also they both died in the same battle and their souls were returned so the player and the character kind of took it in a spiritual way.

I actually had a player (i was dm) who acted like a wounded puppy at my feet. He kept flirting with NPCs but it was unhealthily obsessive. Eventually his character starts dating an essential NPC so they (and more specifically, I) could not escape. It got creepier and creepier and I was uncomfortable, told him to tone it down, he didnt, and luckily story reasons allowed for me to have the NPC break up with him. He was genuinely upset, lashed out at others, and almost suicidal. At the end of the day, there was more stuff outside of game and he was a narcissistic abuser and we ended up kicking him. Im glad you guys talked about setting boundaries out of game because they really REALLY are important. My and my friends game online and over the course of a year (this creep included) we've had two narcissists, and one person who rules lawyered so agressively he would scream and shout and when i told him he was kicked after strike three, he essentially held us hostage for 4 or 5 hours saying he was going to kill himself.. And something people dont talk about often is how to handle abusive or manipulative players and get them out or talk them down. Its uncomfortable, yes, but most of the players i know are already insecure and can allow the abuse to continue for longer than it should. I guess I really just dont want others to go through this same thing, but there are no videos on how to handle it.

Recently, I played a campaign of Curse of Strahd where the purpose was not for us to kill Strahd, but for our Bard to marry him and bring him to the side of good. Their wedding is happening next session!

My character Kallista, a fighter barbarian, and another character, Amnon, an archfey warlock, were shipped so fiercely by our fellow players that is became a running gag. Kallista was a ball of snark that had little use for the somewhat flowery ways of Amnon (she was raised in a gladiatorial pit after all) so when she jokingly called him "Jashin", a term for a handsome man, as a joke following yet another woman flirting with him, it became the goal of the other players that Amnon and Kallista would end up together. Eventually, Kallista did start to develop genuine feelings for Amnon, finally admitting to having them in the second to last session of the campaign as of now, and leaving Amnon at a complete loss of how to approach this potential relationship. He's such a precious boy that doesn't quite know how to deal with Kallista. Which is so much fun.

I DM Adventurers League in Manhattan, NY and have a very diverse group of players. I appreciate your attention to this subject, even though it honestly only comes up rarely, except with table banter (Floon anyone?). This is one I will listen to twice.

Hey guys, thanks for doing this. I think sex in rpg is becoming more common, but most youtubers seem scared to say anything about it. I'm happy you included things like the x card and lines and veils

Thank you! Romance is definitely one of those things that there are better and worse ways to do, so we wanted to talk about it!

First of all, bravo for going the distance on the costumes. One of my most fulfilling arcs as a DM was when I played my Weird War One game with my then real life girlfriend. Her character had a fiancee (thanks to a semi arranged marriage, they were aristocrats). It was complicated- he was smitten, but she was secretly a lesbian. They were also genuine friends, even if it was purely platonic on her part. Yes, he needed to be rescued a couple of times. But he was an asset to the party and roleplaying out the stuttering awkwardness between them was hilariously fun. By the end of the campaign, they arrived at an understanding and went their separate ways and it was bittersweet. In my current 5e campaign, my wood elf character was just proposed to by a wood elf NPC. The DM has setup that, in this world, lovers challenge for each other's hand at the annual clan gathering and I expect shenanigans. I'm really looking forward to exploring this new aspect of roleplaying.

I find as a player I am often of two minds. On the one hand, I know from experience that having relationships in game (not just romantic ones, but those too) adds a tremendous amount of depth and satisfaction to the game in the long run. (That's true even if they are threatened in some way. Saving your sister from bandits is always more engaging than saving "the quest-giver's daughter.) On the other hand, on an emotional level, there is that part of me that wants to avoid relationships because of the tension that those situations can create. That, despite knowing that the tension is ultimately rewarding. That reward easy beat can't quash the risk aversion I feel, because you can't dismiss the feat of loss with a cost-benefit analysis. As a result, I have the urge to be risk averse despite knowing that it could make the game less fun.

Have you guys thought of doing a video on the Blood Hunter class on D&D Beyond? It’s technically homebrew, but from my understanding several WOTC people helped with the revisions to it.

Lol I feel that. My husband and I play in the same game and my lawful neutral bounty hunter rogue butts heads with his borderline senile chaotic wizard all the time and we love it.

This whole discussion around 12:08 is SO smart. I can't stand it when DMs just see the loved ones in a PC's life as something they can take away, but I'd never made the connection before about that DM style encouraging people to make more orphan murderhobos. It's got me thinking about my players and that I should make sure to tell them that, yeah, D&D is a dangerous world and there are conflicts and dramatic things will happen, but I'm not out to punish you for forming bonds, that's not my idea of a good time.

Playing through tomb of anialation was orginally gonna make my swashbuckler a huge womanizer but changes my mind when I couldn't come up with a back story that inspired me so I changed him to having found a wife that caused him to leave his life of crime and debauchery and I definitely think it was a change for the better as it helped give him more agency in the story
